MĂłnica Farris, Ed.D., NBCT, Education Specialist for English Language Learners, highlights innovative ways Madison City Schools is celebrating and strengthening multilingual family engagement.

Assistant Principal, Kiley Rikard, believes that every corner of Mill Creek Elementary should foster belonging, and their media center is a prime example. For 17 years, Library Media Specialist Kris Gray has nurtured the media center into more than just a library; it’s a hub for connection and cultural exchange. A few years back, when a Japanese mother sought a way to get involved at school, she discovered the perfect space at Mill Creek’s library! Though her English was limited, Kris Gray welcomed her warmly and found tasks that transcended language barriers, such as shelving books using the Dewey Decimal System, cataloguing material, decorating bulletin boards, and organizing materials essential to the library’s daily running. “We want moms from all cultures to feel welcomed in the library,” Gray explains.

In the article below this one, you’ll find a link to the Phones in Focus survey. This study aims to give all educators an opportunity to inform and improve school cell phone policies and their implementation.

In addition, I’ve created a special survey just for Alabama public school K–12 librarians. After speaking with many librarians across the state, we’ve heard reports of increased circulation and engagement since the Focus Act went into effect.

We would like feedback from all public school K-12 librarians in Alabama. Please take a few minutes to complete this librarian-specific survey by February 28. Your feedback will help us understand any impact the Focus Act may have had on your library and its services.

FOCUS Act Survey FOCUS Act Survey

As part of the requirements set forth in the FOCUS Act, and referenced in Memo FY25-1010, ALSDE has partnered with the National Governor’s Association and Dr. Angela Duckworth to conduct a survey to assess compliance with the Act. We are requesting participation and feedback from each school principal, as well as other educators throughout the state.

The Phones in Focus Survey is a five-minute survey. Responses will be kept confidential and only reported in summary form. The information gathered will be reviewed as part of the process for carrying out the requirements of the Act.

We are only 1 month away from our Alabama School Library Association conference! The conference will be on February 2-3, 2026 at the Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach, AL. It’s not too late to register! All checks must be postmarked by Friday, January 9. The deadline for paying online is Saturday, January 17. There will be NO onsite registration. We will be providing lunch for attendees on both days. This year there will be 49 different sessions to pick from during our 7 concurrent sessions. We are also excited to host Candace Fleming and Amanda Hunt as our keynote speakers. Don’t miss this chance to both learn and network with librarians from across the state. We can’t wait to see you there! Please email Jacquelyn Wilson (aslalibconference@aslalib.com) with any questions regarding the ASLA conference.

During All of Your Free Time, as a Teacher During All of Your Free Time, as a Teacher

William Smith and Scotty Brooks from Decatur High School share insights on Brisk Teaching, a powerful tool designed to streamline lesson planning and enhance classroom engagement. Curious about how it can simplify your teaching workflow? Read on for more details and practical tips!

Where do you spend most of your time, as a teacher? Honestly. The grind of class preparation is exhausting, to include but not limited to lesson plans, grade-level differentiation, IEPs, 504s, English secondary learners, contacting guardians, grading to understand if the last stand of lessons were affective and on and on . . . and the first bell hasn’t even rung yet. If most teachers were honest, the amount of preparation has the opposite effect on how deep and diverse the lessons can be. The teacher, many times, will opt out and resort to handouts, videos or bookwork.

AL-MTSS and the Library Media Specialist: A Powerful Support for Every Learner AL-MTSS and the Library Media Specialist: A Powerful Support for Every Learner

Alabama’s Multi-Tiered system of Supports (AL-MTSS) is built on the belief that every student can learn when the right support is in place at the right time. While classroom instruction and interventions often take center stage, library media specialists play a vital, yet sometimes overlooked, role in strengthening Tier I, II and III systems. As outlined through guidance from Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) and AL- MTSS Problem-Solving Team (PST) resources, effective MTSS implementation is a shared responsibility, not the work of one role or department.

At Tier I, library media specialists support high-quality core instruction by curating standards-aligned resources, promoting literacy across content areas, and creating inclusive spaces that foster belonging and engagement. These universal supports help reduce barriers before students struggle, aligning with the preventative intent of AL-MTSS. Through collaboration with teachers and instructional leaders, the library becomes a hub for access and academic enrichment.

Enjoy the following article from Jana Groghan, NBCT and librarian at Wills Valley Elementary School in Fort Payne, as she reveals a clever way to encourage teacher checkouts.

I am always looking for new ways to increase circulation in our library at Wills Valley Elementary School (K-2), and I have found the GOLDEN ticket for increasing TEACHER checkouts each month by placing seasonal selections in the workrooms around school.

How it works:

Pull seasonal selections a few weeks before they are needed: We LOVE collecting books with

sounds scapes from NOVEL EFFECT, and we have purchased a selection of paperback books

for teacher checkouts that are stored in the library until they are needed. Scholastic and Amazon are my go to places to purchase paperback books for teachers.

Author: Alice McGill

Molly Bannaky tells the true story of Molly Walsh, a young English woman living in the late 1600s. After being accused of stealing milk, Molly faces harsh punishment under English law. To avoid execution, she becomes an indentured servant and is sent to the American colonies. When her term of service ends, Molly earns her freedom and starts a farm in Maryland. She later marries a freed African man, defying social norms of the time. Together, they raise a family, and Molly becomes the grandmother of Benjamin Banneker, a brilliant African American scientist, mathematician, and astronomer.
