Shape your Future!

Positive mental health is vital to children's overall development. Shape Your Future, a program of the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET), is helping to support and protect young minds in observance of Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week, May 1-7.

One of the best and easiest ways to help children maintain good mental health is to ensure they get good rest. Getting a good night’s sleep minimizes stress, allows the mind to recharge and gives the body time to recover, which gives kids more energy to perform better physically and academically in school. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that children aged 6-17 get 8 to 12 hours of sleep each day. Students can even track their sleep to build and maintain a successful sleep routine.

The first week of May also coincides with Screen-Free Week (May 2-8), an annual invitation to play, explore and rediscover the joys of life beyond ad-supported screens. Too much screen time is associated with poor mental health for children and youth, including lower self-control, inattention, difficulty making friends, depression, anxiety and other behavioral issues. Recent studies suggest these problems have grown during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aside from schoolwork, encourage students to spend time away from their devices to be physically active instead.

Kids should engage in physical activity for at least 60 minutes each day, and adults 30. The benefits? Moving more helps boost your mood, strengthens your immune system and improves your sleep! Suggest that students take the soccer ball to a park or try calming yoga for some screen-free time. (And remind them to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water!) You’ll help your students build healthy habits that can improve their quality of life both inside and outside of the classroom.

Course selection GLITCH IS FIXED- Open until May 15th

Last week the students have started selecting their courses for next year. The student or parent may log in to their Wengage portal. Click on course requests. The main core classes for each grade level have been populated in already. If your student is in a different core class for any reason, please add that class to the course selection, if possible. Mrs. Harp will double check these when the schedules are done.

Students should pick their top 3-4 electives they would like. Rank them with #1 as the most wanted to #4 as, not so much. This does not mean they will be enrolled in those exact courses but Mrs. Harp will do the best she can.

Advocacy teachers are helping students in this process. Please talk to your student to verify they are completing this.
