Cherokee Class has been doing some drawing. Kindergarten has started a Cherokee drawing notebook. They will draw the animal of the week each class and then combine them all together to form a book at the end of the year! We have done Owl (wah-hoo) and Dog (gee-thlee) so far. Mrs. Spivey has also been great in getting books for me to coordinate with my lessons! Thank you Mrs. Spivey for being so helpful!

We have been working very hard weekly preparing for the Cherokee Language Competition. Competition will be right before spring break. Students have been working hard on vocabulary including people, colors, numbers, food, and various items. Club has been engaging with flashcards, whiteboards, games, and competitions. Language bowl is our hardest competition so we are incredibly grateful for the work our students put into learning all of this material.

Native American Studies & Cherokee Native American Studies & Cherokee

MS/HS Cultural Education Website

Native American Studies

Native American Studies students had a very busy and productive first semester! Students learned an array of cultural topics including; How Cherokees lived in the beginning of time, Traditional customs, The Cherokee Phoenix, and have recently started learning about the Trail of Tears.

Cherokee

Cherokee language students have officially learned over 70 Cherokee symbols! Students can confidently read, write, and recognize 70+ syllabary symbols. What a huge accomplishment! Students have been working very hard to retain words and use them in meaningful ways. Recently, students have been re-learning Cherokee colors and had a coloring competition. Students colored a "January" coloring sheet, and identified the colors they used in the Cherokee language on the back of their coloring sheets. Our next learning target is to learn general foods, and to converse in class using general phrases.
