Greetings HESD Families,
Today, on Patriot Day, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, honor the courage of the first responders and others who acted with extraordinary bravery, and recognize the many families and communities forever changed by that day. Like many people, I remember exactly where I was when I learned what was happening. I was getting ready for work as a kindergarten teacher while also getting my own children ready for the day. What began as an ordinary morning quickly became a day none of us would ever forget. Twenty-five years later, it remains important that we remember those we lost and reflect on the compassion, courage, and unity demonstrated in the days that followed.
This week, I enjoyed visiting classrooms at Bard and Hollywood Beach and seeing our students and staff engaged in learning. I also attended Back-to-School Nights at Haycox and Hathaway. Parkview’s event was held at the same time as Hathaway’s, so unfortunately, I was unable to attend both. Thank you to all of our staff members who prepared for these important evenings and to the families who came to meet teachers, visit classrooms, and learn more about the school year ahead.
Construction on the new transitional kindergarten classrooms and playground at Hollywood Beach also officially began this week. We recognize that construction is not convenient, and we greatly appreciate the patience and flexibility of students, staff, and families throughout the project. The District is working closely with the contractor to minimize noise and disruption during the school day, whenever possible.
Finally, as a reminder, there will be no school for students on Monday, September 14, while teachers and other staff participate in our first professional learning day of the year. Elementary teachers will focus primarily on strengthening instruction with our new math materials, while junior high teachers will participate in a variety of learning opportunities designed to support student achievement, engagement, and well-being. We look forward to welcoming students back to school on Tuesday.
