Francisco's Friday Roar

At Ashland High School, we believe that education is about both opportunity and choice. As students plan their courses and select classes that match their interests and goals, they are taking important steps toward their post‑secondary futures. Whether a student’s path leads to college, the workforce, or a combination of experiences, thoughtful planning and preparation help open doors.

Our diverse course offerings are designed to support students as they explore passions, build skills, and set goals that reflect their hopes and aspirations. These choices are more than just schedules; they are building blocks for life beyond high school.

We are committed to working closely with families and students to ensure everyone has the guidance, information, and support needed to make informed decisions. Together, we can help turn dreams into plans and plans into progress.

At Ashland High School, we are ready to partner with our community to make possible each student’s hopes, aspirations, and dreams—today and for the future.

Dr. Francisco L. Atanes

We would like to share with our parent community that our Dean, Sarah Weston, has decided to pursue a new career path and is no longer with our school. We are deeply grateful for Sarah’s years of dedication and support to both students and staff, and we wish her all the best as she embarks on this next chapter.

Moving forward, Assistant Principal Becca Laroi will be supporting and managing student life. Families may hear from Becca as she works to provide continuity and support for students during this transition. If you have questions or need support, please feel free to reach out to Becca at Becca.Laroi@ashland.k12.or.us.

Cell Phone Policy Reminders

Hello Families,

We wanted to send a brief reminder about our school’s cell phone expectations. We’ve seen more phones coming out during the school day, especially during passing periods, lunch, and other unstructured times, and we want to ensure we stay consistent with district policy.

As a reminder, Ashland School District’s updated electronic device policy requires that student cell phones and personal electronic devices remain off and put away from the moment students enter campus until they leave campus. This includes passing periods, breaks, and lunch. Devices may only be used if a staff member gives explicit permission or if an approved exception in the board policy applies. https://policy.osba.org/ashland/J/JFCEB%20D1.PDF

The goal of this policy is simple: more focus, more connection, and fewer distractions. While phones are part of daily life, we also know students learn and engage more fully when they are present with their peers and teachers.

If your student needs a locker to help keep their device stored during the school day, they can come to the main office to pick up a locker agreement form.

Thank you for your support in helping keep our learning environment focused and consistent for all students.

Cell Phone Use at AHS - Off and Away for the Day. Upon return from winter break, all electronic devices, smart watches, headphones & cell phones must be of and away for the day. You may keep them in your locker or backpack, not on your person.
zoom_out_map

Starting January 1, 2026, Ashland School District’s updated electronic device policy goes into effect. The goal is simple — more focus, more connection, and less distraction.

During class time, phones, earbuds, and smartwatches need to be off and put away. Students can use them before school and after school, students cannot use their devices during school hours, including lunch, breaks, passing periods- they must be turned off and put away from bell to bell.

We know phones are part of life, but we also know our students learn and connect best when they’re fully present. This update helps keep classrooms focused and encourages face-to-face interaction the good kind.

Thanks for your support as we continue to make AHS a place where students can thrive, stay engaged, and enjoy being part of this community. If your student needs a locker to help accommodate this change, please have them come to the main office to receive a locker agreement form.

Please use this link to view the official ASD board policy: https://policy.osba.org/ashland/search.asp?si=75853865&pid=r&nsb=1&n=0&_charset_=windows-1252&bcd=%F7&s=ashland&query=devices

Attendance Attendance

Attendance Matters: Missing a day of school here and there may not seem like much, but absences add up! When a student misses 2 days a month they will miss 20 days a year. They will miss 30 hours of math over the school year. They will miss 60 hours of reading & writing over the school year. They will miss over 1 year of school by graduation. When a student misses 4 days a month, they will miss 40 days a year. They will miss 60 hours of math over the school year. They will miss 120 hours of reading & writing over the school year. They will miss over 2 YEARS of school by graduation.

Please keep students with symptoms out of school: This list is school instructions, not medical advice. Please contact your health care provider with health concerns. This will include symptoms of illness, and when students may return. For a fever of 100.4 degrees or greater, students should be fever free for 24 hours without taking fever-reducing medicine. For a new cough illness, students should return after symptoms have improved for 24 hours (no cough or cough is well-controlled). For new difficulty breathing, students should come to school after symptoms have improved for 24 hours (breathing comfortably) - Urgent medical care may be needed. For Diarrhea (3 loose or watery stools in a day OR not able to control bowel movements) students should not come to school until symptoms have improved for 24 hours (no more than two bowel movements more than normal and no longer having accidents) with orders from doctor to school nurse. For vomiting (two or more episodes that are unexplained) students should be symptom free for 24 hours OR with orders from doctor to school nurse. For headache with stiff neck and fever, students should be symptom free OR with orders from doctor to school nurse. Follow fever instructions above - urgent medical care may be needed. For skin rash or open sores, students should be symptom free, which means the rash is gone OR sores are dry or can be completely covered by a bandage OR with orders from doctor to school nurse. If there are red eyes with colored drainage, students should wait until they are symptom free, which means redness and drainage are gone OR with orders from doctor to school nurse. If there is jaundice: new yellow color in eyes or skin, students should return after the school has orders from doctor or local public health authority to school nurse. If student is acting differently without a reason: unusually sleepy, grumpy, or confused, student should return after they are symptom free, which means return to normal behavior OR with orders from doctor to school nurse. If student has a major health event, like an illness lasting 2 or more weeks OR a hospital stay, OR health condition requires more care than school staff can safely provide, student should return after the school has orders from doctor to school nurse AND after measures are in place for the student's safety. Please work with school staff to address special health-care needs so the student may attend safely.

