HSS Family Newsletter

HSS FamilyNewsletterFebruary 2, 2025
Hello HSS Families,

We have had three wonderful events since our last newsletter. On the 22nd, we held our school spelling bee. There were 21 students competing and they all did so well that we were worried that we might not have a winner before dismissal time. Mahima Singh won and she'll go on to compete in the NH regional spelling bee.

On Thursday we hosted the Mount Leb and Hanover Street 3rd and 4th grade concert in our gym. The students did an amazing job and everyone enjoyed the cookie reception afterwards.

And last, on Friday, we had a school wide Lunar New Year celebration. All of the students gathered in the gym and the 4th graders entered with a dragon parade. Then we listened to a story that explained the holiday and a beautiful scroll was presented to the school. We owe a thank you to the PTO's cultural celebration committee as well as to Josie and Jonathan Liao's family for the scroll.

What a wonderful way to start the Lunar New Year!

Leah Wheelan, Principal

Mahima was our Spelling Bee Champion! Nayra came in 2nd and Kalyani in 3rd

National Girls & Women in Sports Day is February 7th

The Upper Valley has countless opportunities for girls to participate in sporting events/teams. Did you know that children 6 - 17 years of age should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day? Why is it important that we promote physical activity? Participating in athletic activities promotes bone and muscle strength as well as overall better physical health. We also want girls to challenge themselves and compete to become strong, confident people! Check out websites for CCBA, The Lebanon Parks and Recreation Department, the many ski areas in our community or the different youth hockey leagues in NH or VT.

Flu Season Is At Its Worst

However, it is not too late to get your flu shot. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the number of flu cases will continue to remain high over the next couple of weeks. There are at home tests that can be used to determine if you have the flu, covid, or some other virus. Although there are medications that both adults and children can receive after the diagnosis of the flu to diminish symptoms, medical professionals recommend getting the flu shot for one’s best protection against getting sick.

Plum Blossoms Scroll that was Gifted to HSS

Here is the translation of the poem:

Plum Blossoms

A few plum branches by the corner wall,
Alone they bloom, defying winter's chill.
From afar, one knows it’s not the snow,
For a subtle fragrance drifts and fills.

梅花

墙角数枝梅,

凌寒独自开。
遥知不是雪,
为有暗香来。
