AMS Principal's Weekly Update

Dear AMS Students and Families,
It has been an energizing first week of school for what promises to be another wonderful school year. After a summer of construction in and around the building, the halls have once again come alive with energy and enthusiasm. It has been great to see familiar faces returning and new students and staff becoming part of the Anderson school community.
The first week is always a time of adjustment, especially for our new 6th Graders. Students are learning to navigate their schedule, the routines of lunch, getting to know their teachers and classmates, and settling into the expectations set forth at Anderson. While there are always a few bumps along the way, our students have done a tremendous job getting settled in this week. To ensure that our students are aware of our building rules and expectations this year, I did a schoolwide Zoom for 7th and 8th Graders in Advisory (6th Graders received this information at Orientation) to review our current building rules and expectations. If you would also like to review our current building rules and expectations, please click here.
One of the most rewarding parts of the first week has been seeing students reconnect with friends and teachers. The conversations in the hallways, smiles in classrooms, and excitement throughout the building are reminders of how school creates human connections. To that point, our teachers and staff work incredibly hard to develop relationships with students while creating a welcoming environment where students feel respected, supported, and ready to learn.
The first week has also been a great reminder that success in middle school is about much more than academics. We want our students to challenge themselves, build positive relationships, make good decisions, and learn from their experiences. Establishing those habits from the very beginning will help our students have a successful year. As we move beyond the first week and settle into the rhythm of the school year, I am excited to see our students learn, grow, make memories, and continue to make Anderson a place where everyone can belong and thrive.
I want to thank Carolyn Nowaske, our PTSA President, for coming in early on the first day of school to provide breakfast items for our staff courtesy of the AMS PTSA. We are so appreciative of the support we get from our PTSA! Lastly, please join me in welcoming Jimmy Sanney as a new Paraeducator at AMS. Jimmy had not been hired when I mentioned all of our other new hires in my previous update so I wanted to make sure he was recognized as a new staff member as well.

SCHOOL NEWS AND LOCAL HAPPENINGS
Updated Cell Phone and School Device Policy for 2026-27
In accordance with State of Michigan Law signed into law in February, 2026, and Berkley School District Board Policy, AMS enforces an Away for the Day electronic device policy to reduce distractions and irresponsible use of technology. From 8:15-3:15, including lunch time, cell phones and personal devices must be put away. Cell phones brought into a classroom must be put in the cell phone caddy in each class. Additionally, students may not use personal devices such as laptops or tablets for classroom use or any other part of the school day, including lunch, and must use their school issued Chromebook for all school use during the school day.
Students who violate these guidelines will be issued the following consequences:
1st and 2nd offense - the staff member will take the device and give it to the office to be returned to the student at 3:15. A Parent will be notified each time the device is taken.
3rd and 4th offense - the staff member will take the device and give it to the office and a parent or guardian will be notified to pick up the device.
5th offense or thereafter - The student will be required to turn their device into the office from 8:15-3:15 or they can leave the phone at home.
Cell Phone Misuse - Any student who takes a picture or video of another student or staff member, during the school day or outside of the school day, without that student or staff member’s consent, and shares the picture or video with others through group chats or social media may be issued school discipline if it impacts the school environment.
Student Conduct and Extra-Curricular Activity Participation
Factors that may reduce or eliminate a student from participating in extra-curricular activities:
- 30 or more tardies in a semester.
- 18 or more absences from school (10% or more of the school year).
- 2 or more suspensions from school will result in removal from attending the optional 7th Grade UP trip or the optional 8th Grade Washington DC Trip.

Item Drop Off Changes
This year, we have placed a table outside of the vestibule at the main front entrance for familes to drop off items to students. This will help reduce distractions for our Secretaries, especially at the very beginning of the day. If there is ever a time when you need to drop something off for your child, please place it on the table and we will get the item to them ASAP.

AMS Peer to Peer Program
The AMS Peer to Peer Program is a school-wide program designed to increase academic, independence, and social engagement opportunities for students with autism and other disabilities. Peers model typical academic and social behavior while students with disabilities can practice and use skills in natural settings by learning from peers in a positive and dignified manner. Authentic relationships form as students actively participate in activities together.
