Secondary Redesign - Redefining Education in Grades 6-12

Between May and July of 2023, MAPS gathered feedback from students, families, staff, and community members to guide future-focused planning. This fall, MAPS launched three new elementary focus schools at Rosa Parks for STEAM, Jefferson for Outdoor and Nature-Based, and Bridges for Global Studies. With these schools off to strong starts, the school district has now focused on redesigning middle and high school learning experiences.

Feedback from secondary students, families, staff, and community partners points to a need for more flexibility, hands-on and real-world learning, stronger collaboration, and individualized support. Families want experiences that reflect their students’ future interests, and staff emphasize innovation, partnerships, and stronger connections with the community.

Preparing students for their future remains central to the MAPS vision. National research shows that flexible learning, clear pathways, and real-world experiences build confidence and future-ready skills. Throughout 2024 and 2025, MAPS gathered additional input, and recent School Board discussions highlighted themes that include student voice, relevance, flexibility, strong staff support, and deeper partnerships with caregivers, employers, and community organizations.

This school year, MAPS staff including principals, directors, and teachers have visited, toured, and questioned practices in many settings as they continue to discern how to take our middle and high schools to the next level. What we know for sure is that one size fits all education needs to end. Our leaders are making strong progress in crafting plans that will be shared with the greater school community soon after the Winter break.

PTA Updates: Fundraiser, Book Fair Success & Recess Needs!

Fundraiser Progress
Thank you to everyone who has participated so far! Our One and Done fundraiser. We are truly appreciative of your support and we’re grateful for every donation. We’re pushing toward our next milestone, and your support helps fund field trips, classroom resources, and school-wide events. If you haven’t donated yet, there’s still time—every contribution truly makes a difference!

We are currently at 45% of our goal, and if we reach 50% , all DMMS middle schoolers will earn an assembly where they will watch their favorite teachers face off in an afternoon of fun. Also, each All-Ages Advisory teacher that raises the most will get a donut party and will help plan the assembly.

The current leaders are Mr. Smith in Group 1, Mr. Buttell in Group 2, and Mr. Schoeneberger! Other advisories are right on their heels, so please donate on or before December 23, 2025, at 5:00 when the competition ends. Check out the current standings!

Book Fair Success!
Huge thank-you to our volunteers, teachers, families, and students for making this year’s Book Fair a success! Because of your support, we raised funds that will go directly back into library and classroom literacy programs. We love seeing our students, and our Principal, excited about reading! See our Photos!

The DMMS PTA was able to purchase 9 new books for the library during the Fair. We also raised $66.77 in donations from families rounding up their purchase. Thanks for rounding up and for supporting kids and reading!

Recess Equipment Requests

Our recess bins are depleted and there are no more funds for equipment this year, and we’d love your help restocking! We are looking for donations of gently used or new:

  • Basketballs

  • Soccer balls or nets

  • Footballs

  • Jump ropes

  • Chalk

  • Frisbees

  • Other durable outdoor play items

If you have items or donations, please email the PTA at ptadmms@gmail.com. Thank you for helping make recess more fun for everyone!

Next PTA Meeting
Date: December 14, 2025
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Location: DMMS Middle School Media Center or Via Teams

We’ll be discussing fundraising progress, planning upcoming events, and reviewing teacher requests. There is even talk about getting a playground for the kiddos. Your ideas and participation are always welcome!

With Appreciation,

Meghan Maes

We believe cell phones/electronics devices can cause distractions to the educational environment and our students deserve to learn in a postive environment that is free from avoidable distractions.
