Lytton High School
Newsletter · Week 1 Term 2
Principal's Message
Contained within this newsletter are but a sample of stories from last term. It was a very unique term for everyone.
We hope that the term break has been kind to everyone, that we begin this term with fine weather and enthusiasm. Although it is a cliche it is nevertheless true, "every day matters". It is the amount of effort or learning over time that matters. Consistency is king. Therefore, as we start this term let us help each other with our young people. Let's get them to school, on time, every day, in correct uniform. Perhaps to start the day, they make their own bed, everyday! Perhaps at the end of each day we spend a few minutes away from electronic devices to ask our young people about their day. Perhaps ask them about the difficult moments, what would they do now, how did they resolve the matter, what are the learnings? Resilience is developed over time by deliberate examination of these moments and taking action.
Finally, please reach out to us if help is needed. It may be just a conversation, it may be more. Thank you, mauri ora.
Kia Ora Everyone,
We are Rhiannon Kapa and Kyle McVey and are proud to be your Head Prefects for 2022. It is a privilege to have these titles and lead alongside other leaders from our kura. We look forward to coming around LA’s and introducing ourselves once COVID allows us to do so.
The transition back into school this year has definitely been a challenge. Remote learning for seniors and mandatory mask wearing in class has been a learning experience for both students and teachers. Remote learning has meant that we have been able to learn from the comfort of our homes and hopefully make the most of our time. We’d like to give a massive thanks to all teachers who have continued to support us despite the challenges we’ve had to face. Learning from home has been difficult for some, but it has meant that during these tough times we have been able to keep our whanau safe which has been the biggest positive.
For those students who feel they need a little extra help, reach out to your teachers and let them know. Look after each other, and make the most of your time at school.
“Together to Excellence”
We would like to commend everyone for continuing to come to school even though it's been a hectic term full of many changes. The first few weeks of this term where we got to spend time with our juniors was definitely a highlight and all of us prefects are eager to be back in your classrooms. Hopefully we will have some sort of normality next term, as we and the other prefects can't wait to get events up and running for all of you.
Have a great two week holiday and kia haumaru / stay safe!
Prefect Camp to Mahia
At the start of the school year, the Prefects of 2022 traveled to Mahia where we completed many team building exercises, which included completing the Morere bush walk and a scavenger hunt around Mahia beach and up the hill. As a group we set up our tents, prepared food and spent time talking and sharing experiences. Spending time with our prefect group in a fun setting where we were able to bond, swimming out 1km with other prefects was part of the fun. During our camp we were able to show leadership and teamwork in an environment with our peers. Following this camps Lillie Mae and I were nominated and then awarded Deputy Head Girl and Boy for 2022.

Primary ITO Academy Year 11.
Our Year 11 Trades students have only made it on one trip during term 1. They headed off to Eastwood Hill to look at their propagation as the Year 11's are working on preparing and sowing outdoor beds. They have worked really hard on clearing and resowing their gardens.
Next trip for Year 11's will be drenching and drafting on a farm in Tiniroto.
Primary ITO Academy Year 12.
Year 12 students have been working on learning how to control weeds with the use of small machinery, this includes the care and maintenance of the machinery and wearing the correct PPE gear. Students will use the machinery throughout the year and complete assessments with photo's checklists and diaries. Year 12's will be taking part in ATV and chainsaw courses in Term Two.
EIT Trades Academy
These students are completing a year long program at EIT in Building, Computer Programming, Hospitality, Bakery, Services Preparation and Pikitoi.
Our students are at EIT every Friday getting a closer look at areas that they may be interested in pursuing after their secondary schooling.
Work experience @ Mangapapa Four square
Three Year 11 boys have taken the opportunity to do work experience with Bruce Allan at Mangapapa Four Square. The boys are learning valuable work ready skills while getting hands on experience in the butchery trade. We would like to take this time to thank our local community for making these opportunities a reality for our students, we couldn't do what we do without their support. To keep up to date with what's happening in the Careers/Pathways Dept please look for our private group on Facebook

Rongomaiwhiti - Angitu
During term 1 we opened a second classroom in Rongomaiwhiti. The class is a supported learning environment where our students engage in meaningful learning, interactions and experiences alongside their peers. The teacher Gaye DeLong and Teacher Aides actively respond to the strengths, interests, abilities and needs of each child, providing additional support and encouragement. The students access the curriculum as successful learners, the Teacher Aides encouraging them to expand their capabilities and extend their learning.
This term our akonga experienced new learning and challenges both in and out of the classroom, going from strength to strength in their confidence and capabilities. Experiences include cooking, literacy, numeracy, art, horse riding, swimming, horticulture and inquiry.

Year 13 Outdoor Education
It was a challenging yet exciting Term 1 for the Year 13 Outdoor Education class. While Covid-19 restrictions and the recent local State of Emergency have caused many postponements the class have managed to go surfing at Midway Beach and complete the first of 3 overnight tramps to the Koranga Forks Hut in the Waioeka Conservation Area. This tramp had it all from slips, waterfalls, swing bridges, fishing and to top it off freshly caught tuna. The group now prepares for their second tramp to Sandy Bay Hut at Lake Waikareiti during the final week of Term before tackling the 4 day Great Walk around Lake Waikaremoana in Term 2.

