From the Principal
Happy April, Grand Avenue Families!
It is wonderful to see the energy in the building as we head into the final stretch of the school year. We have a lot to celebrate and several important events on the horizon. Please take a moment to review the updates below:
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
State Assessment Updates
Our students have been working incredibly hard on the Forward Exam, Wisconsin's state assessment.
3rd Grade: Congratulations to our third graders for recently completing their testing sessions! We are so proud of their focus and effort.
4th & 5th Grade: Our fourth and fifth-grade students are currently in the thick of it and will be finishing up their assessments by next week. Keep up the great work, everyone!
Spring Field Trips
The next month is packed with hands-on learning opportunities! We have a variety of field trips planned for all grade levels to wrap up our curriculum units.
Note: Please be on the lookout for specific permission slips, schedules, and information coming directly from your student’s classroom teacher.
Attendance Matters
Student attendance remains a top priority at Grand Avenue as we strive for academic excellence.
Our Monthly Goal: 94.50%
March Results: We fell just a bit short last month with a final percentage of 93.25%.
Let's work together to finish the year strong! Being in class every day, on time, ensures your child doesn't miss out on vital instruction and social connections.
Upcoming Early Dismissal
Just a reminder that we have a scheduled Early Dismissal next Wednesday, April 15th. Students will be dismissed at 1:30 PM. Please ensure your family has transportation and childcare arrangements in place for the afternoon.
Thank you for all of your work and support. We greatly appreciate it.

Band
Band (for 4th Grade Families)
Attention all 4th grade parents/guardians. It is almost time to sign your child up for band for 5th grade! We welcome everyone into this program in 5th grade and hope your child will take advantage of this fun and enriching opportunity. During the month of April we will be talking to your child about band and introducing the specific band instruments they can choose from. We will also be trying the various mouthpieces with them to see which one/s are the best fit. The mouthpiece trials will happen at school in late April and shortly thereafter a letter will come home explaining options and a bit more about the program. At that point you will sign them up online and we will get you information about the next steps. Please check out the slideshow with more information about the program.

Band (for 5th Grade Families)
If your child is in 5th grade but not currently in band and has plans to be in band next year as a new 6th grade student please email Mr Williams (jeff.williams@saukprairieschools.org) to let him know and have your child let their homeroom teacher know as well. Interested students will be trying the band instruments out in late April and we will reach out after that with further instructions. Even if your child selected band and is technically “registered” with the school already, we need to know right away so we can meet with them in late April and help them get ready for the summer. We hope your child will consider this fun and enriching opportunity! Please reach out if you have questions. Please check out the slideshow with more information about the program.
Beginning Band Informational Slideshow
There is no reason to do anything special if your child already plays in band. Current students not new to the program just need to select band as one of their music choices for next year. All students can easily do both band and choir in 6th grade and both happen during the normal school day - there is nothing before regular school hours. If you have questions or concerns about that please do not hesitate to reach out.

Join us to hear more about the Fun Runs, Teacher Appreciation Week, and School Supply Kits - and find out how you can support our students and school community.
Counselor Connection
We are excited to focus on Courage this month! One way to think about Courage is “choosing what is helpful, right, and kind even when it is hard or scary.” Courage can look a little different for everyone. Get ready to explore as a family what Courage means to you! Courage is 1 of 3 traits, along with Responsibility and Perseverance, we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Strong. Across grade levels, students will be developing skills like focusing, organizing, and goal-setting.
Have some fun connecting as a family this month while practicing Courage. Here are 2 “PurposeFull Pursuits” you can complete together!
Remember that Courage is choosing what is helpful, right, and kind even when it is hard or scary. Reflect, think, and discuss things you would like to do, but find intimidating or scary (individually or as a family). Maybe it’s a new hobby, trying a new game, sharing your art or invention with others, or going on an adventure somewhere. Give 1 of these things a try together this month and take a selfie to capture the memory!
We have all demonstrated Courage in our lives. Stories are powerful tools for connecting as a family. Protect time this week to share stories about Courage with each other (you can use the story prompts to get started). At the end of the conversation, think of 1 way you can practice Courage this week.
Story Prompts:
● A time I (or someone else) showed Courage was _____.
● An act of Courage that changed/challenged me was ___.
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and we would like to give caretakers some alternatives to lashing out at a child physically or verbally. Adults can model ways to stay safe and be assertive too. The following is a list of twelve alternatives from the National Child Abuse Prevention website:
Twelve Alternatives to Lashing Out at A Child
The next time everyday pressures build up to the point where you feel like lashing out -- STOP!
Try any of these simple alternatives. You'll feel better... and so will the child.
• Take a deep breath... and another. Then remember you are the adult.
• Close your eyes and imagine you're hearing what your child is about to hear.
• Press your lips together and count to 10... or better yet, to 20.
• Put the child in a time-out chair. (Rule: one minute for each year of age; i.e. 3 min. for 3
yrs old)
• Put yourself in a time-out chair (walk away). Think about why you are angry: is it the
child, or is the child simply a convenient target for your anger?
• Phone a friend to vent.
• If someone can watch the child, go outside and take a walk.
• Take a hot bath or splash cold water on your face.
• Squeeze a pillow
• Turn on some music. Maybe even sing/dance along!
• Pick up a pencil and write down as many helpful words as you can think of.
• Call for prevention information: 1-800-CHILDREN

From our Nurse
We have had a few reported cases of lice since returning from spring break. Please take time this weekend to check your child's head for any evidence of lice. If you do find any live lice or nits, please treat immediately and inform the school as well.
It is always good practice to take time to comb through and check your child's head at least once a week.
For further information regarding lice, please click on the link below. Thank you!
Attendance Information
If you call your child in with an illness, we would like you to, please let us know the symptoms, i.e., a fever, sore throat, headache, cough, etc., that your child may have.
In addition, if your child usually rides the bus, please call Lamers to let them know if your child will not be riding the bus. They can be contacted at 608-460-7050.

Use the link below to access the form or pick up a form at the SPSD District Office (440 13th Street, Prairie du Sac, WI). Dismissal Changes
Temporary Dismissal Changes
To ensure the safety of students and allow for adjustments in bus routes, a parent/guardian must complete this form prior to their child riding a bus route that is different from the child's regular dismissal plan documented in Skyward.
The district strongly encourages all requests to be submitted prior to 11:00 AM on the day the change is needed. This form applies to all students in all grades (4K - Grade 12).

Drop-off & Pick-up
When dropping off or picking up students, please be sure to use the Grand Avenue main entrance doors that face Grand Avenue. Please do not use the parking lot as this is for busses and staff only. In addition, to improve the traffic flow, please pull up toward Marion Park instead of stopping directly in front of the main entrance. This will help prevent traffic issues at the stop signs. You can also drop your child off near the crossing guards who can assist with crossing the street. Additionally, please have your child exit the vehicle closest to the sidewalk rather than onto the street.
We appreciate your cooperation in helping keep everyone safe.
