Principal's Message Principal's Message

Dear Hiteon Elementary Community,

February is shaping up to be an exciting and busy month at Hiteon! With author visits, alpaca sightings, SEL Night, the Science Fair kick-off, Bingo Night, OBOB Battles, and making Valentines for Senior Citizens, there’s no shortage of fun activities for everyone to enjoy!

Next Friday, we are thrilled to welcome local author (and former Hiteon parent) Carrie Tillotson for our annual Author Visit. We’re also excited, thanks to our PTC, to have real alpacas visiting Hiteon!

We hope to see everyone at our first-ever SEL Night this Thursday, February 13th, from 5:00 to 6:30 PM. This event is designed to be a relaxed, drop-in experience where families can enjoy some unplugged fun together anytime between 5:00 and 6:30.

Mark your calendars for Bingo Night on February 21st! Come in your pajamas for a cozy evening of fun. If you’re short on time for dinner, pizza will be available for purchase in the cafeteria. Bingo Night is a beloved tradition in the Hiteon community, and we hope to see you there!

As we enter the second half of the school year, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks for all the support you provide our students. Whether it’s reading with your child, volunteering, or ensuring regular school attendance, we deeply appreciate the partnership we have with our families and look forward to an exciting semester ahead!

Sincerely,

Janet Maza and Jenny Read-Emslie

Inclement Weather Information Inclement Weather Information

zoom_out_map

When we experience inclement weather, school schedules can be affected — either by a delayed start, early release or school cancellation. The district makes decisions based on the ability of:

  • The district to operate school buses safely.

  • Students and parents/guardians to drive safely.

  • Students to walk to schools or bus stops safely.

  • Staff to get to work safely.

Decisions are made for the entire district. However, we encourage families to make transportation and attendance decisions for their children based on their own assessment of travel conditions at their locations.

School delays or closures are typically communicated by 5:30 a.m. For the latest information:

  • Check the district website. A page pop-up will be posted if there’s a change in school operations. You also can find inclement weather protocols and snow routes online.

  • Look for a notification on ParentSquare.

  • Follow us on the district’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.

  • Tune into media outlets for updates.

Too Sick for School Guidelines Too Sick for School Guidelines

Sneezing, coughing, fevers and more are common at this time of the year. We are seeing lots of our students not feeling well and having to go home early because they just are not able to make it through the day. We hope everyone can stay healthy during the winter season and just want to remind you of the BSD gudelines for keeping students home if they are not feeling well. Below are posters with information for the common illness we see at school you can also visit the BSD website for more information

Our Hiteon & BSD Community Our Hiteon & BSD Community

Earlier this month, our school board adopted a resolution that affirms BSD’s support for all students and families regardless of national origin, citizenship or immigration documentation status. The resolution, as well as BSD’s stance on supporting immigrant and refugee students and families, is available on the district website.

Administrators received training on BSD’s internal processes and shared information with staff in early January. Office assistants will receive specific registration training in January and February.

I would encourage you to become familiar with our internal processes. They are not new but have now been curated through the lens of supporting our immigrant and refugee students and families.

These resources contain important and relevant information on the following:

  • Policies and regulations

  • External requests for information

  • Enrolling immigrant and refugee students

  • Resources for families

  • Community-based organizations supporting immigrant and refugee families

  • McKinney-Vento Program

  • Transcripts and credit by proficiency

Volunteer Background Check System Volunteer Background Check System

open_in_new zoom_out_map

If you haven’t done so already, please reapply to be a volunteer in the Beaverton School District. We’re implementing a new volunteer management system over the summer and need time to process and complete the criminal background checks for all applicants.

Start on the Volunteer webpage on the district website. The entire process — including the review of the Child Abuse Prevention & Reporting and Adult Sexual Misconduct training materials — should take less than 10 minutes to complete.

Thank you for prioritizing our students’ safety and for your willingness to volunteer in BSD.
