Scott Middle School's Motto- "We Enter to Learn and Leave to Achieve"
Schedules Are Now Available on Home Access
If you have not checked Home Access yet, please do. Students' schedules are available. If you need support logging in, please use the directions attached below.
This year, all electives were available for our students to take. The only choice was with Music. Students that play an instrument or participate in chorus, will go to that specific music, and all other students will participate in General Music with our new Music Teacher, Mr. Matt Quarles. This is an exciting change that allows all our students to experience Music in Middle School.
Another change made was to join Health and PE. We now have 3 teachers on our Health and PE team: Mrs. Michele Gehris, Mr. Ian Platt, and Ms. Katie Pieslak. The course they will be teaching is Wellness and Fitness. Students will spend time in the Gym and in the Health classroom throughout the schoolyear. They will work with all three teachers throughout the year.
If your student requires additional support classes such as executive functioning, social skills, or reading support with our reading specialist, you will notice that those classes are taken from electives.
Support for our Special Education students that receive ELA and/or Math Extensions has changed. Instead of this class also being taken from an elective, our Special Education teachers will be joining ELA and Math classes to support our students in their classes. If needed, they may pull students out for small group intervention in their classrooms.
First Days of School
With one week left before the first day of school, I am sure our new students (and some of our returning students) are starting to feel anxious. Please assure your student(s) that they will not need to know their schedule or how to get around our building. We will be focusing on meeting everyone, helping them feel welcome, and getting to know our building and expectations as a school community the first few days (and weeks) of school.
We do usually have our building open for "Sneak Peeks" in the summer, but construction has hampered that ability this year.
The first day of school 6th grade students will enter into our auditorium for an opening assembly before heading with their first period teacher to their "Homeroom." If your student knows their first period teacher, it will be helpful, but if they do not, we will have many staff members out front of the building with a list to help them. The rest of the first day will be spent with that group touring the building, learning expectations, and spending time in their classroom getting settled in.
Our 7th and 8th grade students will head to their 1st period class, but they will be staying there to get to know each other and review expectations. Mrs. Lamothe and Mr. Altland will also be speaking to the 7th and 8th grade in the auditorium during the morning as well to set the year off in the right direction.
I share this with you so you can assure your student they will not have to know their way around Scott or know their schedule on the first day of school.
Scott Middle School Schedule
Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
As the first day approaches, I want to make sure I outline our procedures for arrival and dismissal.
Arrival: Busses will begin to arrive at 7:10 and drop off students. Busses pull onto Olive Street and let students out in front of the school. Students will have the option to take a "Grab and Go" breakfast if they wish or head straight to advisory.
6th Grade Students will enter the door by the gym and head up to the third floor where their breakfast cart will be. Due to construction, this will not start until the door is available. Until then, 6th Grade Students will also enter the door by the auditorium and head up to the third floor.
7th Grade Students will enter the main door and use the stairs there to head up to the second floor. If they would like a breakfast, there will be a cart on the main first floor for them to stop at before heading up.
8th Grade Students will enter the door by the Auditorium and head to their first period (Which will be a Related Arts class). If they would like a breakfast, there will be a cart on the main first floor for them to stop at before heading on their way.
If you plan to drop your student off, you do not need to drop them off until 7:15. You will pull onto Olive Street and let your student out in front of the school. Please be aware of cars behind you and pull up as far as you can. Also, please do not pull around busses and cars. We want everyone to stay safe. Announcements start at 7:20, with our school day starting at 7:25.
Dismissal: At 2:08 our dismissal starts. We will begin by sending our walkers out the cafeteria doors at the back of our building onto Sterling Street. Then our Parent Pickup will be called to the cafeteria. We will be dismissing our Parent Pick Up students to Sterling Street this year. Mrs. Hamilton or Ms. Diehl will be on Sterling Street asking you who your student is. To speed up this process, we would love if you could write your student's first and last on a piece of paper that we will be able to read from your car. Please do not use Olive Street on your way to Sterling Street as we will be dismissing busses at the same time.
Our busses will be parked outside of the front of our school on Olive Street. We will be dismissing students by their busses. We call 2 busses at a time. Please remind your students to listen for their bus.
I appreciate your patience as we navigate through these procedures at the beginning of the school year. From experience, it does take a couple weeks to get things running smoothly.
