We are getting close to the Thanksgiving break, and I want to wish each of you a wonderful and restful holiday. You deserve time to recharge and enjoy time with loved ones. Thank you for the heart and effort you bring to our campus every day.

Important This Week

ELA Benchmark Testing – November 19th

Please remember that ELA Benchmark Testing will take place on Tuesday, November 19th. Thank you in advance for ensuring a smooth and structured testing environment. Your attention to procedures, transitions, and student support makes all the difference.

Instructional Excellence

• Keep expectations visible: Reinforce classroom expectations daily so students remain focused and accountable.
• Maximize engagement: Every minute matters. Plan purposeful lessons, transitions, and activities that deepen thinking and collaboration.
• Promote student voice: Provide opportunities for questioning, discussion, and partner or group talk. Aim for a 60/40 student-to-teacher talk ratio.
• Push for rigor: Encourage productive struggle with DOK 2–3 tasks and appropriate scaffolding.
• Act on data: Use exit tickets and assessments to identify next steps for reteaching, targeted support, and enrichment.
• Embrace PLC culture: Continue to collaborate intentionally around student needs and strategies that support growth.

Operational Priorities

• Cell phones: Continue enforcing expectations consistently using CVISD procedures.
• Model professionalism: Avoid personal phone use or earbuds during instructional time.
• Attendance and safety: Take attendance within the first 10 minutes and monitor student movement with fidelity.
• Hallway visibility: Be present during transitions to support safety and reinforce expectations.
• Student movement: Limit hall passes during the first and last 10 minutes of class and ensure students have visible passes.
• Student IDs: Students must wear IDs at all times. Please remind and follow up when needed.
• Tardies: Apply the tardy policy consistently. Every minute of instruction counts.
• Advisory: Teach advisory lessons with fidelity to build relationships and campus-wide routines.

Have a wonderful week and a great Thanksgiving, Hornets!

Lesson Plans
zoom_out_map Show in original size

Lesson plans need to be prepared in Forethought one FULL week in advance of the actual lesson and must be submitted in Eduphoria by 4:00 pm every Friday. This timeline allows all parties to review the plans a week prior to teaching the lesson, ensuring everything is aligned and ready for quality first time instruction.

This requirement applies to both TEAM and INDIVIDUAL lesson plans. Remember, your lesson plans must be aligned with TEKS/STAAR objectives as well as the district’s scope and sequence for your course (if applicable).

Each lesson plan should include:

  • TEKS
  • Content Objective
  • Language Objective
  • Essential Question
  • Identification of where you are integrating WICOR throughout the lesson
  • Support for sub-pops (SPED, EB, target groups, etc.)
Attendance
zoom_out_map Show in original size

Ensure that you are taking attendance in Skyward within the first 10 minutes of EACH class period.

Accurate attendance is crucial, so be diligent in completing this task PROMPTLY each day.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

  • Funding: In Texas, public schools receive a significant portion of their funding based on ADA. Our funding periods are below.

  • A DAY: 1A
  • B DAY: 5A

Accountability: High attendance rates are often correlated with better student performance and outcomes.

Student Success: Regular attendance is directly linked to student success. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well academically, graduate on time, and develop positive habits that will benefit them throughout their lives.

We have begun the process of giving students PBIS points. Please encourage the use of points in all classes.

PBIS is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional, and academic success. Students will receive their pbis badge soon.

How to use PBIS in the classroom:

- Establish clear, positive behavior expectations for your classroom (e.g., Respectful, Responsible, Safe)

- Create a system for recognizing and rewarding students who follow your expectations.

- Be consistent in acknowledging positive behavior. Make sure to recognize and reward desired behaviors frequently

- Plan regular celebrations or special activities to acknowledge and reward consistent positive behavior

Important PBIS information:

- Your class rosters have already been added to the PBIS accounts. All you have to do is login and begin rewarding positive behavior

- Use PBIS with fidelity. Each point should matter

-Each teacher needs to set up a class store and allow students to use

- Communicate with your students on how/when to purchase items from your store

-Student can access the PBIS store through classlink

Please show this video to your students in advisory to explain PBIS.

