MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Hazeldale Parents and Guardians!
The first week of school was incredible! We visited many classrooms and answered students questions; from our favorite color to "Have you touched a jellyfish?". We saw lots of smiles and connections happening! Students shared about their summer break and their excitement about the learning that will happen this school year. Past students and older siblings also came to visit and shared how much they miss Hazeldale. Finally, we welcomed so many new to Hazeldale students!!!!! The new school year brings so much JOY!!!!!!!
Hazeldale staff spent time reviewing school wide and classroom expectations, developing and strengthening relationships, and creating community. We continue to brainstorm ideas on how to support our students as well as our community!
Next week, on Tuesday, September 9th, from 7:45-8:45am, we will host the first Coffee with the Principal. If you are available, we would like to see you and hear your ideas for the 25-26 school year!

PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY
In alignment with Governor Tina Kotek’s executive order, the district has made adjustments to the personal electronic device policy. All personal devices — including cell phones, earbuds, headphones and smartwatches — must be stored in backpacks during the school day, including restroom breaks and lunchtime. Students with IEPs or 504 plans that include device-related accommodations are exempt. If you need to get an urgent message to your child during the school day, please call the main office.
Please take a moment to review this policy with your child to ensure a smooth start to the school year.
SUICIDE PREVENTION INFORMATION NIGHT
Every BSD school will host an information night on suicide prevention for parents/guardians in September, which is National Suicide Prevention Month. These events will offer practical tools to help you support your child’s mental well-being. We encourage every parent/guardian to attend, regardless of your child's age.
Kinnaman and Hazeldale Elementary are partnering to better serve the community. Please, use this form to sign up if you are interested in attending our parents/guardians only night to learn more about suicide prevention tools. Hazeldale guardians can join the English only session at Kinnaman and Kinnaman Guardians can join the Spanish only session at Hazeldale. We have a limited number of spaces (35) that we can accommodate for each of this evening events. If we have more than 35, we will have a waitlist and try to offer another event at a later date.
To sign-up, please, complete this form.
TALENTED AND GIFTED SCREENING
As was announced at the end of last school year, the BSD is transitioning from using the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) to the Naglieri General Abilities Tests (NGATs). This decision aligns with the BSD’s commitment to meet the needs of all students as described in our strategic plan.
In October 2025, BSD 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will be screened for giftedness in their classrooms using one of three NGATs, unless families choose to request their children to be given the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT).
3rd grade students will take the Naglieri General Ability Test - Nonverbal.
4th grade students will take the Naglieri General Ability Test - Verbal
5th grade students will take the Naglieri General Ability Test - Quantitative
During this school year (2025-26), families who want to request that their student take the CogAT must complete this google form link. Requests must be submitted by September 22nd. Please remember, students cannot be tested with the CogAT in consecutive years, so if your child took the CogAT during the 2024-25 school year, they will not be allowed to take the CogAT again this year. As of the 2026-26 school year, the district will only use NGATs. If you request that your child be given the CogAT, they will not take the NGAT in their classroom.
If your student is on vacation or ill when their class takes the NGAT, we will have a make-up day for all tests missed at the school. If your student misses the make-up test, they will not be tested this year. Exceptions may be made for 5th graders upon the discretion of the District TAG Coordinator.
TOO SICK FOR SCHOOL
It's normal for children to get sick from time to time. But when should a parent keep a child home?
Below are some guidelines to help you make the decision about when to keep your child home from school. The recommendations are based on the guidelines provided by the Communicable Disease Program of the Washington County Department of Health and Human Services. They were developed to help prevent the spread of potentially contagious disease.
Home is the best place for a child who is ill. If your child is sick with a diagnosed communicable disease, please notify the school as soon as possible. This notification will greatly assist others who, due to medical reasons and/or treatments, have weakened immune systems and may require immediate and specialized care.

VOLUNTEER INFORMATION
We are excited to announce that our district is adopting the Raptor Safe mobile app as part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining visitor management in our schools. This app builds on our existing visitor procedures, offering a more convenient and secure check-in process for everyone.
What is the Raptor Safe App?
The Raptor Safe app offers a convenient and secure way for visitors to manage and verify their identity before arriving at a school. With the Raptor Passport feature, visitors can pre-verify their identity, allowing for a seamless sign-in process when they arrive on campus.
How Does It Work?
When visiting a school, visitors can use their secure QR code generated by the app to expedite the check-in process. QR codes automatically regenerate every 5 minutes to ensure security and prevent misuse.
Getting Started
The Raptor Safe app is available to all visitors across the district. To download the app, please visit https://raptortech.com/raptorsafe-app/.
For questions or assistance, please contact the school office. Thank you for helping us keep our schools safe.

SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL
Be Safe. Be Smart.
The new school year is the perfect time for students and families to start creating healthy (and safe!) habits. Safety is everyone’s responsibility! Here are some reminders when you are traveling in your neighborhood:
• Keep your eyes and ears open for traffic all around.
• Wear a helmet whenever you travel by bike, skateboard, scooter, or roller skates.
• If driving, slow down to 20 mph or less in school zones and neighborhood streets.
• Check for safety at all intersections and in bike lanes.
Remember to be alert and mindful of all road users (no texting!).
Don't Let Your Guard Down!
Our crossing guards work hard every day to help our children get to and from school safely. Whether on school property or in the community, if you see a crossing guard, please do what they are asking you to do. It takes all of us to keep the roads safe for everyone. Please be especially mindful in school zones, at intersections and crosswalks (marked and unmarked), near bike lanes and in neighborhoods. Thank you!
Thousands of school children make it home safely thanks to our BSD Crossing Guards.
Motorists please:
- Slow down when approaching a School Crossing Zone.
- Stop when the Crossing Guard holds out the yellow ‘School’ flag and enters the roadway.
- Proceed only when the Crossing Guard has reached the sidewalk and all pedestrians have exited the roadway.
HAZELDALE TEAM H.O.P.E UPDATES
Hello Hazeldale Hawks!
The new school year is in full swing and we’re getting ready for our biggest fundraiser of the year — Hustle for Hazeldale: Fun Run 2025! 🏃♀️💛
Mark your calendars for Friday, October 3rd.
You can set up a profile for your student at www.pledgestar.com/hazeldale. Please share their profile with friends and family and encourage them to donate. Every dollar goes back to Hazeldale for events, teacher funds, field trips (and buses!), grants, and so much more.
🏆 Prizes: All registered students get a Burgerville ice cream coupon🍦, with top fundraisers earning Hopscotch Tickets, Flip Museum Tickets, and the top student winning a $50 Kingpins Arcade card!
👕 Every student will receive a new T-Shirt and they will be distributed the day of the event.
👉 Important Reminder: Even spectators must complete the Raptor volunteer application. Please be sure to fill out this application if you plan to come and cheer on your Hawks! This is good for two years, so if you completed this last year, you do not have to register again.
Dining for Dollars: Our first Dining for Dollars event will be on Thursday, Sept. 15 at SHAKE SHACK on Cornelius Pass Road. See flyer for details.🍔
Bottle Drive: Save your bottles/cans and drop them in Hazeldale blue bags. All proceeds support Team HOPE. See flyer for more details! ♻️

Finally, join us for our first Community Meeting on Monday, Sept. 8 at 7:00 pm in the conference room by the cafeteria. We will also be holding an Orientation at 6:00 for all new Volunteers! RESOURCES
Birthday Invitations Information
Parents/Guardians should NOT bring treats, balloons, etc. to the classroom for a “birthday party.”
In addition:
1. Birthdays may be celebrated in the classroom through the reading of a child's favorite book or by creating cards, for example. This approach will allow for each student’s birthday to be recognized, maximizing instructional time, as well as limiting the sugary foods that are consumed when regularly celebrating birthdays in the classroom, avoiding allergic reactions and honoring the diversity among our students and families.
2. If your child wants to invite children from the class to a birthday party outside of school, the invitations should not be delivered to children at school unless the whole class is being invited. Please note that student phone and addresses are confidential and therefore cannot be provided by the teacher.
3. A great way to celebrate your child's special day is to send to school their favorite picture book to be shared aloud with the whole class. Make sure you let your student's teacher know about it.
Student Personal Belongings
Please, remember to label all your student's personal belongings as well as to send extra clothes in the backpack. Accidents can happen and the school doesn't have extra clothes to provide to all students. Thanks for understanding!
MEDICATION AT SCHOOL
If your student will need medications at school, prescription or over-the-counter, parents need to bring those to school and fill out a Medication Authorization Form. You can stop by our school office during Meet Your Teacher night with your medication and fill out the form. You can find more information on medication requirements on our district website:
