Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at OHS
Owensboro High School is proud to join schools across the nation in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15). This month gives us the opportunity to recognize and honor the history, culture, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans who have shaped our communities and our country.
At OHS, our diversity is one of our greatest strengths. During the week of September 29 – October 3, Owensboro Public Schools will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Week. Throughout this special week, students will engage in Advisory activities, cultural spotlights, and opportunities to explore music, food, art, and history. These experiences encourage our Red Devils to celebrate both their own heritage and the richness of cultures represented in our school.
We are excited to highlight the voices and stories of our Hispanic students and families, and we invite our entire school community to join us in this celebration. Check out the OHS Advisory Weekly Planner to see how our Red Devils are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Week!
Together, we can build understanding, show appreciation, and recognize the important role Hispanic heritage plays in creating a stronger, more connected OHS.
Sock-tober at OHS: Serving with Heart
Owensboro High School is proud to launch our October Purpose Project... Sock-tober! Throughout the month of October, our Red Devils will be collecting new socks for children, teens, women, and men to support local homeless shelters in Owensboro-Daviess County.
Why Socks?
Socks are one of the most requested yet least donated items at homeless shelters. Clean socks not only provide comfort and warmth but also help prevent serious health issues. For someone experiencing homelessness, something as simple as a fresh pair of socks can make a world of difference.
Homelessness in Our Community
On any given night, more than 100 individuals in Owensboro-Daviess County are experiencing homelessness. Families, children, single adults, and teens are all impacted. Local shelters such as the Daniel Pitino Shelter, St. Benedict’s Shelter, Oasis Women’s Shelter, and Boulware Mission work tirelessly to meet the needs of those most vulnerable. This October, OHS is stepping in to help!
How it Works
- Collection Dates: October 6 - October 31
- What to Donate: New socks of all sizes (kids, teens, women, men)
- Where to Donate: Students can drop donations in the House Collection Boxes in the front lobby.
- House Challenge: Every pair of socks donated equals House Points. The House with the highest total will receive bonus points!
Our Goal
Together, our goal is to collect 500+ pairs of socks for our community. Every donation, no matter how small, will help OHS students live out our theme: Lead with Purpose. Serve with Heart. Grow through Experience.
We invite parents, families, and community members to join us in Sock-tober. Donations may be sent with students or dropped off at the OHS front office. Let’s work together to keep our community warmer, one pair of socks at a time!
Jostens Senior Class Meeting
It’s time to start preparing for one of the most exciting milestones of high school - graduation!
On Wednesday, October 1, representatives from Jostens will be at Owensboro High School to meet with the Class of 2026. During this meeting, seniors will receive important information about everything Jostens has to offer in preparation for graduation. This includes senior products and keepsakes, graduation announcements, and caps and gowns for commencement.
Jostens will begin taking orders immediately following the meeting, with the order window open through Tuesday, October 7. Families can place orders conveniently online.
We encourage seniors and parents to review the information carefully and get orders in on time to ensure everything is ready for the big day. Graduation will be here before we know it. Let’s get ready to celebrate the Class of 2026!
End of 1st Quarter Grading Period: Friday, October 10
The first quarter grading period at OHS ends on Friday, October 10. As we approach this important milestone, we encourage families and students to stay on top of academic progress by checking grades regularly through the Infinite Campus (IC) Parent and Student Portal. Staying informed is the first step to success!
To support every Red Devil, weekly tutoring sessions are available at OHS. Students can sign up each week for the sessions they need, whether it’s extra help with a specific class or simply building stronger study habits. Tutoring is a great opportunity to stay on track and finish the grading period strong.
Parents, please take a moment to sit down with your student, review their IC grades together, and encourage them to take advantage of tutoring when needed. Together, we can ensure all of our Red Devils are reaching their full potential.
Check IC. Sign up for tutoring. Finish strong!
Digital Citizenship Week: October 20-24
At Owensboro High School, we are committed to preparing students not only for success in the classroom but also for responsible participation in our ever-growing digital world. During Digital Citizenship Week, October 20–24, our Red Devils will explore what it means to use technology safely, effectively, responsibly, and ethically.
Throughout the week, students will engage in Advisory lessons and school-wide activities focused on:
-
Online Safety & Security - protecting personal information and understanding digital footprints.
-
Smart & Respectful Communication - practicing kindness and empathy in digital spaces.
-
Balancing Technology & Life - developing healthy habits for screen time and social media use.
-
Media Literacy - learning how to evaluate information and identify misinformation.
-
Positive Digital Legacy - recognizing how today’s online actions can shape future opportunities.
Families are encouraged to join the conversation at home! Ask your student what they’re learning, and share your own experiences about using technology responsibly. Together, we can guide our Red Devils to be positive leaders online and offline.
Red Ribbon Week 2025: "Life Is A Puzzle, Solve It Drug Free."
Owensboro High School will join schools and communities across the nation in celebrating Red Ribbon Week, October 23–31. This year’s national theme is “Life Is A Puzzle, Solve It Drug Free.” The message reminds us that every decision we make is like a puzzle piece, and when we make healthy, drug-free choices, the pieces come together to create a strong and positive future.
Red Ribbon Week began in memory of DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who gave his life in the fight against drugs. Today, it stands as the nation’s largest and longest-running drug prevention campaign, uniting millions of students, parents, educators, and community leaders in a shared commitment to healthy, drug-free living.
Throughout the week, OHS will take part in activities, spirit days, and conversations that encourage students to reflect on their choices, strengthen their support systems, and pledge to live drug free. Families can join the movement by talking with students about the importance of safe, healthy lifestyles; modeling positive choices at home; and taking the Red Ribbon Week Adult Pledge, a promise to support youth in living healthy, drug-free lives.
Together, we can help our Red Devils connect the puzzle pieces of responsibility, resilience, and respect, and build a brighter, drug-free tomorrow!
