Welcome Fall!

It was great to see so many families at our open house. Students and teachers were excited to make introductions and showcase the classrooms and work that we have been doing.

On Friday afternoon 27th September, classes participated in a community walk/run around the neighbourhood park to raise money for the Terry Fox foundation. Central public school raised over $7000 far exceeding our goal of $3500. Not only is this a great cause, but it was lovely to spend that time outside together in our beautiful community.

Thank you to Mr. Wood for organizing our Terry Fox event this year. A thank you to our wonderful school council who provided each student with an apple upon their return to the school after the event.

Our basement renovations is complete with the school gaining occupancy last week. We are busily trying to get it set up for functional use. We have prioritized the kitchen (used daily for Food Sharing preparation) and the special education/Empower rooms. We are working to re-shelve all the library books and get the library up and running. We are excited to see the space transformed and look forward to utilizing it further.

We observed National Truth and Reconciliation day on Monday, 30th September. Classes discussed our shared history and identities and looked to forge a path forward through reconciliation in our daily interactions. Over 80% of our student honoured the day by wearing orange.

It is hard to believe we are already headed into October!

Thank you for your continued support.

Yours in Education,

Mrs. Barrett & Mx. Allport

Ontario Health Curriculum

Promoting the healthy development of all students, as well as enabling all students to reach their full potential, is a priority for educators across Ontario. Students’ health and well-being contribute to their ability to learn in all disciplines, including health and physical education, and that learning in turn contributes to their overall well-being.

The updated Ontario Curriculum, Grades 1-8: Health and Physical Education, 2019 is designed to help all students reach their full potential through a program of learning that is coherent, relevant, and age appropriate.

Exemption policy: For students in Grades 1 - 8, the government has issued a Policy/Program Memorandum that requires school boards to develop a policy/procedure allowing caregivers to exempt their child from instruction of the Human Development and Sexual Health Education component of the elementary Health and Physical Education curriculum.

Caregivers are invited to learn more about the Human Development and Sexual Health Expectations by Grade. Should caregivers wish to exempt their student from this instruction, they are required to complete an exemption form for each elementary student for each school year as per Administrative Policy 325: Exemption From Human Development and Sexual Health Instruction, Grades 1 to 8.

Concussion Protocol

The Limestone District School Board is committed to helping all students succeed and lead safe, healthy, and active lives. As part of its commitment to student safety, injury prevention, and well-being, the Ministry of Education supports concussion awareness, prevention, identification, management, tracking, and training in schools through legislation, policy, and resources.

All school boards in Ontario are required to have a policy on concussion safety for students. These are outlined in Administrative Procedure 142: Concussions, as well as a variety of supporting resources and documents that outline a code of conduct for students and families, flow charts to identify and diagnose a concussion and assessment and management forms.

As a way to make sure students are not returning to play too soon after a head bump, we will be putting an orange wrist band on any student who exhibits possible signs or symptoms of a concussion (based on our concussion screening tool), and sending home paperwork for families to indicate when the child is able to return to learning and play (48 hours symptom free). At that point, we will remove the wristband, indicating that the child can return to normal activities.
