Dear Lead Mentors and Mentors,

As April blooms around us, it's the perfect time to nurture the growth and well-being of our mentees. Each interaction we have is a chance to cultivate their confidence and celebrate their progress. Here are some guiding principles to infuse your mentoring moments with positivity and support:

  • Acknowledge Growth with Specificity: Take a moment to recognize the strides your mentees have made. Reflect on three specific things they're excelling at, whether it's captivating their students' attention, mastering classroom management techniques, or fostering a vibrant learning environment. Specific praise not only validates their efforts but also provides a clear roadmap for further development.

  • Strategize for Continuous Improvement: After celebrating achievements, it's essential to keep the momentum going. Collaborate with your mentees to identify their next growth area. Together, brainstorm strategies and action plans to tackle challenges effectively. Setting up modeling sessions, observations, and debriefs ensures continuous learning and development.

  • Prioritize Well-being: Knowing how busy April can be it's crucial to check in on your mentees' stress levels. Look for subtle signs of strain and offer support accordingly.

Consider incorporating stress-relief techniques into your mentoring sessions, such as scheduling walk-and-talk meetings. A casual stroll in the sunshine not only promotes physical wellness but also creates a relaxed environment for open dialogue and reflection.

Remember, as mentors we offer professional guidance and support, but we can also be a source of emotional support for our mentees. As nature blooms around us in the upcoming months, your work with new teachers can help them bloom too.

Elementary March Survive and Thrive focused on how the developmental characteristics of students directly impact their learning and how to leverage these strengths to increase student engagement. Integrating engaging strategies that meet the developmental strengths and needs of students helps maximize our students' social and emotional learning.

Consider sharing a brief overview with your mentees of the developmentally responsive SEL skills for their age group from the SEL Developmental Skills Continuum located in the SEL Stockpile.

Shout out to mentors Liquita James (LM at Newtown ES), Michelle Young (LM at Red Mill ES), Lauren Clarke (LM at Pembroke ES), Megan Petermann (mentor at Birdneck) and Mary Malone-Brown (mentor at Princess Anne ES) for attending the sessions with your mentees. When mentors invest in learning with their mentees, our mentees have a person for whom to debrief the learning and plan to experiment with new ideas generated during the session.

OPEC Instructional Coordinators and Specialists, Mary Maroney, Mary Telinde, Shannon Mackey, and Melanie Walsh, also attended these two sessions adding an extra layer of support for our special education teachers and teachers of inclusion classes. If you are looking for more supports for students with special education services, the OPEC Google site is a rich resource.
