April 18, 2023 - School Board Meeting - Administration Building, 6:30 PM

On Friday March 31st (the last day of Music in our Schools month), the All-District band concert featured band members from 4th through 12th grade band. Each level performed by themselves, then came together to premier a commissioned piece written by Dr. Zachary Cairns from the University of Missouri. This combined number featured all 384 band members and was conducted by Dr. Cairns, along with Mrs. Yohn, Mr. Sheffer, and Mr. McCartney.

Hollie Carlson (Physical Education/Health teacher at NES) was selected as SHAPE PA- CDYA (Society of Health and Physical Education) Local Teacher of the Year. SHAPE PA - CDYA is the local chapter of SHAPE representing Cumberland, Dauphin, York and Adams county. Each year this organization selects a Teacher of the Year for Elementary physical education, MS PE, HS PE, Health, and an emerging leader. This is a volunteer run program dedicated to promoting and enhancing health and physical education programs. They provide leadership, advocacy and professional development to health and physical educators. Congratulations Hollie!

Students in Mr. Fryer's 3rd quarter flex period created a sleeping mat for the homeless out of plastic shopping bags. "Plarn," short for plastic yarn, is created from loops of plastic bags, which are then tied together and woven into a finished mat. The mat will be donated to Padre Pio Center in Philadelphia. Involved students were: Ava Ayers, Aida Garcia-Zuniga, Rachel Geiser, Timothy Gunning, Julia Kellison, Collin McDonald, Rylan Navratil, Kara Singer, Carly Stockenus, Betiel Tekeste, and Hailey Wildmann.

For those who wish to volunteer in our schools, the Volunteer Information Packet is located on the district website. All new volunteers must submit a TB test result obtained within 90 days or less of the volunteer application. TB test information including locations and cost may be found on the district website. Please allow adequate time for clearance processing! TB test results may take as long as 72 hours to obtain.

Already a volunteer and not sure if your clearances are up to date?? Check with the secretary at your child’s school or call/email Maureen Ross at the District Office at mross@northernyork.org, 717-432-8691, ext. 1104.

Your morning on the course makes funding of grants and scholarships possible! This year three scholarships will be awarded to 2023 seniors. Grants funded organizational items in many elementary classrooms, new furnishings in the FCS room, Learning Support experiences and technology, softball batting cage, travel expenses for Indoor Teams and the Polar Bears on Parade march composed for Northern with a visit from the composer! Spring grants are currently being reviewed. "Together We Make Good Things Happen"

The Polar Cares Closet collects gently used clothing and new cleaning supplies which are shared with students and families in need. The greatest needs are: underwear, socks, girls leggings, boys athletic pants, and detergent. Also needed are Giant or Weis brown paper bags. All donations can be dropped off in any of the Polar Cares bins located in the lobby of each school building.
