Quarterly Newsletter: March 2025
From the Desk of the Executive Director
This past quarter kicked off the second half of the school year with incredible momentum! Our advisors continued their dedicated work in schools alongside district staff, providing one-on-one support for college admissions, financial aid, and career planning. We maintained our monthly Virtual County Workshops, participated in district FAFSA events, and hosted our annual Presidents’ Day FAFSA event—an outstanding success in expanding college access.
We proudly celebrated three valued team members on their work anniversaries, recognizing their dedication, talent, and impact at CCAC. Additionally, we were honored to receive generous support from the Jackson Care Hub, Dawn Foods, and the Pat and Willis Foundation. Having two of these partners visit our office to present their contributions and meet our team was a special reminder of the community’s commitment to student success.
As always, our students continue to inspire us with their tireless determination—be sure to check out our Students of the Month and our featured Business and College of the Quarter!
We also resumed our Kids2College and Pathways2Professional Skilled Trades (K2C/PPST) and Junior’s Over the Local Circuit (JOLC) visits, which are made possible by the incredible companies and colleges that help students explore future opportunities. Meanwhile, our team remained engaged in community events, attending the Chamber’s MLK Jr. Diversity Celebration Breakfast, Jackson Women’s Week, and Jackson’s Fifth Black Excellence Awards—all of which reinforced the values of unity and service. Additionally, our advisors represented at local school events, including Northwest High School’s College Fair, the Grass Lake’s Community Resource Night, and the Jackson High School Student Ambassador Dinner. Their commitment ensures students receive guidance at every step of their journey.
Beyond the local community, the CCAC was represented at Michigan College Access Network’s 8th Annual College Access Advocacy Day in Lansing, ensuring that our voices are being heard to progress college and career access.
As we move through the year, we’re keeping the momentum going with scholarship opportunities, FAFSA insights, and student feedback! A few local scholarships we’ve been highlighting—Sigmund, Lammers Heating & Cooling, AAUW, and American One—have deadlines fast approaching, so don’t miss out! We’re also a quarter of the way through FAFSA season, and we’ve been tracking key data trends. Plus, take a look at what our clients are sharing about their experiences with us.
We are grateful for the incredible progress made this quarter and for the unwavering support of our community in making this work possible!

Building Connections: At the Center & In the Community
Supporting Students on President’s Day: FAFSA Completion Event
We hosted our annual President’s Day FAFSA Event last month, where we extended our hours to offer students and families additional time to complete their financial aid applications with expert support. To make the day even more rewarding, we provided a free BBQ lunch and gave students Amazon gift cards as a “way to go gift” for completing their FAFSA. 13 students attended, taking full advantage of the resources and support available to help them move closer to their college and career goals. Check out some photos from the day!
Community Support: Grateful for Your Partnership
This quarter, we were fortunate to receive generous contributions from the Jackson Care Hub, Dawn Foods, and the Pat and Willis Foundation. We were especially touched to have representatives from two of these organizations visit our office to present their donations and connect with our team. Their support is a meaningful reminder of the strong commitment our community has to ensuring student success. We deeply appreciate these partnerships and look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts to empower students in their college and career journeys.
Community Engagement: Strengthening Connections
Supporting School Events: Engaging with Students and Families
This quarter, our advisors were proud to represent the College and Career Access Center at several local school events. From Northwest High School’s College Fair to Grass Lake’s Community Resource Night and the Jackson High School Student Ambassador Dinner, we had the opportunity to connect with students, families, and educators. These events allowed us to share valuable resources and support, further strengthening our partnerships with local schools and helping students take the next steps in their college and career journeys.
Advocacy in Action: Representing CCAC at MCAN’s College Access Advocacy Day
The College and Career Access Center was proud to be represented at MCAN’s 8th Annual College Access Advocacy Day in Lansing! Our Senior Advisor/Community Initiatives Coordinator, Brian Green, joined advocates in meeting with Senator Sue Shink and the offices of State Representatives Carrie Rheingans and Kathy Schmaltz. It was a fantastic opportunity to discuss college affordability and the barriers impacting postsecondary success. A special highlight was Brian being in the same group as former CCAC advisor Skye, reinforcing our team’s lasting commitment to college access. Thank you to MCAN and the legislators who took time to engage in these essential conversations!

