Family Community Connection
May/June 2026
A word from our Principal
Hello Johnston/HAIS Families,
As we move into the final stretch of the school year, I want to thank you for your continued partnership and support. This time of year is always filled with celebrations, reflection, and excitement as we prepare for summer and honor the growth our students have made.
⭐ Recognized as a High Impact School!
I am incredibly proud to share that Johnston/HAIS has been officially recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) as a High Impact School!
This recognition reflects the hard work, dedication, and commitment of our staff, students, and families. Johnston continues to be a place where students are supported, challenged, and encouraged to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Thank you for being an essential part of this success!
School & PTO Event Expectations
As we enter a season full of school events, I want to provide an important reminder:
All Johnston/HAIS school and PTO-sponsored events are for our Johnston/HAIS school community only and are not open to the general public.
Additionally, during all school and PTO events, school-appropriate behaviors and safety expectations must be upheld. These expectations help ensure that all students and families can enjoy events in a safe, welcoming environment. Thank you for supporting us in maintaining a positive and respectful school community.
May 14 Hmong Day & Act 95
We are proud to honor and recognize the cultural and historical contributions of veterans and our Hmong community through our upcoming Hmong Day celebration. This event will also support the requirements of Wisconsin Act 95, which promotes education on the history, culture, and contributions of Hmong Americans and other groups who have served and supported our country.
If your family has a family member or friend who has served or is currently serving in the military, we would be honored to recognize them during our Hmong Day event. Families are invited to send a photo with their student that we may share as part of our celebration and recognition. Please send the photo with your child or bring it to the office before the event. We will have your student hold it up while we recognize our military families of Johnston/HAIS.
Thank you for helping us make this a meaningful experience for all students and families.

Looking Ahead: Celebrating Our 5th Graders
As we prepare to send off our 5th graders, I want to share how proud I am of this group. They have grown into strong, capable leaders, and I am confident they will continue to thrive in middle school. Saying goodbye won’t be easy, but we send them forward with pride and admiration.
We look forward to celebrating them at the 5th Grade Farewell on June 3rd from 5:30–7:30 PM.

Principal, Johnston/HAIS
Congratulations Johnston Elementary!
The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI), on behalf of Dr. Jill Underly, has selected Johnston Elementary School as a 2024–25 Wisconsin School of Recognition!
This honor is a direct reflection of the hard work, dedication, and commitment of our Johnston staff. Every day, the staff shows up for students with care, patience, and a belief that every child can grow and succeed. Their consistency, strong instruction, and unwavering support for students and families is what makes Johnston the exceptional school that it is.
DPI specifically highlighted Johnston's success in supporting all learners, particularly students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. This recognition speaks directly to the work we do daily; meeting students where they are, providing high expectations with high support, and creating an environment where students feel safe, valued, and challenged.
One way Johnston/HAIS will celebrate Wisconsin Act 95 is through our Hmong Day Celebration on May 14, 2026. This all-day learning experience will provide students with meaningful opportunities to engage in cultural learning while also honoring our nation’s history through recognition of United States military veterans.
Throughout the day, students will participate in a kick-off assembly, rotate through cultural learning stations, and attend an end-of-day assembly. As part of the celebration, Johnston/HAIS will highlight and honor veterans within our school community and recognize their service and contributions to our country. This event supports student learning by building cultural understanding, strengthening community connections, and providing an educational experience centered on civic respect, patriotism, and appreciation for those who have served.
This event will allow our students to participate in an organized school-wide learning experience focused on honoring military service and reflecting on our nation’s history.
We would like to honor all military families of Johnston/HAIS on this day. If you would kindly send a 5x7 photo of families or friends for us to recognize and to put the photo in our Johnston/HAIS Military Families showcase in our school, we would greatly appreciate it. Our intention is to keep these photos here so please just send us a copy. Thank you for your participation.

Immunizations: Is Your Child Up to Date?
Hello families,
As summer is approaching it is time to start thinking about scheduling your student’s well child visit and making sure they are up to date on vaccines. The Wisconsin Immunization Law requires that all students through grade 12 meet a minimum number of required immunizations prior to school attendance. These requirements can be waived only for health, religious or personal conviction reasons.
If your child does not have a primary care provider and you have insurance, you should call the number on the back of your card, and they can tell you who they cover for medical care. If you do not have insurance, 211Wisconsin connects you with thousands of nonprofit and government services in your area 24/7/365. You may also call “211” to speak with a representative. Other options include:
