March 2026 Here's What's Happening!
Message from the CEO, Chesapeake Lighthouse Foundation
Dear CLF Families and Friends,
Greetings from all of us at Chesapeake Lighthouse Foundation. As we continue our advocacy for fair, sustainable public charter school funding, we also want to pause and celebrate the many wonderful things happening across our schools. Your children are thriving, our staff is extraordinary, and our community continues to show what is possible when high expectations meet strong support.
We are especially proud of Sir Dickens, a CMIT South Elementary student, who gave powerful testimony before the Maryland legislature in support of charter school facility funding. Moments like this remind us that advocacy is not abstract; it is about real students and real opportunities.
Across our campuses, students continue to shine academically and creatively. Our spelling bee competitors represented their schools with confidence and skill. Our student-athletes have had a strong season, earning recognition in flag football and basketball. At our STEM fairs, students earned numerous awards and recognition for innovation, research, and presentation. Our bridge-building teams are excelling, with students advancing to national-level competition. Our CSP robotics team continues to set the bar statewide and beyond, ranking number one in the state and region and placing among the top teams globally. These results reflect dedication, teamwork, and exceptional coaching.
Our schools are alive with community traditions and celebrations. Culture Fest brought families together in the best way, highlighting the diversity and pride across our community. Students also demonstrated excellence in the African American History contest, showcasing scholarship and creativity. We also want to thank our families and staff who made our Ramadan and Iftar gatherings so meaningful this year. They were a beautiful reminder of the community spirit that defines our schools.
Construction at CSP Middle School is on schedule and remains on track for completion in June, an exciting milestone for our students and families. We also celebrate CSP student Camille Lee, who is being featured as one of AACPS’s “Student Voices” for her science fair project, a wonderful recognition of student curiosity and achievement.
We are grateful for strong partnerships and supportive visits. PGCPS Superintendent Dr. Joseph is scheduled to attend the CMIT North Middle School All-Star Assembly, and Dr. Andorfol, our District One PGCPS BOE member, recently visited CMIT North Elementary, demonstrating continued engagement with the great work happening in our schools.
Thank you for the trust you place in our schools and for the support you provide every day. We are continuing our push for charter facilities funding. A bill is currently moving through the legislature, and we will need strong parent support to increase the proposed facilities amount to $800 per student. As we advocate, we will continue to celebrate the achievements that make our schools special, and the students and staff who make these successes possible.
With appreciation,
Yilmaz Zayn Ak, Ed.S.

CLF Schools Advocate for Facilities Funding
Students and leaders from across Maryland recently joined the Maryland Charter School Alliance to testify at the Maryland State House in Annapolis in support of equitable facilities funding for public charter schools.
The visit brought together students, educators, and board members to meet with lawmakers and share firsthand stories about how school facilities directly affect learning. A highlight of the day was testimony before the Maryland House Appropriations Committee, where student voice and community leadership took center stage.
Sir Dickens, a student from Chesapeake Math and IT Academy South Elementary, delivered a powerful and heartfelt speech describing what safe, well-funded learning spaces mean to students. His words reminded legislators that facilities are more than buildings; they are places where students discover who they are and who they can become.
Sir was joined by Claudia Chang, Board President of Chesapeake Science Point Public Charter School, who reinforced the importance of state support to ensure charter school students have access to learning environments that match their ambition and potential.
Their advocacy emphasized a simple but urgent message: all public schools deserve funding for safe, modern, and adequately funded facilities. HB1430 has passed through the House and will be in the Senate on April 1, 2026, at 1:25 pm in the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee Room. Dr. Andorful Visits CMIT NES During “Muffins with Moms/Matriarchs” Celebration
CMIT Elementary recently welcomed a special guest during one of its most cherished community events, “Muffins with Moms/Matriarchs.” Dr. Tiffani Andorful visited the school to engage with students, families, and staff while gaining a deeper understanding of the school’s culture, achievements, and needs.
The annual celebration brought together mothers, grandmothers, and other influential matriarchs for a morning of connection and appreciation. Amid the warm and festive atmosphere, Dr. Andorful had the opportunity to interact with families and witness firsthand the strong sense of community that defines CMIT Elementary.
During her visit, Dr. Andorful collaborated with key stakeholders, including Mr. Upson, CLF Parent Liaison, and engaged in meaningful conversations with staff and families about the school’s ongoing initiatives and areas of growth. She toured the campus, observing classroom instruction and student engagement, and took time to visit several classrooms where she saw innovative teaching practices and enthusiastic learners in action.
A highlight of the visit was Dr. Andorful’s meeting with the school’s principal, Dr. Tenika Fryson. Together, they discussed the school’s successes, challenges, and future goals. The conversation focused on identifying ways the school board can better support CMIT Elementary in meeting the needs of its students and staff. This collaborative dialogue underscored a shared commitment to continuous improvement and student success.
Dr. Andorful’s presence at such a meaningful community event underscored the importance of strong partnerships among schools, families, and district leadership. Her visit not only celebrated the vital role of matriarchs in students’ lives but also strengthened the connection between CMIT Elementary and the broader educational community.
CMIT Elementary looks forward to continued collaboration and support as it continues to build on its mission to provide a nurturing, high-quality learning environment for all students.
CMIT North Elementary In The News!
The Tigers are on an absolute tear this season, dominating the competition with an impressive 18–4 record and an average winning margin of 15 points per game. From buzzer-beaters to blowouts, this team has consistently proven it is built to win.
Led by Coach Black alongside Coaches Justin and Kai, the Tigers continue to build a winning culture rooted in hard work, accountability, and team success. Their hard work has paid off in a big way, earning them three championship titles this season, including victories in the IMPACT Youth Sports WINTERIAN Basketball League and the Cross Over Hoops Tournament. The Tigers continue to make their mark as one of the most exciting and successful teams around.
But the success doesn’t stop on the court. These student-athletes are just as strong in the classroom, with eight players holding a GPA of 3.7 or higher. The team also boasts Spelling Bee finalists and STEM Fair finalists, proving they are elite in both academics and athletics.
