WPS District Updates
NOVEMBER 2025
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear Wilmington Families, Staff, and Community,
As the crisp air and shorter days usher in the month of November, I want to take a moment to reflect on all we have to be grateful for as a school community. This time of year reminds us of the importance of gratitude, connection, and continued growth — all of which are central to the work we do every day in Wilmington Public Schools.
We are now well into the school year, and I continue to be impressed by the dedication of our educators, the curiosity of our students, and the support of our families. Whether it’s the thoughtful lessons taking place in classrooms, the energy on our athletic fields, or the creativity showcased in our arts programs, there is so much to celebrate across the district.
As we move into November, I want to highlight a few important themes and reminders:
- Gratitude and Community
- Social-Emotional Learning & Wellness
- Upcoming Events and Calendar Reminders
Wishing you and your family a joyful and restful Thanksgiving season.
Warm regards,
David Thomson, EdD, Interim Superintendent

Important Notice
Vehicle Idling Near Schools
It has come to our attention that vehicle pick-up lines at our schools are not fully in compliance with Massachusetts law (MGL Part I, Title XIV, Chapter 90, Section 16B), which prohibits unnecessary motor vehicle idling in the vicinity of a school or on school grounds.
This law is designed to protect the air quality around our schools and safeguard our students from prolonged exposure to vehicle emissions. Reducing idling not only helps our children breathe cleaner air but also saves fuel and reduces operating costs for drivers.
The Wilmington Public School district is in the process of posting reminder signs at each school to raise awareness of this regulation, which has been in effect for several years. We ask for your cooperation in following this important law and helping us maintain a healthy environment for our students and staff.
Please note that violations of this law are subject to fines of up to $100 for the first offense and up to $500 for subsequent offenses.
Thank you for your continued support in keeping our schools safe and environmentally friendly.

Boutwell & Wildwood & WMS Collaboration
Big Readers & Little Listeners
Last month, our 7th-graders from the Middle School visited the Boutwell and the Wildwood to share their Children's Book Projects with the kindergarten students. These were original children’s books the middle schoolers wrote and illustrated themselves.
The kindergarteners were captivated by the creative stories, colorful pictures, and imaginative characters brought to life by their older peers. It was a wonderful experience filled with smiles, laughter, and a shared love of reading. The younger students were inspired by the big kids’ storytelling, and the 7th graders were so proud to share their work with such an enthusiastic audience. It was a joyful celebration of creativity, connection, and the magic of books. We look forward to making this an annual tradition.

WHS
Social Studies Department
Wilmington High School is excited to be offering History of Wilmington, a new semester-long course that allows students to explore the rich historical roots of their own community. Throughout the first quarter, students have researched notable Wilmington residents, examined the history of their neighborhoods, and attended guest lectures from Town Museum Curator, Matt Beres, about Wilmington’s connections to the American Revolution.
Students also explored the Wilmington Memorial Library’s historical artifacts and visited the town’s colonial-era cemetery to analyze gravestone designs and inscriptions. Most recently, Historical Commission member Joe Jackson led students on a full-day bus tour of Wilmington, featuring stops at Harnden Tavern, the Middlesex Canal, Clapp’s Grist Mill, an early hops kiln, and Silver Lake. This engaging new course continues to foster a deeper appreciation for the town’s history and the people who helped shape it.
Model UN/Debate Club
The WHS Model UN/Debate Club traveled to St. John's High School in Shrewsbury in October for a MUN conference. The students debated:
- Peacekeeping In The Modern Space Age,
- The Second Amendment Dilemma,
- Infectious Disease,
- Clone Wars,
- Piracy and Maritime Law, and
- The Threat of Criminal-Political Networks to Regional Security.
Great job Ari Donn, Grace Prendergast, Jackson Kiley, Jackson Griffith, George Papageorgiou, Jason Michaud, Purnima Thapa, & Miranda Manfredi. And a special congratulations to Miranda for earning a "shout out" as an outstanding delegate in her first ever Model UN Conference!
