November 2-13

Sherwood Park - Fort Saskatchewan - Vegreville
Message from the Principal
Hey all, Monday November 2 is Instructional Day #42 of 84 for semester 1.
As we enter the final week before November Break, it is hard to believe that we are already past the halfway point of Semester 1. This milestone provides an opportunity for students, families, and staff to pause, reflect on the progress made so far, celebrate successes, and identify the small next steps that will continue to move learning forward.
This week also includes our Remembrance Services at each campus on Friday. We ask that all students and adults on site take part in this important moment of reflection and gratitude as we honour the courage, sacrifice, and service of those who have served our country. It is an opportunity for our school community to come together in respect, remembrance, and appreciation.
At Next Step, our Priority of Practice continues to focus on strengthening student engagement through meaningful learning, clear success criteria, strong relationships, and ongoing feedback. These practices help students understand where they are in their learning, what success looks like, and how to take the next step forward. They also reinforce our commitment to creating flexible, supportive, and individualized pathways that help every learner succeed.
The recent Alberta Education and Childcare Assurance Measure Results for Next Step Fall 2026 reflect the collective efforts of our students, families, and staff. Our results were rated Very High or Excellent across nearly every measure, including Student Learning Engagement (94.8%), Citizenship (92.8%), Education Quality (97.2%), Welcoming, Caring, Respectful, and Safe Learning Environments (95.9%), Access to Supports and Services (98.4%), and Parental Involvement (94.2%). Additional measures such as Safe and Caring (97.5%), Work Preparation (97.8%), and Lifelong Learning (96.7%) were also rated Very High or Excellent.
These results remind us that student success is about more than marks and credits. It is about building a learning community where students feel connected, supported, valued, and engaged in their learning. We are grateful for the partnership of our families, whose support plays an important role in helping students persevere and achieve their goals.
As we approach November Break, I encourage all students to finish this week with purpose, attend regularly, stay engaged in their learning, and take advantage of the supports available. Every lesson attended, every assignment completed, and every conversation about learning matters.
As we often say at Next Step, small steps are still progress. Thank you for being part of a school community that continues to demonstrate resilience, commitment, and care for one another.
"Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out." – Robert Collier
Have a wonderful week ahead, and thank you for your continued support of our students and school community.
With appreciation,
Mr. B. Spady, Principal
Ms. D. Bennett & Mr. R. Davies, Assistant Principals

Next Step Parent & Caregiver Survey Results
We are grateful for the time our families took to complete the 2025–26 EIPS Annual Parent & Caregiver Feedback Survey. This year’s results highlight many areas of strength that reflect the dedication of our staff, the resilience of our students, and the partnership we share with families.

These results speak to something we value deeply at Next Step: relationships, encouragement, and a commitment to meeting students where they are. As an alternative high school program, we know that success looks different for every learner. It is affirming to see that families recognize:
• The care and connection built by our staff
• The personalized support provided to students
• The commitment to helping students take meaningful steps forward
Small steps are still progress. We sincerely thank our families for their ongoing partnership and trust. Your feedback helps guide our School Education Plan and ensures we continue to focus on what matters most, supporting every student to succeed. Student Engagement Expectation
At Next Step, we believe that consistent engagement in learning is key to academic success. Students who do not actively participate in their course for a period of 30 days will be withdrawn from the course. Should a student wish to reengage, they will be required to meet with our Student Success team to discuss their commitment and develop a plan to ensure future success. As we say at Next Step, "small steps are still progress," and we are here to support every step of your journey. This policy ensures students remain committed to their learning, while also providing them with the necessary support to reengage effectively.
Use of Personal Communication Devices
Appropriate use of personal communication devices contributes to the safety and security of students and staff, minimizes risk to personal wellbeing and disruption to instruction, and protects personal privacy and academic integrity. Students may not access a PCD unless given permission by the teacher for a specific educational task or purpose. PCDs shall not be on the student unless the use is for: a diagnosed medical condition; or an identified inclusive-educational need.
Building Security and Door Locking
From a security perspective, the most important function of an exterior door is for protection from the elements and to control entry for building security. All exterior doors will be locked, and opened only for student and visitor access during designated school entry times and special events. Students who arrive when doors are locked, as well as parents/caregivers and visitors, will be welcomed into the office after ringing the doorbell/video-monitored intercom entry system.
