Language Arts
Mrs. Bruce
This upcoming week, we will only have one day of ELA due to Labor Day and Outdoor Education. We will continue our unit, “Relationships in Nature”. During our first reading of our new story, “This Fascinating World of Nature”, we will practice annotating the text and answering questions before, during, and after the text. In addition, we will review the Big Words Strategy by practicing reading and writing big words by identifying the base word, prefix(es), and suffix(es).
Outdoor Education - September 9th - 11th
Here is the Stone Canyon packing list: Student Packing List
The Stone Canyon Outdoor Education experience!
This immersive program, taking place Wednesday, 9/9/26 - Friday, 9/11/26, is a cornerstone of the transition to middle school and provides an invaluable opportunity for students to learn, grow, and bond outside the traditional classroom setting. At Stone Canyon, students will engage in a variety of hands-on activities designed to foster:
Teamwork and Collaboration: Through group challenges and shared experiences, students will learn the importance of working together to achieve common goals.
Environmental Awareness: Exploring the natural beauty of Stone Canyon will spark curiosity and deepen their understanding of the environment and our role in it.
Personal Growth and Resilience: Stepping outside their comfort zones with activities like zip line and archery will build confidence and problem-solving skills.
New Friendships and Community Building: Living and learning alongside their classmates and teachers creates lasting connections and strengthens our school community.
More detailed information about the Stone Canyon Outdoor Education experience, including packing lists will be coming out next week. Registration is live online here and HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO MONDAY AUGUST 31ST. Additionally, you will now see the payment for our trip in MySchoolBucks. If you believe your family may qualify for free and reduced lunch, please see Marie in the office to discuss payment options. Homeroom teachers also have more information on scholarship opportunities.
In the meantime, we encourage you to talk with your child about this exciting adventure and the possibilities it holds. It's a chance for them to embrace new challenges, discover their strengths, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Curious about the thrilling adventures awaiting at Stone Canyon? Dive into their website and discover all the excitement in store!
PLEASE TRY AND BE REGISTERED BY THIS WEEKEND AS WE NEED TO HAVE GROUPS AND BUNKS SENT TO OUTDOOR ED BY TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 1ST.
Math
Mrs. Suppi
We will continue our first math unit focused on statistics and data. Students will collect, organize, and interpret data using a variety of graphs and displays while learning how to analyze information and draw meaningful conclusions. Throughout the year, we'll continue to build strong problem-solving skills, embrace productive struggle, and recognize that mistakes are an important part of learning. We are also collecting some data of our own based on student chosen topics and choices. Each rotation got to select what topic and items based on that topic they wanted to add to our lists. It will be fun to graph and interpret our data within the next few weeks.
We can calculate the median and quartiles of a data set.
We can construct box blots and use IQR to measure variability of a data set.
We can interpret the median and IQR in a given context.
Science/Social Studies
Mr. Bodily
The week following Outdoor Ed we will be finishing up our discussions around what it means to be an active citizen and civic duties we can practice as members of a community.
You should expect our first test to come home graded on Tuesday September 8th!
Connecting questions to ask at home:
What are the three branches of government?
Why do we have three co-equal branches?
What is each branch responsible for?
What are checks and balances and why do we have them?
What are civic Duties and Responsibilities?
What does it mean to be a citizen?
Message from Mr. Halley
Mr. Halley would like to invite you to join the choir at Cherokee Trail Elementary. The choir program here at CTE is booming and last year it had over 80 members! All choir students get a choir shirt, the opportunity to perform the national anthem before a Colorado Rockies game-they get to be on the field at Coors Field for this! We also have two big concerts in the CTE gym for friends and family in the winter and spring semester.
The choir is open for students in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade and meets in the morning from 7:40-8:15 Tuesdays and Thursdays. You only need to attend one day a week but you can attend both if possible. You can find the dates for the rehearsals and performances for our winter semester HERE
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Mr. Halley ghalley@dcsdk12.org and thank you for supporting the arts here at Cherokee Trail Elementary.
