Happy September! Happy September!

At Farley, we believe that all children learn best in a safe, supportive, and respectful environment. Our approach to behavior is grounded in Responsive Classroom practices, where students are partners in understanding classroom rules and logical consequences.

Our goal is to ensure that every student feels secure, valued, and prepared for learning by following our core values: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Ready to Explain Your Brain.

How We Support Positive Behavior
We view behavioral incidents as vital learning opportunities. Instead of focusing solely on punishment, we employ restorative practices to help students reflect on their actions and successfully re-enter the learning environment. These strategies include:

  • Restorative Conversations: Guided discussions on the impact of actions and what is needed to make things right.
  • Restorative Reflection: Using "think sheets" to encourage personal accountability.
  • Restitution: Taking responsibility for repairing or replacing any damaged property.
  • Take-a-Break: A brief, supervised period for students to reset their focus before returning to classroom activities.

When Challenges Occur
While most behaviors are addressed within the classroom, Office Referrals are reserved for safety matters, significant disruptions, or chronic behavioral patterns. In these instances, families will be notified, and students will engage in a restorative conversation before resuming lessons.

After-School Detention
In cases where behavioral guidelines are disregarded, or if there is persistent, missed work, teachers or administration may issue an after-school detention (generally from 3:00–3:30 p.m.). If a detention is issued, parents/caregivers will be notified in advance so that you can arrange transportation home.

Partnering with Families
We seek your assistance and support in creating the best possible environment for your child. We encourage you to periodically review these behavioral expectations with your student to ensure we are all working together to maintain a comfortable and productive educational atmosphere.

Key Handbook Procedures

Important Reminders

Students need to be able to independently enter and exit the vehicle and fasten and unfasten their seat belts. If parents need to step out of the vehicle to buckle the student into or out of a car seat or hand them their belongings, you will need to legally park on the street and walk the student to the Packard street entrance.

Morning Drop-Off Times: 8:20 A.M. – 8:35 A.M.

  • Arrival Time: Drop-off begins at 8:20 A.M. Please do not drop off students (or allow walkers to arrive) before this time, as there is no adult supervision.
  • Parent Car Drop-off Traffic Flow:
    • Enter the access road at Packard Street and proceed one-way toward the gym.
    • Drop-off is a single, one-way lane. Stop near the basketball court and wait for staff direction.
    • Students must remain in the car until directed to exit by staff.
    • Do not pass stopped cars, get out of your vehicle, or park in the drop-off lane.
    • Proceed slowly, single file, behind the school to exit onto Cottage Street. Please yield to school buses.
  • Safety Reminders:
    • Dropping off is strictly prohibited in the bus lane, staff parking lot, preschool designated area, or on Packard Street.
    • The bus lane and drop-off/pick-up lane are for continuous traffic flow only.
  • Walking Students: If escorting a student into the school, please park in a visitor space in the staff lot and walk them to the front door.

Afternoon Pick-Up (Dismissal at 2:55 P.M.)

  • Signage: Please post your school-provided PPU (Parent Pick-Up) sign on the passenger window or windshield.
  • Parent Car Pickup Traffic Flow:
    • Enter the access road at Packard Street and proceed one-way to the back of the school.
    • Line up in a single, one-way line near the gym.
    • Staff will direct the pick-up. Do not call students to the car.
    • Exit single file onto Cottage Street, yielding to buses.
  • Routine Changes: If your student’s pickup routine changes or someone not on your PPU form is picking them up, please notify the school office by 12:00 P.M. via phone (978-567-6153) or a written note.
  • Late Pick-Up: Students remaining after cars have departed will be taken to the office, where a responsible party must sign them out.

Bicycle Procedures

  • Permission: Students 2nd through 3rd must have a note on file with the main office to ride bikes to school.
  • Arrival: Students may not arrive before 8:20 A.M.
  • Safety:
    • Bicycles must be walked on school grounds (to the assigned parking area at arrival, and to the main road at dismissal).
    • Helmets are required by Massachusetts law.
    • Bicycles must be locked to school-provided bike racks.
    • It is suggested that students use a basket or carrier to transport lunch boxes and papers.
