This week brought some extra heat, which meant a little less time outdoors than we would normally like. Even so, our students and staff made the most of their days together, finding plenty of ways to learn, play, and connect inside the building.

As we continue settling into the school year, our students are also becoming more familiar with our shared Be Safe, Be Kind language. We are seeing those simple words come to life as students learn classroom routines, practice caring for one another, and grow more comfortable as members of the Burbank community.

As we head into the Labor Day weekend, I want to thank all of our families for helping us get the year off to such a strong start. I hope the long weekend brings your family a chance to slow down, spend time together, and enjoy time with friends and loved ones. We look forward to welcoming everyone back next week!

Be Safe, Be Kind Be Safe, Be Kind

At Burbank, “Be Safe, Be Kind” is the shared language we use to help children understand expectations throughout the school day. Instead of giving students a long list of rules for every classroom and shared space, these two simple ideas provide a consistent foundation that can grow with them. They help children begin to understand how their choices affect themselves, their classmates, and the larger Burbank community.

Teachers bring this language into classroom routines, play, transitions, and problem solving in ways that are meaningful and appropriate for young children. Being safe might mean using materials carefully, keeping our bodies in control, or asking an adult for help. Being kind might mean including a friend, using caring words, helping clean up, or giving ourselves time to calm down. Our goal is to teach and model these skills, then recognize children as they begin putting them into practice.

We are excited to introduce this week's, Be Safe, Be Kind Ambassadors!

Gold Together: Coins for Cancer Spirit Week

We are excited to bring back our Third Annual Gold Together: Coins for Cancer Spirit Week from September 21 through September 25. This special week helps our Burbank community raise awareness and funds for pediatric cancer research in support of the Callahan Murphy Hare Foundation. Cal, one of our own Burbank students, has experienced childhood cancer and continues to inspire our community through his efforts to raise awareness and support this important cause.

Each day will feature a fun spirit theme and a different coin collection. Families are invited to participate by sending in pennies on Pajama Day, nickels on Sports Team Day, dimes on Hat Day, quarters on Silly Sock Day, and dollars on Gold and Yellow Day. The classroom that raises the most money will also earn a donut party!

Families can also continue supporting this important cause by joining the 5th Annual Kids in Capes 5K & Fun Run on Sunday, September 27 at 8:00 a.m. at Thompson Park. The event includes a 5K, one mile option, Kids Dash, face painting, bounce houses, crafts, games, treats, and more. Proceeds benefit pediatric cancer research through the Callahan Murphy Hare Foundation.

We hope everyone will join us for a fun and meaningful week as our Burbank community comes together to support Cal, his family, and children impacted by pediatric cancer.

We currently have a very long list of students without completed photo releases in PowerSchool. Without these permissions, our staff is limited in their ability to capture and share the wonderful things happening in classrooms each day. For returning families, these forms will need to be updated.

If you haven’t already, please take a moment to update your child’s Photo/Media Release in PowerSchool. Click here for step-by-step instructions.

Each week in the Friday Flyer, I’ll typically include a slideshow highlighting some of the great activities happening around the building. I’d love to be able to showcase as many of our students as possible, and completing the photo release helps make that possible!
