Back to School

With school underway, we've recently had a number of field trips as well as our fall Walk and Bike to School Day. Despite a cold morning we had a large biking and walking group including students, parents, staff, and our local police.
I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the 2nd grade trip to the North Hartland Lake Pavillion. The adults were a bit worried because it was an overcast day with rain forecasted. We shouldn't have been. The students had a glorious time even in the rain. One group played a camouflage game that involved running and hiding in the woods. A second group went on a nature walk and saw all kinds of wondrous things like tiny frogs and bright red leaves and purple berries. The third group created fall art projects. The day wouldn't have been possible without the organization by the teachers and the amazing parent volunteers. It was a reminder to all of us of the happiness of children in nature.
Below is one of my favorite photos from the day because it exudes pure joy!

New Gaga Pit
We are so happy to announce that on Friday, our new gaga pit was installed on the playground. It is currently where the old structure was. It is easy to move and we will do that when the new structure is installed hopefully in the spring. Matt McGuigan, our PE teacher, will review the rules with each class as they have PE this coming week. Best of all, it can stay open in the winter!
During a break in our PD meetings today, Matt taught staff how to play (See photo below).
K-2nd School Sing - October 23rd
If you have a kindergartener, 1st, or 2nd grader in your family, you are invited to join us for the second school sing of the year. It will be on Friday, October 23rd, at 2:10.
Halloween Parade - October 29
You can send your child with a school appropriate costume in their backpack or in a bag. They will get dressed at school and then we will head out to the high school track and parade around. Parents are invited to watch.
NWEA Report in Alma
If your child took the NWEA math and reading assessment in the fall (Kindergarten students do not take it until the winter), we have uploaded the family reports into Alma. To access it, please log into your account in Alma, select your student, click on File Cabinet (see the photo below), click on Submissions, click on the NWEA folder, and open the report.
T.I.G.E.R. Visit
T.I.G.E.R. visited HSS this past Friday. Some students were asking about the links to their website and YouTube, please see them below.
Spirit Days
In addition to the two days listed below, students can always wear HSS spirit wear on Fridays.
News from the Nurse
Let’s talk about sleep . . . Why getting good sleep matters in school.
I recently read an article titled The Role of Sleep and Impact on Brain and Learning that was very interesting. We all know that sleep allows us to function at a basic level. Sleep heavily contributes to basic physiological functions in our body that help to regulate body temperatures, our immune systems, and our ability to regain health when sick. However, did you know that getting a healthy amount of sleep also improves cognitive tasks and memory?
This article examined several studies that concluded that sleep deprivation severely impacts learning, memory tasks, and executive function tasks. Overall, getting a good night’s both before and after learning can greatly improve learning outcomes. Although the concept of good sleep hygiene varies among ages, the article did emphasize that children are positively affected by getting plenty of sleep every night. What does that mean for elementary school children? According to The American Academy of Pediatrics, children 6 - 12 years of age should get 9 - 12 hours of sleep per night. If your child does fall asleep during the day, only allow him or her to sleep for a short time (about 15 minutes), and avoid overuse of screens.
Overall, it is important that elementary school children go to bed at the same time every night. Create a routine that is the same every night . . . bath time, brush teeth, read a book, sing a song, play quiet music, and snuggle up with a favorite stuffy.
Wishing sweet dreams for all!
