Principal Message:

It is hard to believe that we have our first month of school under our belts. I have been struck most by the truly wonderful work of our students and staff. Staff have hit the ground running, and are focused on high achievement, focused learning time, and meeting the developmental needs of each student. Our students can be seen engaging in rigorous learning in a multitude of ways, enjoying play and connection with new friends and old, and being responsible school citizens.

While our staff have many goals, our primary building goal this year is to significantly increase reading achievement for our Hoover Scholars. In doing so, we are highly focused on the adult actions within our control that will yield our desired results. Some of those include:

  • Instructional teams identifying, implementing, and committing to the instructional practices that have the highest impact.
  • Ensuring a minimum of 2 hours of reading instruction daily.
  • Taking a deep dive into the new Minnesota reading standards and application of those standards in the current academic school year.
  • Systematically and intentionally being more prescriptive in our reading intervention practices.
  • Review of data at least every 6 weeks with the building reading specialist and monitoring classroom progress every 10 days.
  • Increase the number of interactive read alouds with students and include these across all content areas.

  • Engage in LETRS reading training for universal application of the evidence-based reading instruction.

While this is certainly our work as educators, some families may also be interested in how they might help support successful reading at home. I often direct parents to the Reading Rockets home page and invite them to peruse the Literacy at Home tab. If you are interested, the website is https://www.readingrockets.org/.

Should you have any questions about your child's reading development, please contact your child's teacher for the most up to date information.

World's Best Workforce Advisory Committee

Annually, we ask for a parent representative to join our World's Best Workforce Advisory Committee. The committee is made up of parent volunteers from each of your buildings. It also includes some Instructional Support staff as well as a few students. For information related to the committee, please visit the Minnesota Department of Education website for details (MDE link for more info). Here is this year's meeting schedule. If you are interested or want more information, please call the Hoover office at 507-382-5202.

Back Pack Food Program

In Minnesota, 1 in 8 children struggle with hunger and experience food insecurity. According to the USDA, food insecurity is defined as not having consistent access to nutritious food to live an active and healthy lifestyle (2018). The effects of hunger can be both short and long term, and it can present itself in various ways, including missing meals, skipping meals, having less to eat at meals, etc.

Hunger can affect anyone, but the devastating reality of food insecurity can be felt all throughout a student’s life. When kids in our community go to school, they are able to receive a nutritious breakfast and lunch, but what happens when school is out?

Here at FOCP, we believe that hunger should never be a barrier to success. Community funded and community led, the BackPack food program provides elementary school students with nutritious, well-balanced meals when school is out. Free food is distributed weekly in FOCP food packs (i.e. large freezer bags). With help from FOCP volunteers and staff, the food packs are discreetly delivered at the end of each week to the student's teacher. The packs are then placed into the student's backpack when they are out at recess or away from their lockers for them to take home for the weekend.

Student enrollment is open year-round. Students in grades K-5 are eligible for free meals from the BackPack Food Program. FOCP honors most allergies, dietary restrictions and culturally specific diets within our food packs.

If you need help enrolling, please confidentially contact our school social worker, Megan Schultz at MSchul5@isd77.org or call her at 507-832-9636.

Future Focused Facilities

A Vote to Strengthen Safety and Security Across MAPS

Schools need to be safe and welcoming places where students come to learn, grow and develop into happy and successful citizens.

Addressing the need for secured entrance improvements in ten of our school buildings is a significant part of the November 7th referendum. We invite you to view the 60 second video linked below that explains the safety and security needs across the district.

Schools handle a vast amount of sensitive data, including student records, financial information, and personal details. If approved, bond funding will also strengthen cybersecurity protections across the district.

The second community informational meeting will be held virtually on Wednesday at noon. Here is the Zoom link for anyone who is able to attend.

Referendum funding will directly impact the well-being and security of students, staff, and the entire school community. Learn more about the referendum at www.isd77.org/vote2023 and make your plan to vote on or before November 7, 2023

Referendum Phone Bank Sign-Up Referendum Phone Bank Sign-Up

As you know, this fall Mankato Area Public Schools is asking our community to vote on our Future Focused Schools Referendum. The vote will include two questions. The first question is focused on the safety and security of our schools as well as repurposing spaces for special education. Additionally, it seeks to address early childhood programming for MAPS. The second question is focused on East and West activity facility improvements.

Hoover Elementary will be hosting an informational phone bank on Monday, October 23, 2023 from 5:30-7:30. This is not a persuasive phone bank, but rather a script will be provided to shared the factual details of the referendum as well as a reminder to vote.

Below is a link for a Sign-Up Genius for our Hoover Phone Bank. If you are able to volunteer some of your time to connect with our Hoover families, it would be greatly appreciated. Dinner and snacks will be provided.

Bike and Walk to School Day

Bike and Walk to School Day this fall is Wednesday, Oct. 4th!

All Hoover students are encouraged to walk or ride their bike to school. However we understand this is not an option for all.

Bus Riders and Car Drop-offs: If a student rides the bus or gets dropped off, we will have a path set-up with cones on the playground for them. This way, they can participate in this event. They will follow the cones and walk this path.

Tickets: If a student walks or bikes to school, they will get a ticket. Bus riders and car drop-offs need to walk the path on the playground to be eligible for a ticket. This ticket will be entered into a raffle.
