Message from Principal Sheryll Orbase
Dear Rose City Park Families,
Creating a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment for all students is one of our top priorities. At our school, we support this goal through the Caring School Community social-emotional learning (SEL) program, which helps students practice our core values of Be Kind, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible.
Students practice important skills such as listening, empathy, cooperation, and problem-solving throughout the school day. Our classrooms include daily routines that help students build strong relationships and a positive learning environment. One example is Morning Circle, where students begin the day by greeting one another, sharing ideas, and setting a positive tone for learning. At the end of the day, students participate in a Closing Circle, where they reflect on their learning and celebrate successes. These structures help students learn how to work through challenges, repair relationships when mistakes happen, and take responsibility for their actions.
Families play an important role in reinforcing these skills. Try asking your child:
What is something kind you did for someone at school today?
Did you help solve a problem in your class today? How did it go?
What was something interesting you shared or heard during circle today?
Simple conversations like these help children reflect on their experiences and continue building a caring community both at school and at home.
This week we are celebrating Kindness Spirit Week, a special opportunity for students to practice kindness, inclusion, and respect across our school community.
During our recent Early Release professional development, teachers also participated in training focused on building a caring classroom community. Teachers explored strategies for strengthening classroom relationships and supporting students’ social and emotional development. We appreciate Ms. Vicar’s leadership in helping our staff continue to build a positive and supportive learning environment for all students.
Staff Spotlight: Laura McVicar, School Climate Specialist
Q: What is your role at RCP?
A: I am the School Climate Specialist. My work helps ensure that students, families and staff feel safe, happy and welcome at school. I help students solve problems using Restorative Justice practices and encourage teachers to bring social emotional learning lessons into their classroom.
Q: How long have you worked at RCP?
A: This is my fifth year at RCP. Before I was asked to be our School Climate Specialist, I taught 2nd grade in Room 101.
Q: What do you like to do outside of school?
A: My favorite thing to do is travel to and explore far away places on our beautiful planet. When I’m home in Portland, I love taking long walks with Mr. McVicar and my two adorable dogs. I am a season ticket holder for the Portland Thorns and try to never miss a home game. PTFC! I also enjoy paddle boarding and camping with family and friends in my little vintage trailer.
Thank you for partnering with us in helping our students grow not only as learners, but also as caring members of our school community. By working together, we continue to support our shared core values of Be Kind, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible.
Have a wonderful, restful Spring Break and we will see you all back at school on March 30th!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS and UPDATES
WHAT'S NEW??
(📜👇SCROLL DOWN FOR OLIDES, BUT GOODIES!!)
New chain at Garden Entrance
Dear Families,
You may have noticed we have added a chain at the top of the stairs on the garden side entrance. This is to deter the general public from using our garden and playground areas as a place to exercise their dogs during school hours. The chain will be down for morning drop off and at the end of the school day. Thank you for your understanding!
⚽🏀🏓 PE 🏓🏀⚽
Beginning March 30, PE will be rolling! There is a bunch of helpful information below, PLUS volunteer opportunities!
Your student can bring their labeled helmet, bike, and/or scooter. Riding to school is encouraged!
Enter through the gym and park in the courtyard (it will be covered!)
On your PE day, you can park in the gym.
Labeled bikes, scooters, and helmets can stay at school or come home- up to families!
Grades K, 4, & 5 will use bikes. I have extras for those who can’t bring theirs. Sign up to volunteer here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080A4FA9A92FA4F85-49390820-bike#/
Kindergarten: Please leave all training wheels at home. I will remove them if you can’t take them off before we start. We use balance bikes instead of training wheels with the goal of pedaling at the end! I could use some volunteers that first week to help with helmet and bike fitting!
Grades 1, 2, & 3 will use scooters. I have extras for those who can’t bring one. If your student brings a bike, they can ride that or the scooter.
Students without personal helmets will be sharing school-provided helmets. Plastic shower caps will be provided by the school.
Fill out this form so your student has permission to leave campus: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdrRRajd0dY7iN44k1tQ1NGukBke2a8Rq1D9e0TFDvlc6cMAw/viewform
To help with the increase of bikes, we need volunteers to supervise AM intersections. Sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080A4FA9A92FA4F85-49390820-bike#/

TAG News
The application window for Single Subject Acceleration in Math (SSA-M) runs from March 1st through the 31st. This program is designed for exceptional cases in grades 2–4 in which students have already met all of the math standards for the following grade level, though they have not been exposed to them in school. This ensures an appropriate rate and level of learning for students whose needs cannot be met by the standard curriculum.
Beach recently saw a high number of students participate in the assessment compared to other schools in the district, with 8% of those tested demonstrating the proficiency needed to accelerate by one grade level in math. If you believe your child needs this advancement to address their current math level, checking in with your child’s teacher before applying is a great idea to discuss their current progress. Please be sure to submit an application during the upcoming window if you believe SSA is right for your child.
Schoolyard Depaving/Naturescaping Project
We are still moving ahead with Phase One of our schoolyard depaving/naturescaping project, which will remove 6,000 square feet of blacktop on the north end of the schoolyard. As part of the project, RCP students will learn about stormwater and watershed health, and get a chance to help with planting trees and native plants. We could not be more excited for this first, grant-funded project working toward our Schoolyard Vision. Special thanks to City of Portland's Percent for Green grants, our project lead Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership, and project partners DePave and Juncus Studio!