Eugene's Corner
The start of the year again proved to be a challenge sports wise as we tackled, bumped and side stepped COVID 19 ramifications as best we could. Our students were split in year groups, doing remote learning, with some teachers also unavoidably homebound because of close contacts etc. We managed to get some sports notices out to students chomping at the bit, wondering when this COVID 19 veil would lift so they could have fun being with their mates and play sports.
Rugby – We have some hearty souls instilled in these boys who have signed up to play rugby. Not enough to stand alone as Lytton, so we are amalgamating with Campion College and Nga Uri A Maui this year to form the ‘Turanganui-a-Kiwa’ team. Here’s hoping others will request to be added:
U18s – Ruka Leilua, Taeko Page, Killian Pellow, Te Mauri Matete, Mac Wallace, Aveer Amal Prasad, Dilair Te Purei-Singh, Mathew Nom
U15s – Achilles Kaui, Arnav Prasad, Lorchan Pellow, Marcus Tuwairua, Anaru Vertongen, Te Ohomauri White, Mahuta Reedy, Khan Welson, Joe Williams- Fonohema
Netball- It was hard work getting students committed. I know that students had only an x amount of schooling in the week that took priority, which is a good thing. Congratulations to the following girls selected for the Ritana Senior A: O’Shae Rangihaeata, Skye Swann, Te Riringa Babbington –Parata, Alex Campbell-Ratapu, Chalize Ngarimu, Oho Hailey, Hine Walker-Komene, Awhina Brown, Sapphire Hihi, Jayda-Shay Pomana, Shean Edwards, Jayda Maraki. Coach Miriata Callaghan Manager Lana Waitoa.
This year we have grown our mixed squad to two teams. Many thanks to Albeey Te Maari who has taken up the coaches’ role for the Mixed Teams. He has student lead help from Lillie Mae Valentine. Way to go.
Our Ritana Year 10 girls were the first to orgainise themselves, I would say within the first 2 – 3 days’ when signings opened up. It shows their earnest to play netball. They have more than enough signed, and new coach Sabrina Street will have a lovely time selecting from this enthusiastic group.
Also new to the coaching role is Teacher Carlize Harvey who has put her hand up this week to coach our Lytton Y9s. This lot look strong and sturdy and Coach has the pleasure of who to pick week in and week out. All the best.
Ki o Rahi – Played on Tuesdays after school. It was good to see all the schools geared up. The weather wasn’t kind and after a couple of postponements, we were ready to hit the field. Well, with COVID and its isolation hitting our Lytton team, Koka Beanie managed a new team week in week out, and was pleased with how well they coped. Ka mau te wehi.
Volleyball – Started off with a hiss and a roar Wednesdays after school, Lytton were well covered to host both the boys and girls’ games. Unfortunately, COVID struck players throughout the schools and so this intra school activity dwindled somewhat, and in the end we faced ourselves.
Squash – Have a ‘go’ at squash, was the inspiration of our Kandyce Bevan. This attracted a group of 9 girls to a Friday activity held at the Sun City Surf Squash Club. “It was fun”, “It was awesome”, ‘ I enjoyed that”, “I’m signing up”, “I didn’t know you are allowed to cross the red line” …. were some of the comments from the girls. Watch the notices for next term.
Basketball – Lytton Senior Boys have a full squad, competently led by Caleb Poole. I’ve seen some of the boys at practice and they have a nice balance, offensively and defensively. Young Tu Maurirere Tuwairua, his shimmies, dummies and explosiveness to the basket is exciting to watch. Lookout for new comer to ‘BBall’ at this level, Ruka Leilua, who gives 100 percent in all sports he plays. Then there’s Taz Gurau, who can play the role of a big man, in rebounds, Mr. Reliable when left alone near the basket. I could name others, but that will spoil things. They start Wednesday 6 May at GBHS.
The Senior Girls Basketball team has a mixture of girls capable of playing any other sports under the sun…. Netball, Ki o Rahi, Volleyball, Badminton, Rugby just to name a few. They ooze talent and on paper look the goods. We thank Melissa Mackey-Huriwai for accepting the role of coach this year. Their games commence Friday 8th May at the YMCA.
We have a Junior Boys Basketball Squad this year and I intend to register them in the second division of the GBA Secondary Schools Competition 2022. They are a hard case lot, showing glimpses of what they have learnt over the last few weeks of training. Just a matter of consistency, learning line upon line, precept upon precept week in week out. Anyway, it’s what makes basketball fun I suppose at this level, just having a go, no structure required, no help, no passing, no pick and rolls, just shooting and hope for the best. We start Friday 8th May at GBHS.
Hockey – Please register your interest with the Sports Coordinator, more likely to begin games close to the end of May.

Jismi Mathew
I am Jismi Mathew, I come from India; a country rich in culture, food and entertainment. I came to New Zealand as an International student of University of Waikato. I studied Master of Education in Adult Learning. I have a teaching degree from India, and I worked as a secondary teacher for 1 year in India. Teaching has been my passion since my childhood. I had an amazing science teacher in my intermediate time, his teaching has influenced me a lot.
New Zealand education system is entirely different from the Indian education system. New Zealand is offering a vast variety of subjects with practical aspects of the stream and in Senior level there are greater options to pass the levels in line with the cognitive abilities of children. This has greatly attracted me to enter into New Zealand secondary teaching.
I am really enjoying and proud to be part of the Lytton Family.
