Happy Summer!
Thank you all for a wonderful 2025/2026 school year. As we wrap up this year, we find ourselves incredibly grateful for such wonderful and kind families who entrust your children to us each day. We certainly do not take that responsibility lightly. Our students come each school day with a smile on their face ready to learn! We couldn't do it without you and your support. Wishing you a happy and joy filled summer. Please reach out to Ms. Houghan over the summer with any questions or just to say hello. We look forward to connecting a few times over the summer with some July and August updates. Otherwise, know that the office is generally open 8 - 2, with the exception of Fridays. If the office is closed, we will put a sign on the front door letting you know!
Have a sunny and bright summer!
~Mr. Brunner & Ms. Houghan
A Message from Mr. Brunner
I want to extend my deepest gratitude to all of you, the families of Sugar Creek, for entrusting your wonderful kids to my care, as their principal, each day. Through the hard times (moving schools, COVID, etc.) and the good (Fun Runs, Open Houses, seeing you in the drop off lane, etc.) I really tried to do my best, but as you can imagine at this moment I keep thinking of where I failed, the mistakes I made, and the things I left undone….
For many years, whenever someone asked how many kids I had, I answered with our enrollment number (and then added two more, for my own at home), because I thought so much of your kids, and how lucky I was to have them be a part of my life. In fact, some of the very best humans I have ever met were Sugar Creek students!
I have to share again how very sure I am that your school is in good hands with Ms. Houghan and the super staff we have assembled at Sugar Creek. Every year I get messages from all over, asking me about potential openings. The word is out about this school, and district. This staff is exactly what you want, educators who are dedicated to kids’ safety, well-being, education, social emotional development, communicating with their families, and just ready to have fun with them!
So, I’ll leave you with what were also my final words today to the school. I end the announcements every day with a joke, because I always liked kids to start their day with a smile. Here’s the one for today, June 11, 2026: “Did you hear the joke about the principal who loved all his kids and all his teachers, and then retired? It’s actually…not a joke. It’s true.”
Girls on the Run
Our Girls on the Run team had a great 5K race to wrap up the season. Huge thanks to our coaches for their support of the program. If you are interested in signing your daughter up for next season, you can find that information here.
Kindergarten Picnic
Thanks to Ms. Kyle and our Kindergarten teachers for putting on an amazing end of year picnic and sing-a-long.

Rain Dismissal
Yesterday’s dismissal was quite wild with some big weather and lots of extra cars around because of 5th grade promotion. As you may have seen in Dr. Clardy’s message, the district communication site was down yesterday, which made communicating about the shelter-in-place and dismissal plan quite difficult. Typically we would send out more frequent text message/email communications at a district level! That being said, yesterday teachers were holding students in the vestibules of the doors they typically dismiss from and when they saw a parent would send out the student. This helped keep us a little drier than standing out in the elements for a long period of time. Additionally, the district works closely with the National Weather Service, and Verona Police Dept to monitor weather. District officials then notify principals if there is no lightning in the area and we are safe to dismiss. We will continue to move forward with that plan for our pick up students, allow any walkers/bikers to stay until we feel it is safe for them to get home, and quickly get kids on to buses. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigated yesterday’s events.
Ice Cream Social
Huge thanks to the Meyer family for donating ice cream for our Ice Cream Social for Mr. Brunner. Students enjoyed eating ice cream on a super hot and humid day and getting to say a big goodbye to Mr. Brunner. Riley, Brooklyn, and Emmerson made this awesome banner that all kids got to sign.