Suggested School Supplies
As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we want to ensure that all students are equipped with the tools they need to succeed. Below is a recommended supply list for middle school students. It is also located on our website.
Please label your child’s items when possible, especially personal belongings. We encourage families to check supplies quarterly and restock as needed. If your family needs assistance with supplies, please reach out to our main office—we're here to help.
We look forward to a fantastic school year ahead!
Cell Phone Lockers Purchased to Support Our Expectation of "Off and Away"
As many of you know, our cell phone policy at Scott is “Off and Away.” In alignment with this policy, we’re excited to introduce cell phone lockers in our classrooms this year—an approach that has been successfully implemented at the Intermediate High School over the past two years.
These lockers will serve as a supportive tool to help students meet the expectation of keeping cell phones off and out of sight during the school day. There is extensive research highlighting the negative impact of cell phone use on student learning, and our goal is to ensure every student is positioned to achieve their full academic potential.
Here’s how it will work:
Each classroom will have a designated cell phone locker. Students will be expected to place their phones in the locker upon entering class and retrieve them as they leave. If a student chooses not to use the locker and is found using their phone during class, a detention will be assigned. Continued issues may result in more serious consequences, such as requiring the phone to be stored in the main office locker at the start of the day and picked up at dismissal.
Our leadership team is finalizing the specific procedures, which will be clearly communicated to students and families during the first few days of school. We wanted to share this information with you in advance so you can help your student prepare for this shift.
We understand that middle school students often believe they can use their phones during the day, but at Scott, we’re committed to the idea that “We enter to learn and leave to achieve.” Cell phones can be a significant distraction, and this system is one way we are setting our students up for success—both academically and socially.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to create an environment focused on learning and growth.
Summer Reading Assignment
Middle School students are expected to read a book over the summer. Students should read a novel and complete either the assignment for a fiction or nonfiction book, based on their selection. Many of the book selections are available through the MackinLibrary app which can found on their Clever pages of their school Chromebooks.
This summer assignment will count as a homework grade for their ELA classes in September. Their ELA teachers may provide a test and/or project connected to the summer reading. Any support you may offer your student in completing this task would be greatly appreciated.

Event Information
I would like to invite you to Scott Middle School’s annual Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, September 10th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. During Back-to-School Night, you will have the valuable opportunity to learn important information about your child's classroom experience and to meet your child's teachers.
Nurse's Corner
Donated gently used or new clothes, especially pants , would be greatly appreciated by the nurse.
Dear Families,
My name is Ann Keenan, I am the school nurse at Scott Middle School. As your child’s school nurse, I am responsible for the health needs of your child during the school day. Please let me know if there are any health concerns or accommodations needed for your student to access their education. Good communication is the best way to provide a safe and healthy school environment.
The Pennsylvania Health Department requires all 6th grade students to have a physical examination for school attendance. The physical should include a health history, immunizations, scoliosis screening, as well as the annual growth and vision screenings. Also, all 7th grade students require a dental form to be handed in.
Please visit your family doctor to complete your student’ physical, update immunizations and renew medication requests, if needed. All physicals should be submitted by the end of winter break. Any medication required in school must have proper paperwork completed and delivered to school by an adult. Students are not allowed to carry any medication without approval.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Take care.
Ann Keenan RN

** All medication must be in a labeled container from the store. All prescriptions must be in a labeled container from the pharmacy with the student’s name on and correct dose. (In the case of an inhaler, it must be in the box from the pharmacy or be accompanied by a doctor’s note.)
** All medication must have a note from the parent/ guardian
** Any changes in dosage need to be in writing. If it is a prescription medication, we must have a note from the doctor. (We can only give medication according to the store label or doctor’s orders.)
** All medication needs to be transported by an adult.
Additional Reminders:
All 6th grade students will require a Physical exam by their own health care provider by Winter Break
All 7th grade students will require a Dental exam by their own dental care provider by Winter Break.
Any 7th grade students without updated immunizations (Tdap and Meningitis) risk exclusion from school. Multiple notices were sent to students who are out of compliance for 7th grade attendance, the last mailed in June. There are approximately 80 students who need to submit proof of immunization.
If your student needs medication in school, please have their doctor complete the medication form and have an adult bring the medication to the school nurse.
