What We're Reading

I recently read 'Thornbird' by E. Kennedy, and it wasn’t until I was about halfway through that I realized E. Kennedy is actually Elle Kennedy, the author of the Off-Campus series—which I absolutely loved!
'Thornbird' is definitely a departure from her usual romance stories. This one is a YA mystery/thriller centered around seventeen-year-old Ryan, who is desperately trying to leave her past behind and start over.
After her grandmother passes away, Ryan is forced to move back to her old hometown to live with her aunt and uncle—the very same place where her father committed multiple murders.
Ryan just wants to make it through her senior year without drawing attention to herself, but that’s easier said than done. Everyone is curious about the new girl, especially because it’s been ten years since her father confessed to the crimes. As people start digging into her family’s past, Ryan finds herself uncovering secrets she never knew existed.
The more she learns, the more complicated everything becomes. She’s torn between getting involved and helping uncover the truth or keeping her distance to protect herself and everyone around her.
This was such a different read from what I expected from Elle Kennedy, and I really enjoyed seeing her tackle the mystery/thriller genre! If you’re a fan of YA thrillers, family secrets, and a story that keeps you questioning what really happened, 'Thornbird' is definitely one to check out.

Around 40 guests were treated to a special evening of music at the Vinton Palace Theatre last week as Todd Frank and Phil Thomas provided live music, historical anecdotes, and humor for our Vinton's Big Read program. Their original concert program, titled 'Songs of America: Music of Wars & Conflict,' featured songs dating back to the Revolutionary War up through Vietnam. Audience participation was encouraged as we sang 'This Land Is Your Land,' 'Good Night, Irene,' and 'Country Roads,' among others. Instruments included guitar, mandolin, and banjo.

Thank you, Todd and Phil, for sharing your talents with Vinton's Big Read, and for joining us in celebrating the arts and humanities in our community.