Positive Referrals
zoom_out_map Show in original size

We want to encourage everyone to take a moment to submit positive referrals for our students. Celebrating their efforts and growth can significantly boost their motivation and self-esteem.

Why Positive Referrals Matter:

  • Builds Confidence: Students thrive on recognition, motivating them to continue positive behavior.
  • Fosters a Positive Culture: Highlighting the good creates a ripple effect across the school.
  • Strengthens Relationships: Positive interactions build trust between students and staff.
  • Encourages Peer Modeling: It inspires others to follow positive examples.

We challenge you to submit at least two positive referrals a day. Let’s continue to reinforce the positive!

Here is the link for the positive referrals.

BACKGROUND: Gov. Greg Abbott signed Texas House Bill 1481 (HB 1481) into law, which requires all Texas public school districts and open-enrollment charter schools to implement written policies banning students from using “personal communication devices” - such as cell phones - during the school day.

What students are NOT allowed to use under HB 1481 during class:

  • Any wireless electronic communication device capable of transmitting and/or receiving data

    • Smartphones

    • Smart watches

    • Personal tablets

    • Text messaging devices

    • Personal laptops

    • “Smart Wear” (Examples: Bluetooth headphones, earphones, smart glasses

We are implementing new restroom procedures to better manage student behavior and reduce vandalism. Please review the following changes carefully:

  1. 300 Hallway Restrooms

    • Closed throughout the day.

    • Open only during transition times and then locked again.

  2. 100 Hallway Restrooms

    • Available for student use before and after lunch only.

  3. Cafeteria Restrooms

    • During lunch periods, the only restrooms open will be those next to the cafeteria.

  4. Safety Monitor

    • A safety monitor will be stationed outside open restrooms at all times to assist with supervision.

  5. Classroom Procedures

    • Ensure that students always have a pass when leaving your room.

    • Do not send students to the restroom during the first 10 minutes or the last 10 minutes of class.

    • Monitor the amount of time students are out. No student should be gone longer than 5 minutes.

Your cooperation and consistency are essential to make these procedures effective. Thank you for helping us maintain a safe and respectful learning environment.

As we continue working to ensure a smooth and safe dismissal each afternoon, please make sure students are only released when their mode of transportation is called. We have recently had students leaving class early and roaming the hallways or visiting other classrooms before their group has been dismissed, which creates supervision and safety concerns.

Please be sure to monitor students as they exit your classroom and confirm they are responding to their assigned dismissal call.

Additionally, please remember to refer to the Google Sheet you completed indicating each student’s mode of transportation. If a student’s dismissal plan changes, update the Google Sheet so the information remains accurate.

For Band and Choir students:
• These students release with the walkers and not before dismissal begins.
• Students must have the correct pass to go to Band or Choir:

  • Pink pass for Band

  • Orange pass for Choir
If they do not have the appropriate pass, please do not release them.

Your consistency and attention to these procedures support student safety and ensure an orderly dismissal. Thank you for your cooperation.

This is a reminder that when a student enters class with a tardy slip from the AP secretaries, the tardy must also be recorded in Skyward. The slip alone does not notify parents. If the tardy is not entered in Skyward, parents are unaware of how many times their student has been late to class. Entering the tardy in Skyward ensures accurate attendance records and supports communication with families.

Additionally, please remember to consistently follow the AJJH Tardy Policy outlined below. Thank you for your support in maintaining school expectations and accountability.

AJJH Tardy Policy

  • 1st Tardy: Warning
  • 2nd Tardy: Warning #2 with teacher conference- Parents must be contacted.
  • 3rd Tardy: Teacher consequence; parent contact through SchoolStatus- Parents must be contacted and provided documentation of teacher detention.
  • 4th Tardy: Teacher referral to administrator- Teachers must provide administration with documentation of tardies and consequences administered.
  • 5th Tardy: 2-hour Saturday detention at Kolarik- Teachers must provide administration with documentation of tardies and consequences administered.
  • Failure to attend will result in a 4-hour Saturday detention at Kolarik or ISS.
  • 6th Tardy: 4-hour Saturday detention at Kolarik- Failure to attend will result in ISS.
  • 7th Tardy (or more): ISS (In-School Suspension)
