Sedalia Sustainability
August 2025
Welcome!
About Our Sustainability Program
At Sedalia Elementary, our sustainability program helps students learn how to care for themselves, each other, and the world around them. Whether we’re composting lunch scraps, tending to our garden, caring for our chickens, or exploring nature, students of all ages discover how their everyday choices matter. Our hands-on, outdoor-focused lessons inspire curiosity, responsibility, and a sense of connection to the place we call home.
August Happenings
Sustainability classes will begin the week of August 18th. During our first lessons, we’ll focus on learning or reviewing our recycling process, checking on the gardens, and visiting the chickens.
During the final week of August, students will participate in their first field investigation of the year. This is an outdoor observation walk where we’ll explore what’s changing in the world around us.
Eco Team News
The Eco Team is a student leadership group comprised of 4th–6th graders who help lead sustainability efforts at Sedalia. Team members take on weekly responsibilities including caring for the garden and chickens, managing classroom recycling, supporting energy-saving competitions, and helping with school-wide sustainability projects and special events.
Eco Team Leaders will be selected during the first week of school. Applications for students in grades 4–6 will be sent home the week of August 18th and are due by August 29th. Eco Team members will be announced during the first week of September.
This is a leadership role, and members are expected to stay in good standing with their teachers and follow through on their responsibilities in order to continue participating.
Volunteer Opportunities
We’re grateful for the amazing support of our Sedalia families! If you’re looking for a way to get involved, here are a few hands-on ways to help our sustainability efforts this season:
Chicken Whisperers
Help care for our beloved hens on weekends, holidays, and school breaks. Whether you’re experienced or just curious, we’d love to have you. We’re happy to walk you through the steps. Sign up through our Chicken Whisperer SignUp Genius or contact krankin@dcsdk12.org with any questions.
Compost and Coop Help
We’re looking for volunteers to:
-
Remove the old compost bins behind the chicken coop
-
Set up the new compost system
-
Transfer compost from the garden area
-
Install new roofs on the chicken coops before winter
Feed and Scratch Donations
While egg sales help support the chicken program, we would greatly appreciate donations of chicken layer feed pellets or scratch to help offset higher costs.
If you have any questions or would like to help, please contact krankin@dcsdk12.org. Thank you for supporting Sedalia’s sustainability work!