Students of the Quarter
January Student of the Month
This month, we are excited to spotlight Kaydence Becker, a senior at Springport High School, who is preparing to pursue her passion for helping others at Spring Arbor University, where she will major in psychology and minor in social work.
From a young age, Kaydence has been drawn to making a difference in people’s lives. Growing up with her great-grandmother living with her family, Kaydence witnessed the love and dedication her mom showed in caring for her, and when she was old enough, she helped as well. This experience sparked her desire to assist those in need. Her compassion for others and personal experiences have shaped her goal of pursuing a career in social work or counseling, where she hopes to offer support and spread love to those who need it most.
Outside of academics, Kaydence stays busy with competitive cheerleading and coaching youth cheerleading. She also volunteers at Springport Bible Church, where she finds inspiration in people like Sarah Schreiber. Sarah has been a consistent source of warmth and encouragement for Kaydence, always greeting her with a hug, no matter her own struggles. Sarah’s unwavering faith and trust in the Lord have had a profound impact on Kaydence’s own spiritual journey.

His passion for entrepreneurship comes from his desire to work for himself, build something meaningful, and take control of his future. Throughout high school, Marco has remained committed to his academics, proud of maintaining strong grades while balancing his other interests.
Outside the classroom, Marco stays dedicated to fitness and will be competing in track this year. He credits his parents for shaping his work ethic and determination, and he’s especially grateful for the guidance he’s received from Jorge at the College and Career Access Center, who has helped him with college and scholarship applications. His advice to others? “Never stop fighting, no matter what other people say.” With his mindset and ambition, there's no doubt Marco is on the path to success!
March Student of the Month
Meet La’zay’vair Akines, a dedicated senior at Western High School who is focused on building a bright future! After graduation, he plans to attend Central Michigan University or Grand Valley State University, where he will study business to develop the skills needed to achieve his future goals. A self-motivated individual, La’zay’vair believes that understanding business will open doors and provide him with greater opportunities.
Outside of academics, La’zay’vair is passionate about track and field, basketball, and, of course, good food! Himself—he’s always pushing to improve and be the best version of himself. His advice to his peers is simple but powerful: "Keep being yourself no matter what people say, stay positive, and be proud of how far you’ve come." Wise words from someone who knows that with hard work and belief in yourself, “It will work out.”

Business of the Quarter
The Michigan Theatre of Jackson, a historic landmark in downtown, has been a beloved part of the community since its opening on April 30, 1930. Designed by architect Maurice Finkel, it was originally built as a grand movie palace and vaudeville venue. Today, it continues to serve as a cultural hub, bringing people together through the magic of live performances and film.
The theatre’s mission is to preserve its rich history while embracing new artistic opportunities. They are dedicated to keeping this historic venue thriving and ensuring it remains a space for creative expression. The theatre's legacy is one of connection, community, and unforgettable experiences for generations to come.
A typical day at the theatre includes event planning, technical setups, and customer service. By evening, the venue comes alive with shows and performances that create special moments for the community. One particularly memorable event featured Hal Holbrook’s one-man show as Mark Twain, where the unique atmosphere of the theatre added to the magic of the performance.
For the Michigan Theatre, it’s the deep connections fostered through personal experiences that make it special. Whether it’s families watching classic films or friends creating memories, the theatre has remained a place for community bonding for decades.
Looking to the future, the theatre remains committed to its mission while embracing new opportunities for artistic growth. As the team advises: "Starting a business takes passion and persistence—stay focused on your mission, connect with your community, and adapt to challenges."
