SHS Weekend Update
December 3, 2023
NEW BUSINESS
A Holly Jolly Time!
We hope that everyone is able to drop in to Beckett's Winery at Glasgow to celebrate the end of First Semester after dismissal on December 20. This is an adults-only, staff-only event. To make sure that we have enough snacks, please RSVP HERE by Monday, December 11.
Winter NWEA Information
NWEA testing starts next week - here's what you need to know. Mindy has updated the Administrative side of NWEA, so teachers are able to roster students. Test groups are the same. (Nick G. is our only new student, and he's been added to Eric Brayman.)
NWEA Schedule
Wednesday, December 6
3/4 hours: Growth: Math 6+
6/7 hours: Growth: Reading 6+
Friday, December 8
1/2 hours: Growth: Science 9-12 Life Science for use with NGSS 2013
5/6 hours: Growth: Language 2-12
SCCC students will test as they return from SCCC on Wednesday. They should be able to start their test and make decent progress. If they don't complete their test, they can finish it when we pull them to take their Science test the next week.
NWEA Groups
NWEA Testing Proctors are:
Eric Brayman: 9th Grade, Almendinger - Klasing
Rita Shaw: 9th Grade, Larson - Woodland
Rachel Bayne: 10th Grade, Abney - Mayeres
Hannah Key: 10th Grade, Owens - Wiseman
Teffany Sample: 11th Grade, Adams - Keller
Zach Crews: 11th Grade, Knox - Wolfe
Brenda Heilman: 12th Grade, Ball - Grimes
John Roberts: 12th Grade, Hunsaker - Zdybel
Leah Bowling: C. Johnson, R. Durham, Z. McClellan, B. Johnson
- Proctors, your students have been assigned to you (Thanks, Mindy!). You will roster them for the Winter Session in the GROWTH TESTS listed above. Let me know if you have questions or need help. Please do this as soon as possible so we can ensure that you have access to all of the kiddos in your group. You should have your Winter Goal Sheets from the Fall. These should be populated with the students' Fall scores as the Previous scores so that students can set their goals. I will put the Spring Sheets in your mailbox this week so students can populate them as they're completing Winter Scores. (A copy of the Goal Sheet was emailed to HS teachers on 11/30 if you need to print more.)
- I want to use NWEA's reports more this year. Please use this WINTER 2023-24 NWEA TESTING GROUPS SPREADSHEET to indicate which students met the incentive criteria and which ones did not. As a reminder, a student must fulfill at least three out of four of the following:
- Less than 2% rapid guessing
- RIT Growth (or no loss from the previous session)
- Attendance the day of the test
- No Disruptions or Outbursts
- If a student is absent, please indicate it on the spreadsheet during the testing session so we can schedule the makeup tests.

NWEA Incentive
The Winter Team (Rita, Eric B., Zach, Hannah B., Cindy) is finalizing the plans for the Winter Incentive, which will take place during the last week before break. They will share details as they're available so that we can let the kiddos know what they're striving for.
I also recently explained the HS FALL SCORES with HS students. I hope the information helps with their motivation as well.
Artisan Teacher Spotlight
As I come into your classroom to observe, you'll see that I'll often point out one of Rutherford's 23 Artisan Teaching Themes I've noticed you using. Throughout the school year, I will highlight various themes.
This week, I witnessed Rachel Bayne utilizing 'practice' . Mike Rutherford defines it as 'The ability of the teacher to improve recall and application of learning through effective rehearsal, repeated effort, drill, repetition, study, and review.' Rutherford's research tells us that practice at the cusp of mastery is an incredible tool for learning and retention. Rachel was using a combination of text resources, IXL, and oral review to ensure that students mastered the concepts in her class.
Great job, Mrs. Bayne!
The 411 on FTA
As we near break and things start to get crazy I wanted to remind everyone of a few things related to the FTA Assistants.
- If the assistant does not show up at the beginning of their scheduled hour, please call Mindy at 107 to report them absent.
- Should an assistant have assignments to complete--They have 2 options: They can go to the 3rd floor with Denise and do their work there (they should call you once they arrive there to let you know). OR They can work during their time in your classroom. Should this be a frequent occurrence, please let me know as we may need to look at a different placement.