PARENTS - Please keep students with symptoms out of school!

This list is school instructions, not medical advice. Please contact your health care provider with health concerns. Each column depicts the symptoms of an illness and the length of time after which a student can return to school. This time will vary based on type of illness.

SBAC Testing SBAC Testing

A Reminder About SBAC Testing

SBAC testing is around the corner, and we here at AHS want to acknowledge why state testing is an important tool for not only educators, but for students as well.

Testing is a crucial aspect of learning because it enables students to showcase their knowledge and abilities. Regularly taking these kinds of tests can boost students' confidence and enhance their test-taking skills, which is a valuable asset for their continued education and success.

State assessments like the SBAC also offer valuable insights into student learning, aiding teachers and parents in enhancing instruction and supporting student achievement. Results play a vital role in pinpointing areas where students excel and areas where they need improvement. By addressing these learning needs promptly, teachers and parents can concentrate their efforts on providing targeted instruction to foster success.

This is also how we show the community and the world just what our students are able to do and how well we have done as a school to prepare them. We take pride in what we do and we want students to show pride in what they have learned by doing their best.

Students should strive to do their personal best on the SBAC. Education is a journey of growth and development, and it's through this process that students can set personal goals and take ownership of their learning and strive for continuous improvement.

AHS College & Career Center Spring Update!

The College & Career Center is located in the AHS Library. Students can get help exploring post high school education and career pathways by dropping in or reaching out to our AHS College & Career Specialist, Jen Marsden. She is available to help all students (and their families) explore post high school education and career options, and to assist in navigating the college admissions and financial aid process. Please reach out to her with questions or to schedule an appointment at jennifer.marsden@ashland.k12.or.us.

Interested students, especially juniors, and their families are strongly encouraged to attend this spring’s College & Career Pathways Information Sessions, learn about our ASPIRE program and check out the updated 2026-27 AHS College Handbook. Please see below for more info on these and other resources!

College & Career Pathways: Resources for Students and Families

This semester, seniors explored post high school pathways in their AHS College & Career Readiness (CCR) and AP Macroeconomics/CCR classes, where they received support on completing college and scholarship applications. Find more information about scholarships available to seniors below. Second semester, all juniors will be taking our new Future Foundations class, where they will be learning about personal financial literacy, as well as exploring career and college opportunities. Jen Marsden (AHS College & Career Specialist) and AHS Counselors and are also available to individually help students explore their interests, and to assist in navigating the college admissions and financial aid process.

Juniors and other interested students, and parents/guardians, are encouraged to attend upcoming College & Career Pathways Info Sessions which will begin again in March. Check out the AHS College & Career Center webpage, where you can find a list of upcoming college visits, information on the AHS ASPIRE mentoring program, and other resources. We welcome students and parents/guardians to reach out to jennifer.marsden@ashland.k12.or.us or their AHS Counselor with questions or to schedule an appointment regarding career and college planning.

AHS College & Career Pathways Information Sessions

Thursday, April 30: Financial Aid 101

5:30-6:30pm in the AHS Library

Learn about the pathways to access financial aid and scholarships! We will discuss the process for completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), which qualifies students to receive the Federal Pell Grant, Oregon Opportunity Grant (OOG), Oregon Promise Grant (OPG), and government loans. We will also cover the ORSAA (Oregon Student Aid Application) for students eligible for the OOG and OPG, who cannot complete the FAFSA, and the CSS Profile—an additional financial aid application required by some private colleges

AHS College Handbook: Check out the new 2026-27 AHS College Handbook, which includes information on how to find an educational pathway that’s a good fit, opportunities available at community colleges and four-year public/private universities, WUE schools, financial aid/scholarships, and many other useful resources. Hard copies of the updated handbook will be available soon in the College & Career Center.

ACT/SAT Info and Updates: Students applying to four-year colleges that require test scores usually take the ACT and/or SAT in spring of junior year and/or fall of senior year. The Oregon Public Universities no longer require test scores for admissions. Many colleges and universities are test optional. Check individual schools for current guidelines.

Students register for the ACT and SAT online. Upcoming testing dates: ACT (April 11, June 13, July 11), SAT (May 2, June 6, August 23).

Students who qualify for a fee waiver for the ACT/SAT, should reach out to karyn.barats@ashland.k12.or.us in the AHS Counseling Office for a voucher before registering for either test.

Many of our students do NOT have to pay to take the ACT/SAT, AP tests, and can also receive tuition waivers and scholarships for SOU dual credit courses. To qualify for these benefits this school year, students/families must complete and turn in the Oregon Family Income Survey to the AHS Main Office to demonstrate their eligibility. You can find a link to a fillable PDF of this form at the end of the GOG. Hard copies are also available in the AHS Main Office.

Below is a brief Family Income Survey we hope you will fill out if you see you qualify

Ashland School District qualifies as a USDA Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) site; this means all students in the Ashland School District have access to a free breakfast and lunch. AHS still wants to know which of our students would traditionally qualify for free and reduced lunch. We use this information to make sure we can direct resources to the students that need it most. The information is completely confidential and for administrative use only. Students who qualify are eligible for reduced fees for school events like our dances as well as reduced fees for AP Tests. Completed forms should be turned into the Main Office to the attention of the Bookkeeper.

What is the Meaning of the Pride Flag?

The Pride Flag, a symbol of this celebration, represents different aspects of the LGBTQ2SIA+ community. The colors of the flag hold significant meaning: red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, blue for harmony, and purple for spirit. We embrace the Pride Flag as a reminder of the beauty of diversity and the ongoing struggle for equality.
