Message from Dr. Antonelli
We are more than halfway into the school year! Next Monday, February 10th we will be celebrating the 100th day of school. February is a short but busy month. As a reminder Wednesday February 5th is a PD day for teachers and no school for students.
Students completed their Middle of the Year Diagnostic in Reading and Math. They did great! We are so proud of them. Each grade level on average scored with high growth and high achievement. This is just where we want to be. We will also be launching a new My Path Initiative. Each month students can earn a fun prize. Keep up the good work of completing 2 lessons in Math and 2 lessons in Reading each week. Please see below for information on results of the i-Ready Diagnostic and the new incentives.
Disney rehersals are going great. Students sound amazing. Student Crew for Disney will start after February break. Be on the lookout for all the other Afterschool Programs we are offering.
Studenta asked for it and we have it, SMENCILS! SMENCILS will be for sale for $1 on Fridays starting this Friday. Next week the 5th grade committee will be selling Valentine Grams at all three lunches. PE and Health students will be participating in Jump Rope for Hearts. There is a Scales and Slime event at Norwood School on Tuesday February 11th. See the information and sign-up below under Title I. The PTA meeting will be on Wednesday February 12th. We hope to see you there! We have two spirit days, Friday February 7th is Norwood Pride Day and the 14th is Valentine'sDay wear Red and/or Pink.
February break starts on Presidents Day February 17th. We are off all that week. We return on February 24th, which is the start of Reading Week. Be on the lookout for information on all the fun activities we have planned. Wednesday February 26th is Literacy NIght at Norwood School!
I have been asked to participate in Mentor Rhode Island's annual fundraiser, Dancing with the Stars of Mentoring. Please see below for more information and donate if you are able to! Thank you!
The RIDE Surveyworks is open. We ask that all families participate. To take the survey, visit bit.ly/ridefamily. Choose your school from the dropdown list, Norwood School (Warwick). If you don’t have access to the Internet, please contact Norwood Elementary School at 401-734-3525 to access the survey. Once you have completed the survey please fill out this quick google form. Every student's family that completes the form recognizing survey completion will be entered into a school-wide raffle for three different prizes including book bags, gift certificates and prize baskets. The first class to have 100% completion will receive a pizza party. Your participation and input is truly appreciated!

Playground Politics: How Kids Make Friends
Friendships are a cornerstone of childhood, but some kids have an easier time making friends than others. We talked to psychologist, author and friendship expert, Dr. Eileen Kennedy-Moore to learn how families can support their children in building and maintaining healthy relationships with their peers. Dr. Kennedy-Moore shares how friendships change and develop as children age and how parents can coach from the sidelines.
Healthy Habits Tip of the Month
Happy 2025! If you have little ones, the new year is a great time to give them a refresher on how to properly brush their teeth. Dentists recommend using a circular technique for brushing, making sure to only brush a small group of teeth at a time and gradually covering the entire mouth.

What is Chronic Absenteeism?
Chronic Absenteeism is a measure of how many students miss a defined number of school days for any reason. Rhode Island defines Chronic Absenteeism as the percentage of students who miss 10% or more school days during the year (or 2 days per month).
Research shows that chronic absenteeism is associated with a number of negative consequences for students, including lower achievement, disengagement from school, course failure, and increased risk of dropping out.
Early Dismissals
Please refrain from requesting an early dismissal for your child after 2:45pm. The dismissal process begins at 3:05pm and it becomes very difficult for us to fill an early dismissal request once the process begins.
Student Absences
Students will be marked absent, no matter the reason, if they are not in school.
If the absence is COVID related it will be entered as an excused absence.
STUDENT ABSENCE CALL-IN PROCEDURE
In accordance with Rhode Island State Law #16-19-10, Notification of Pupil Absence, the Warwick School Department requires that all parents/guardians call their child’s elementary school on the day that he/she will not be in attendance. We would like to receive all calls by 9:15 in the morning. If you are aware of a pending absence, feel free to call at any time prior to the day of the absence. In the event we do not hear from you, an automated call will be sent at 10:00 a.m. to inform you that your child did not arrive at school.
ASPEN Family Portal
It is important that the Aspen Family Portal is updated with correct address and contact information. Students can only be released to emergency contacts listed in the Family Portal so please make sure this is updated. You can find more information about the Family Portal on the district website here. Using the WPS Family Portal (PDF) WPS Family Portal (direct link)
