February 2025

The FACE ForumFebruary 2025

Hooray! It's FINALLY February! Was it just us or did January feel like it took three years to finally end?!

February brings forth some exciting opportunities for families and staff, as well as additional ways to celebrate kindness, love, and appreciation for all that everyone is doing to help make each school day a little bit sweeter! Thank you for everything you continue to do for our students, families and colleagues. The HEART you put in each and every day doesn't go unnoticed! We appreciate you and wish you a fantastic February ahead! (And in case you need something else to sweeten your day... just a few more weeks until February Break!)

Inside this month's FACE Forum newsletter, you'll find information on February workshops for families and staff, our spring upcoming events, food distributions, community resources for families, morale boosters, partnership highlights, and more! While our FACE Forum monthly newsletter is an internal newsletter intended to only be shared with district staff, you are welcome to take any applicable parts of the newsletter that may support families and add to your own site/classroom newsletters and family messaging.

Thanks for all the LOVE you show your students, families and each other! Have a wonderful February!

February Staff, Student & Family Morale Booster: Show the Love!

It's been a busy start to the New Year and we can't thank you all enough for everything that you've been doing to help keep your schools and departments going! With Kindness Day, Valentine's Day, and February break coming, it's the perfect month to show your colleagues, students, and families some extra love, appreciation, and encouragement for all they've been doing and continue to do each and every day.

In this month's envelope to school site office teams, you'll find our February Morale Booster to help you all Show the Love! The envelope has a stack of mini Appreciation & Motivation Cards that you can display on a table or with magnets on your staff room whiteboard (like Del Dayo has done in the picture below!) and encourage your team to take one to give to a fellow colleague to show some love!

To help show some love to students and families, inside the envelope you'll also find master copies of Positive Notes/ Thank You Notes that are great to send home with students, parents and volunteers. It's a great time to help thank them for all they're doing during.

And, of course, no February Morale Booster would be complete with some extra love from our FACE Team to all of you, in the form of CHOCOLATE (which has become a much-needed survival food for all of us lately)!

Black History Month & Beyond

February is Black History Month! Black history is American history, but Black History Month provides the important and necessary opportunity to amplify the voices, perspectives, experiences, and important contributions of Black Americans. Below are some resources we can all use-- both this month and beyond--to support students as they learn more, discover cultural impacts, and follow movements through to the present day. These resources emphasize engaging students' communities and lived experiences, including how we can incorporate local stories in lessons and move Black history from the margins to our everyday curriculum. For additional resources, ideas and supports, please reach out to Nicole Kukral and her amazing team in Professional Learning and Innovation, as well as Omar Field-Ridley and his fantastic team in the Equity department!

FACE Digital Resource Library

We know how challenging and time-consuming it is to search for resources for families, so our team has been building a Digital Resource Library for all sites and departments to have access to. In this library, you'll find flyers and links for district and community resources to assist with housing, clothing, food, health, special education, college and career, community service partners, and more. We'll be adding to this library regularly, so keep checking to see what's new! The link allows anyone in San Juan to view the resources, so please feel free to share the link with your site/ department team members!

Supporting undocumented students and their families: Resources and ICE protocols

In light of heightened interest regarding the rights of our students and school communities in the face of potential federal immigration enforcement, we have taken proactive steps to provide resources and support.

  • For Families: We’ve launched an external webpage featuring helpful resources, support tools and answers to frequently asked questions. This page can be shared directly with families to help them understand their rights and access assistance. The page can be accessed directly at www.sanjuan.edu/immigration.

  • For Staff: An internal intranet page offers additional resources, including a detailed protocol for addressing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions and inquiries at sites. Log in using your full district email and credentials to view the page.

As part of this protocol, school administrators are to report any inquiries or other activity by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials as soon as possible to Legal Services and Community Relations.

A one-page handout has been developed that includes protocols to follow should ICE activity occur on your campus. We also have a Serving All Students document that can be shared as a printed resource. Both can be found on our intranet page.

Please review these materials with your site staff and share the printed resources as needed. We encourage staff to check the intranet page regularly for updates as we continue to monitor the situation. Together, we can continue to uphold a safe and supportive environment for all members of our school community.

Volunteer Updates

Problem Resolution Tip of the Month: It's Okay to Say I'm Sorry

When trust is broken by an argument, or when an individual perceives they were wronged or harmed, an apology can be the most effective way to begin rebuilding trust. When we refuse to apologize, we are harming relationships, and if they are important relationships then an apology can have a much greater impact. The consequences of not giving an apology can be worse for the long-term relationship than the perceived advantage of keeping your own status intact. Remember, saying “I'm sorry this happened” or “I am sorry you are frustrated” is not an admission of guilt or wrong-doing. In fact, making an effective apology shows you are above your own ego and are a well-adjusted individual. Making an effective apology requires emotional intelligence – self awareness, empathy and awareness of others’ emotions. By becoming aware which thoughts and emotions feed negative behaviors, we can develop greater self insight into our triggers.

Thank You to the A's for Their Community Partnership!

Recess got a major league upgrade at Mariemont Elementary School last month when several players from the Athletics and fan-favorite mascot Stomper made a special visit! From taking over recess to signing autographs, the A's team created an experience the students and staff won’t ever forget! Huge thanks to the A's for their partnership and support for our schools!
