Message From the Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We wrapped up the last full week of the school year. I can't believe we are only three days away from closing out another school year! Our students were fortunate to participate in a End of the Year activity every day this week. On Monday June 12th, our chorus students visited Davenport School to sing in the Choral Festival. On Tuesday, June 13th our Gifted and Talented Department hosted Civil War Day. On Wednesday, June 14th fifth graders enjoyed a fun-filled day at Castaway Cove. Thursday, June 15th students participated in Fun Day. Finally, on Friday, June 16th the Egg Harbor Township Police Department hosted our annual DARE Day. We would like to say a special thank you to Parents Club and the Egg Harbor Township Police Department for helping to make this week special for our students. We look forward to seeing everyone on back on Monday to close out the 2022-2023 school year. Have a great weekend.

Jim Battersby

Principal

Miller School Geography Fair

Over seventy fifth graders participated in the Miller School geography fair this year. Students completed an independent study of a country of their choice and presented their learning during an interview with our judges. Eighteen prizes and awards were given out to the top three participants in each continent. The geography fair was visited by many classes the following day. We are very proud of our fifth grade geographers!

National Megalodon Day

Did you know that June 15th is National Megalodon Day? Yep! The students in Ms. Ims' ELA class celebrated the day by researching facts about the amazing creature. Once they found information such as, diet, appearance, habitat, etc., they practiced their computer skills by creating a google slides presentation to publish their findings. Some groups even got creative and added the JAWS theme song to their presentations. The activity was quite a "catch"!

The Water Cycle

After learning about the Water Cycle in our POR Science class, we applied out learning to create our very own Water Cycle. We added soil, water and glass to the bottom of a bowl, placed a small cup in the middle of the bowl and then covered it with saran wrap. The bowls were then placed in the sun for a few hours and the cycle became evident. The next day, we observed the bowls again and the water droplets that formed on the top of the saran wrap ran down and dripped into the cup, simulating the condensation, evaporation and precipitation of the cycle. All students had the opportunity to work together. They were able to assist each other with the project, when needed, and explain to other students what they were making and what the project was going to prove. Shared our project pictures and details with parents to ensure they can have intentional conversation at home regarding the Water Cycle.

Civil War Day

On Tuesday, June 13th, the 5th grade Gifted and Talented classes here at Miller hosted our annual “Civil War Day”! This annual event is the culmination of a unit of study of American history from explorers to the American Civil War. This event is like a "living history museum" where students work together to create a presentation on a topic of their choice from the Civil War period. In all, there were 59 groups that presented to 5th grade classes over five class periods.

When presenting, each student worked in concert with their partners to memorize their part and bring their presentation to life. They did this by adding a "wow factor" and/or creating a product to go with it. (We call this STEM meets the Civil War!) For example, this year, one group of students who talked about seacoast and mortar cannons created a scaled down version of a seacoast cannon mounted to the "wall" of a fort that actually worked, shooting out small, light “cannon” balls. Another group talked about 19th century photography, making a camera with moving parts, and our telegraph group made a replica telegraph machine to explain how it worked. We also had girls dressed in period clothing, boys in soldier's uniforms, and a group talking about and displaying a variety of soldier's accoutrements. Other groups discussed 19th century food and recipes, and they actually made a variety of foods like apple pie and jam that were able to be sampled. Many students like our women spies and women soldiers added to their presentations by visiting thrift stores to find clothing that resembled that of the 19th century, so they were “in character”!

All in all, this was a great learning opportunity not only for the student presenters but for everyone involved. Well done everyone!

Title 1 Family Engagement Night

All Egg Harbor Township families of students in grades K-5 were invited to participate in our Title 1 Family Engagement Night in the Miller School cafeteria on May 22,2023. Ms. Calascione and Ms. Mack, Title 1 Parent Coordinators, began by introducing our staff, administrators, and community partners. After grabbing pizza and snacks, everyone settled in to hear a few words from Mr. Battersby, Miller principal. He spoke of what to expect if students are transitioning to the Miller School. Also, he gave an overview of what entering middle school will look like. Dr. Singer and Mrs. Thomas were also on hand to field any questions or concerns. Various organizations from the EHT community were on hand to provide information to families. Three separate stations were set up and the following organizations designed to make connection with services offered within our community: EHT police department DARE program-Officer Colella, Atlanticare Healthy Schools Representative from our Miller School, Ms. Katie Bosworth, and EHT Recreation Department Director, Mr. Rick Audet. Offerings included information about our DARE program (drugs and safety), Rec Dept program (activities-sports to knitting), and Atlanticare (healthy eating & exercise) Additionally, Mr. Schafer and Mrs. Biggins (RTI teachers) displayed summer reading books from Mrs. Alleva, Media Specialist from Miller School. Recommendations based on appropriate academic reading levels as well as student interest books were made. A take-home packet with suggestions and discussion starters was provided by Mrs. Biggins. On the other side of the cafeteria, Ms. Calascione spoke with parents about supporting students in math as they bridge to the next grade level. Math packets were available for all students entering 1st grade through 7th grade. While Ms. Calascione was speaking with parents, Mrs. Nhan, 5th grade math teacher, and Ms. Bower, 4th grade ELA teacher, assisted students in planting flowers under the theme of “Plant Yourself Where You Can Grow”. Students were able to discuss setting personal goals for the upcoming school year. The evening ended with a survey to assist decisions moving forward on future Title 1 Family Nights. After cookies and mini-beach balls were distributed, three raffles were pulled from attending families. A great time was had by all!
