New Growth & Change

My name is Jessica Torres and I serve as the ESC Region 12 Social Studies content specialist. The purpose of the newsletter is to provide resources that are specific to types of social studies content, as well as general instructional tools and resources, and updates and professional development opportunities that are beneficial to all.

I wanted to let you all know that I will soon have a title change. I have accepted the position as our service center's School Improvement Lead; however, the social studies world is something that is near and dear to my heart, so I will continue on as the Social Studies content specialist for the region as well. I may make some shifts in the way that professional development for social studies is offered, but any such changes would occur in the fall. I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with a multitude of districts as they strive to improve themselves to better serve students. As always, if you ever need assistance or have a question, please do not hesitate to contact me via email (jtorres@esc12.net) or social media (@owl_b_torresedu).

Spring 2021 Assessment Updates

  • State assessments will not be used for state or federal accountability purposes for the 2020-2021 school year.
  • TEA is not lawfully authorized to waive certain related graduation requirements. When students reach their senior year, in order to graduate they must have either passed STAAR EOC assessments, scored high enough on a substitute assessment (e.g., SAT/ACT), or met the requirements of an individual graduation committee.

Revisiting history vs. removing it: Boston historians weigh in on controversial statues

As calls for racial justice ramped up last year, statues of controversial historical figures were taken down.
