The Packing Problem: Plastic use exploration in room 308
Plastic use is extensive in the United States, especially in packaging, consumer products, and single‑use items such as bottles and bags. Americans generate large amounts of plastic waste each year, yet less than 10% of plastic is recycled nationwide. Many types of plastic are difficult or costly to recycle, and contamination in recycling bins often causes plastic to be discarded instead. Economic factors also play a role, as producing new plastic is often cheaper than recycling existing materials, leading most plastic waste to end up in landfills or incinerators.
Minnesota follows many national trends but has taken stronger steps to manage waste through long‑standing policies like the SCORE program, which emphasizes reducing, reusing, and recycling materials. While Minnesota recycles more overall waste than many states, plastic recycling rates remain low, with most plastic still going to landfills. Current efforts in the state focus on improving recycling systems, reducing single‑use plastics, and exploring extended producer responsibility laws that would require manufacturers to help manage plastic waste, aiming for a more sustainable system in the future.
In Room 308, we explored how this issue appears in our plastic consumption. Students examined their individual or family daily plastic use by collecting all plastic used during a 24‑hour period or by identifying common types of plastics found in their trash and recycling. The materials were then sorted and weighed into four categories: bottles; lids, straws, utensils, and clips; food packaging; and non‑food packaging. Students identified the types of plastic in each category using the Plastic Resin Identification Codes (1–7).
What did we discover? The majority of plastic collected was bottles (42%) and food‑related items (81.2%). When comparing food packaging and non‑food packaging, 52.1% of the items were materials that would go directly into the trash. While many families work extremely hard to reduce plastic use, most of us found small changes we could make to further reduce our consumption. What is your plastic use like? Try collecting your plastic for one day as a family and see how you compare to Room 308.