- Just as we do with students in our classrooms, should they need to visit the office, counselor, or nurse please call in advance to see if they are available.
- They should be supervised at all times while working with students.
- PLEASE remember to be professional when in the presence of students. We should not be bashing the teaching profession, school, students, parents, etc. and please... watch your language. They should not be present during conversations regarding students, parents, etc.
- Try to have something for the FTA Assistants to do each day. That can be reading individually with students, making copies, grading, organizing papers, helping students on their work, decorating, participating in stations with students, working with a small group, etc. Just about anything to help you is fine.
Thank you so much for your support of this program and our kiddos!
If you have any questions or concerns related to the FTA Assistants please let me know,
Tonja
Cherubs will be Cherubs...
You're tired.
The students are tired.
The expectations still exist.
These include, but aren't limited to:
- A+, Dual Credit, and FTA students are to be following their schedule. If they are not where they are supposed to be, call Mindy at 107.
- Dual credit students have finals and final projects to complete. This should be done during dual credit hours in their schedule. D/C work doesn't come before your classroom work and assignments.
- Students on your roster need to be in your room, supervised by you. If extra kids show up, send them to the HS Office.
- We're working on some plans for the last week before break. Until the week of December 18, keep your foot on the gas.
Receipts Required
Make sure to turn in an itemized receipt any time you use your P-card.
You can take a picture and email it to Angela Lemmon at alemmon@slaterschools.net.
Hudl's Format Changes
Our streaming services with Hudl will no longer be going to the Slater School Streaming account on Youtube. All events will now be found on:
https://fan.hudl.com/usa/mo/slater/organization/14160/slater-high-school
This link has been added to our Youtube account's bio in order to send our fans to the appropriate location for games. Fans will also be able to download the "Hudl Fan" app on their smartphones, search Slater High School, and watch the game that way.
Tell Your Story
The December Board of Education meeting will take place on Tuesday, December 19 at 4:30 pm.
Each teacher/sponsor/coach is expected to enter a brief update for each of their courses/organizations by 3:00 pm on Monday, December 18.
Make sure you include your class numbers/enrollment in your report - shout out to Teffany Sample for doing so in November!
Field Trip Tasks
TRANSPORTATION
There is a new google form (button below) to request the use of a bus, fields are mandatory for us to schedule buses and drivers correctly. Our drivers wear many hats, and as the year gets busier we need to make sure we are scheduling correctly to avoid overlap or last minute scheduling.
FOOD SERVICES
Please make sure when your class is attending a field trip to fill out the google doc (below) for breakfast and lunch counts so the kitchen knows how many meals to prepare for. Please give the kitchen at least a week's notice.
What staff member deserves a shout out?
Take a minute to let me know all about it by filling out THIS FORM or clicking the banner above.
Students, Parents, and Staff can give a shout out to any Slater Schools employee! We'll make sure they receive a copy of it and will look for ways to share them with you throughout the year as well.
Let's get to bragging about all the good people around here!
OLD BUSINESS
Turning Up the Communication
(From Teffany Sample's 10/30/23 email)
Good Morning Wildcats,
The [HS] student council will make a weekly announcement on the first day of the week at 0830. If you would like to add anything to the announcement please have the subject, time, place etc. to me by 1200 on the Thursday prior. Nearly anything goes i.e. fundraiser money due, after/before school meetings, practice time change etc.... [This information should pertain to HS students.]
Once we have the student council email set up I will send that out as the contact email for future announcements.
Thank you for your support,
Slater STUCO
Blankets are for Beds
This was in the WILDCAT ROAR this week:
Starting Monday, blankets need to be left at home. They aren't to be brought to classrooms and especially banned from staircases.
If you're cold, wear more clothes. If you need more clothes or a coat, see Mrs. Crews.
--------
Students are aware. I talked to every kiddo I saw with a blanket on Friday. If you see a student with a blanket, tell them to put it away. If they need a coat or warmer clothes, please direct them to Lauren.
