Topper Talk
Back to School 2026
Message from the Principal
Dear Hilltoppers and Families,
As we prepare to begin a new school year, I want to welcome each of you back to Los Alamos High School. It is truly an honor to serve as your new principal, and I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for our students, staff, and community. As we begin the school year, you'll notice a few important changes that reflect this commitment.
Introducing POWER-HOUR! We have transitioned from WIN Time to POWER-HOUR. After carefully reviewing how instructional time is used, we believe this new structure better supports our goal of ensuring students receive timely academic assistance while also providing meaningful opportunities for enrichment. New Bell Schedule
POWER-HOUR combines:
35 minutes for lunch
35 minutes dedicated to academic support and enrichment
This time is intentionally built into every school day (M-Th) to help students stay on track before small challenges become larger obstacles.
During POWER-HOUR, students may:
Receive extra help or intervention from teachers.
Make up missed work after an absence.
Complete assignments before they become overdue.
Take assessments or finish classwork.
Participate in clubs, enrichment opportunities, or other activities.
Here are a few Power-Hour articles for your reference:

Families play an important role in helping students make the most of this opportunity. We encourage you to talk with your student using this Student Planning Tool about using Power Hour intentionally and seeking support whenever it is needed.
NOTE: Students who are failing (or are at risk of failing) a course will be assigned to a teacher's Power Hour for targeted academic support. Attendance at Power Hour, when assigned by a teacher, counselor or administrator, is required. Failure to attend may result in loss of off campus and/or parking privileges.
Change always brings questions, and I welcome them. Every adjustment we're making has been guided by one central question: How can we better serve our students?
I'm excited to partner with our students, families, and staff as we continue moving Forward, Better together. Thank you for your continued support, trust, and commitment to Los Alamos High School.
I look forward to an outstanding year filled with learning, growth, and success for every Hilltopper.
Go Toppers!!

Getting Ready for the Start of School
In preparation for the coming year, please see the information below:
Schedules for the 2026-2027 school year will be viewable in PowerSchool on Thursday, August 6th by the end of the day.
All students will take new ID photos along with their School Pictures on August 25th & 26th. Additional details regarding Photo Days will be sent to your email at a later date.
Students who would like to request a locker should complete the Locker Request form. Hallway lockers are no longer automatically assigned to any student.
Freshmen and new students will pick up new Chromebooks.
Please note that there is not a separate day of Registration for sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Instead, the first day of school as well as the first weeks of school will incorporate the tasks typically completed on Registration day(s). Teachers will be taking classes to the Textbook Center to check out textbooks and reading materials at pre-arranged dates/times.
Cell Phones
As in previous years, LAHS will be restricting student cell phone use during instructional time. In order for us to remain compliant with the new state law, students will not be able to use cell phones during any class time, and cell phone use is strictly prohibited in all restrooms and locker rooms.
Please have conversations with your students to ensure they are not using cell phones in class, and limit any communication with your student during class time. We don't want them to get in trouble! We understand things arise from time to time, but if you need to speak with your student, please try to contact them during passing periods or lunch, or call the front office and we can arrange for them to contact you in a different setting.
Thank you for your support!
Band and NJROTC
Stiudents planning to participate in Band or NJROTC need to review the Rank One Instructions for Band/NJROTC. You will be required to complete a physical as well as hazing and concussion courses prior to participating in these activities. This letter includes the RankOne Sports step-by-step instructions and information on Physical Exams if you have not already submitted them for Athletics.
Email or call Colleen Swavely (Activities Assistant) at c.swavely@laschools.net or (505) 663-2537 if you have any questions.

Breakfast and Lunch
Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) is pleased to offer a free breakfast and lunch to all of our students.
LAPS utilizes the Offer Versus Serve (OVS) model pertaining to USDA and NSLP requirements. This model provides students with more of a choice for both breakfast and lunch service.
Our food service provider will make substitutions for students with disabilities that restrict diet, on a case-by-case basis. These substitutions must be supported by a written statement from a licensed physician. If a student has a dietary need this must be communicated to the school site nurse. The school site will inform our food service partner so they can prepare the requested meal for the student. You can view menus online at https://laschools.nutrislice.com/menu.
Even though all students can participate in the breakfast and lunch program we encourage all families to complete the free and reduced meal program application. These applications are used for other important funding opportunities which support the district and our students. Also, students become eligible for reduced fees at school sites based on these applications. Please use the online option at www.schoolcafe.com.
If you are unable to complete the online option please download a copy of the Free and Reduced Meal Program Application (en español). Instructions for this application can be found at USDA Application Instructions. Email the completed form to the Assistant Superintendent for Operations and Safety at m.johnson@laschools.net.
If you have any questions or comments regarding the school lunch program please send an email to m.johnson@laschools.net.
