TOP HEADLINES
The Lunar New Year is of special significance and represents a major celebration for Chinese and many other Asian people throughout the world, including families with roots in countries that include China, Vietnam, South Korea, and Singapore.
The Lunar New Year began in China more than 4,000 years ago and is widely celebrated with community activities and cultural performances. It represents a number of important traditional, social, and cultural events and values, many of which have become customary to observe in the United States.
The Conejo Valley Unified School District is committed to honoring and valuing the traditions and cultural significance of the Lunar New Year and the contributions and accomplishments of Asian and Pacific Islander communities. Staff, students, and community members are encouraged to learn about the history of Lunar New Year and celebrate with purposeful activities. Click here to learn more.
Rolling Onto the School Cafeteria Menu? Westlake Hills Students Give Sushi 👍👍
Our dedicated Child Nutrition team continues to look for new, fun ways to enhance the nutritious meal offerings available to our CVUSD students. Last week, Westlake Hills Elementary School students in 1st-5th grade had the opportunity to taste test a brand new potential offering: California Rolls. This sushi was a big hit with students overwhelmingly voting "Let's Roll With It!" as a new menu item. This new offering would be available once a month as a lunch option at CVUSD elementary schools. Growing in Excellence: Elementary Teachers Complete Science of Reading Trainings
The CVUSD is focused on implementing best practices to support students' success in the classroom. Starting in December, our Instructional Services team hosted three different Science of Reading sessions for all of the District's second grade teachers to complete. Last year, all kindergarten and first grade teachers participated in this training. The Science of Reading is a body of research that incorporates insights and research from disciplines that include developmental psychology, educational psychology, cognitive science, and cognitive neuroscience. In short, the Science of Reading has demonstrated the methods that best help children learn to read, from the earliest steps in spoken language to being able to successfully decode unfamiliar words.
A big thank you to our Instructional Services team for leading this professional development and to our dedicated teachers for their engagement and successful completion of this training!

Banyan Celebrates Community Heroes at Annual Event
Just ahead of the President's Day weekend holiday, our Banyan Elementary School hosted its annual Community Heroes Assembly & Touch-a-Truck event. The schoolwide gathering recognized the incredible Active-Duty Military Members, Veterans, First Responders, and Public Service Heroes who our Bobcat students call family. We extend a heartfelt thank you to all who were honored for their service, dedication, and the example you set for our community each and every day.