Tending to Attendance
Please do not let students in any door after the tardy bell rings. They need to be signed in at one of the offices. Once the bell rings, students are marked absent, which triggers an immediate message to the parent, which in turn generates an immediate call from parents to one of the offices. At that point students have to be tracked down and matched with teachers to clear up each student's tardy/absence status. This has been an ongoing problem that causes many unnecessary attendance issues.
Party Planning Committee
As we discussed in the August Building Level meeting, teacher teams will plan this year's NWEA incentive days. See the groups below.
Fall Group, chat among yourselves and let me know what you're thinking. There's a modest budget for each event. I would like to have the Fall date scheduled within a week and executed within a month.
Winter Group, please start planning your event as well - I think knowing what the incentive will be helps our kids lock in their motivation. I'd like to hold the Winter Incentive before we leave for Winter Break.
Transition Room Reminder
Don't forget to fill in the Transition Room Assignments document when you have a student in the Transition Room.
If you need access to the document, email Denise Audsley (daudsley@slaterschools.net) or call 222.
First Aid Supplies
If you need supplies for your fanny packs, please email Crystal Wiseman (cwiseman@slaterschools.net). Include what items you need in the message.
How Do I Enter A Discipline Referral? *UPDATED 9/18/23*
*I apologize for the change up, but Becky and I worked with Nicole to fix some settings in PowerSchool to be able to submit a referral through the INCIDENT option.
Here are the steps to enter a Referral:
- Go to the Student Information icon on the right hand side of your screen.
- Click on the last name of the student on the left side of your screen.
- Then go to the Select Screen dropdown on the top right of your screen.
- Select Submit Incident Entry.
- Enter the Incident Title (be sure to title it as Discipline Referral), date and time.
- Write your description in the Incident Detail section which should include details of the incident and where it happened.
- Submit. (It will say you have successfully submitted the incident.)
That's My Spot
Some of our HS Students are reporting being displaced by staff member vehicles. The cafeteria lot and spots north of the ECC doors are up for grabs for staff, students, and visitors.
Proper Protocol
The fanny packs in your rooms are for minor health care needs, ie. bandaids. If your pack is missing something please let the nurse know.
I have stopped several students wandering the halls on their phones who tell me they are heading to the nurse. I would suggest a hall pass that the nurse can sign off on noting the time they came and left. Way to much traffic in the halls during instruction time.
Dr. T
Being Intentional After Accidents
I have added a button at the bottom of this newsletter for both the student accident form and the Work Comp Form for your quick reference.
Visitors in the Building
Anyone who does not work for the District should be wearing a neon green lanyard while in the building.
We have some parents that are having a hard time dropping their babies off at the door and still wanting to walk them to their room and catching teachers off guard.
Please try to be outside of your classroom greeting students as they come in to help reduce some of these issues. Remember: If you see something, say something!
Thank you!
Expectations
The next dates are 10/24 & 10/25. Watch your email for more information.
Right Number, Wrong Person?

2023-24 Lunch Duty Schedule
Lunch Duties
Expectations for HS Lunch Duty (above) include:
Salad Bar Supplies: Extra salad bar supplies will be kept in an upright cooler in Whitney's 'area' to make it easier for that day's person to keep an eye on supplies and keep it stocked. These are the people who are posted at the salad bar until the line is through. Tasks include making sure kids are getting appropriate portions, not making messes (make them clean up after themselves), and that the stations are stocked. Whitney is entering codes and numbers. She won't be restocking any longer. Once the kids are through the line, staff members can/should move about the room to supervise and finish their meal.
'Outside Area': During the winter months and in inclement weather, this person will keep an eye on condiments until the kids are through the line. That station will move to the North wall as well. Spare ketchup will be stored in the cooler with salad bar items and ala carte drinks. Gravy/sauce may have to be retrieved from the kitchen. Once the kids are through the line, staff members can/should move about the room to supervise and finish their meal.
Hallway Supervision: These people will continue to supervise the hallway until the line has moved past the servers. At that point, staff members can/should move about the room to supervise and finish their meal.
Please be sure to include lunch duty details in your sub plans.
Thank you for everything you do all day every day - including the logistics of making a 28 minute lunch period work. I appreciate you!
