Happy New Year!!!

As this school year has been an unprecedented one (to say the least), we will begin 2021 meeting the challenges before us with the same level of commitment and tenacity as we did in 2020. Due to recent spread and increased COVID-19 cases, we will be remote learning through February 1. We will know more in mid-January as to when/if students will be coming back to the school buildings. This will depend upon public health data and logistics that may limit our ability to bring all students back to school buildings safely. No matter where our students are learning, we will remain #AVALONSTRONG!
TAKE A DEEP BREATH
We made it through 2020!!!

WE CARE SO WE SHARE!

It's important to share data with you that demonstrates how our students are learning and growing throughout the school year. The data we're sharing with you below is from iReady in both reading & math. iReady is designed to help teachers determine your student's needs, personalize their learning, and monitor progress throughout the school year.

Please encourage your child to work on iReady independently each day! It's a great way for them to work at their pace to meet their learning goals.

TIPS FOR CONTINUED SUCCESS WITH ONLINE LEARNING

  • Create a space for learning with everything your child needs.
  • Display daily schedules on a white board, chalk board, or poster board. (Younger students: write the schedule for them. Older students: make them responsible for writing out their schedule.)

  • Remove distractions (Younger students: stay away from the television, games, etc. Older students: put phones and social media away.)
  • Time management (Younger students: use timers to help them know when to start/stop activities. Older students: teach them how to set alarms for every class period.)
  • Have a set routine that students follow during school days (go to bed early, wake up on time, eat breakfast, no work from bed, etc.)

  • Change of scenery: weather permitting, take learning outside every once in awhile. (Check with teacher!)

  • Recognizing a job well done: play their favorite game with them, take a walk to the park, stickers, etc.

Grade Level News

First Grade

Language Arts - We have been working on asking questions and describing characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details. We will continue to use these skills as we write our “All About______” essays on our favorite animals. We will also continue to work on phonics.

Math - We have been studying addition and subtraction. We will continue to work on subtraction word problems.

Social Studies - In Social Studies we have looked at maps, respecting the rights of others, our responsibilities in the Zoom classroom. We will look at families and how they have changed over time and how family roles differ from place to place.

Science - We are working on Motion and Material. We recently looked at how snow melts when exposed to heat and how it changes to a liquid. When the liquid is heated it evaporates and changes to steam or water vapor. We will continue to look at how materials can change. We will also study how objects can be moved in a variety of ways, such as straight, zigzag, circular and back and forth change.

In math, we are working on illustrating the problems and explaining our thinking. On this assignment, Hana was only supposed to illustrate the problem, but she went above and beyond and also explained her thinking. She did a great job on a skill I have not fully taught.

CAPA OFFERS CCS STUDENTS FREE TICKETS TO VIRTUAL CONCERTS AND PERFORMANCES

The show must go on! Even though this COVID crisis has cancelled most concerts and performances, our partners at the Columbus Association for Performing Arts (CAPA) are making sure Columbus City Schools students can still experience nationally-renowned shows… for free.

CAPA’s virtual Passport to Learning Student Matinee Series has two special programs coming soon: “Black Violin” in January and “Full STEAM Ahead with Mister C” in March. Because COVID-19 has limited the ability for students and families to visit theatres, CAPA created exciting new virtual content, and thanks to generous donors and sponsors, all of the content - including virtual tickets to these show’ are being provided free of charge.

The programs will feature interactive videos and a resource guide to help connect the performance to curriculum benchmarks and extend the experience with fun activities. All can be done from home or from a Learning Extension Center.

Flag of the Month - Nepal

"The national flag of Nepal is the world's only national flag that is non-quadrilateral in shape. The flag is a simplified combination of two single pennons, the vexillological word for a pennant. Its crimson red is the color of the rhododendron, the country's national flower. The blue border symbolizes the peace and harmony that has been prevalent in the country since the age of Gautama Buddha, who was born in Nepal. The crimson red is Nepal's national color, and it indicates the brave spirits of the Nepalese people. The two triangles symbolize the Himalaya Mountains and represent the two major religions, Hinduism and Buddhism. The red triangular flag has been a Hindu symbol of victory since the time of Ramayana and Mahabharata. The depiction of celestial bodies represents permanence, the hope that Nepal will last as long as the sun and the moon. The moon symbolizes that the Nepalese are soothing and calm, while the sun symbolizes fierce resolve. The moon also symbolizes the shades and the cool weather of the Himalayas, whereas the sun symbolizes the heat and the high temperature at the lower part of Nepal. Another interpretation: The flag's shape symbolizes a Nepalese pagoda. Putting a mirror at the side of the flag closest to the flagpole will generate an image of a pagoda."
