Transportation Newsletter
August 13th, 2026
Bus schedules for eligible riders are available in our online routing portal. Please review the following information, then follow the instructions at the end of this message to access our routing portal.
Accessing Your Bus Schedule
- If you have already created a parent account in our EZRouting web portal, you may access it directly here: https://www.ezrouting.com/sdstpa
- If you are accessing the portal from a smartphone, you may need to collapse the “Student General Information” section by tapping on the gray section title bar.
- You do not need to check the boxes under "Submit Student Transportation Request." We do not use this feature of the software. Eligible riders will have bus schedules and may ride their assigned bus at any time regardless of the checkboxes in this section.
- Please note that in the “View Current Bus Schedules” section, you may need to advance the calendar to September to display transportation arrangements if your child's school does not begin until September.
- You may access instructions to create a parent account in the portal here: https://www.sdst.org/departments/transportation/accessing-bus-schedules
Bus Stop Change Requests
While those who are eligible to receive transportation are generally assigned to the nearest bus stop to their home, we do our best to accommodate requests for different or additional bus stops for children who live in multiple households, for childcare purposes, and to meet the unique preferences of families.
Bus stop change requests are honored only when we have space available on the bus route that services the bus stop, and are only available for existing bus stops.
So that we may effectively process all timely change requests, we are only able to accept change requests that have been entered by an authorized parent in PowerSchool by completing the Bus Stop Change Request Form.
Change requests must be submitted by Thursday, August 20 in order to be considered for the start of the school year. Requests submitted after that deadline will not be reviewed until September 14, and may take up to 5 additional days to be processed.
What to Know About Bus Stops
Students may ride only the bus they have been assigned and only to/from their assigned bus stop.
Children in kindergarten will be allowed off the bus only if a parent is at the bus stop. If you would like your child in kindergarten to be permitted off the bus with their sibling or alone, please contact us.
Bus stops designated at intersections are designed to service families that may come from any direction/street in the intersection. Students may wait at any corner of the intersection and traverse the intersection when the bus has arrived, the red warning lights are flashing, and the door is open.
Because of this, drivers are instructed to stop the bus at the point nearest the intersecting roadway without entering the intersection to provide the best visibility of the school bus to other traffic. Please do not ask the driver to move the stop or stop further from the intersection. Drivers are not authorized to change bus stops.
No matter your child’s age, discussing bus stop safety at least once yearly is a good idea. Safety tips to help with this conversation can be found at https://www.sdst.org/departments/transportation/bus-stop-safety.
If your stop is near private property, please be courteous to your community neighbors. Unless you have been invited, please do not allow your children onto lawns, into driveways, or otherwise enter private property. When sidewalks are available, children should wait on the public sidewalk for the bus.
Most transportation exception requests (split custody households, daycare stops, etc.) are reset yearly. If your assigned transportation does not reflect your family’s needs, please submit a Bus Stop Change Request in PowerSchool. Change requests must be received by Thursday, August 20. If you have questions or difficulties, please contact Transportation. Our contact information can be found at the bottom of this message.
What to Know About Scheduled Times
In the Morning
Students must be outside and visible at the bus stop five minutes before the scheduled pickup time. In most areas, it is unsafe to stop the bus (and other traffic) for extended periods.
School Stops in the Afternoon
The times in our routing portal are the designated arrival time for the bus to that stop. This time may appear for school stops before the school day ends. This generally means the bus will arrive early at the school but will wait until dismissal to load and depart.
Our estimated departure times for Springfield Township public schools are:
High School/Middle School: 2:55 pm (buses will load/unload only on the high school campus. Middle school students must use the tunnel between the two campuses)
First Elementary School: 3:30 pm
Second Elementary School: 3:40-3:45 pm
Non-Public Schools: 5-30 minutes following school dismissal (varies by school)
Home Stops in the Afternoon
The times in our routing portal are estimates, and can vary based on the number of students riding the bus, the amount of time it takes to load at schools, and other factors. We may arrive earlier than or later than the estimated time, but will do our best to be consistent whenever possible.
Early dismissals are not reflected in our routing portal. Public school buses will arrive at the bus stop approximately 3.5 hours earlier than regular dismissal days. Please contact us for questions about non-public school early dismissal times.
What to Teach Your Young Rider
Learning how to ride the school bus can be challenging for our youngest passengers. It is a good idea to teach your child:
- Always look for their known/trusted grown up before exiting the bus, and tell the driver if they can't see their grown up.
- The name of their bus stop so that they can recognize if the driver announces their stop.
- Always tell the driver if they're scared or not sure what to do, or if they think they missed their bus stop.
- The name of their school and what it looks like. Buses often stop at more than one school, which can create confusion about when to get off the bus.
After School Activities Transportation (Middle/High School Only)
Transportation is provided for high school and middle school students who attend Springfield Public Schools and have stayed on campus for academics, clubs, or sports. Students may not leave campus and return to ride a late bus home.
Students will be assigned to a "late bus" stop, which may be different than their regular morning/afternoon home-based stop, and will require walking further to get home from the bus stop. Late run bus stops will be available the week of August 24. Please plan to review with your child how to safely get home from their late bus stop before they plan to ride the late bus.
Late/activity buses will load/depart from the middle school cafeteria. High school students must use the tunnel to get on the bus. Departures will be at 4:00 pm and 4:45 pm. All students must sign in on the bus, and may ride only to their assigned stop.
Creating & Maintaining a Safe Environment on the Bus
Student Expectations
To maintain a safe and disciplined transportation environment, drivers may assign seats to students. All passengers are expected to stay seated properly at all times while on the bus, to speak at the same volume that is appropriate inside the school, and to be respectful of their peers and the driver.
Maintaining a Safe Bus
School bus drivers will always do their best to help students make safe and appropriate behavioral choices. However, they aren't able to see or hear every interaction that takes place between students.
If your child reports incidents of negative interactions with others, please reach out to their building principals and/or the transportation department. We will work as a team to investigate incidents and assign consequences, where appropriate.
Do not attempt to board your child's school bus. Unauthorized school bus entry is a third degree misdemeanor in Pennsylvania. Any instance of unauthorized adults boarding the school bus will be reported to our Supervisor of Campus Safety & Operations, who will consult with law enforcement as needed.
Video/Audio Recording
The school buses and vehicles used to transport our students may be equipped with video and audio recording equipment. School officials may review recorded media for disciplinary and security-related purposes, provide it to law enforcement or a court of law, or use it in school disciplinary proceedings. Students, staff, and chaperones/volunteers should understand that their actions and words may be recorded while they are on school buses or school vehicles and that they should have no expectation of privacy during that time.
When Traffic Must Stop for the School Bus
The law requires all drivers to be prepared to stop when the school bus’s amber warning lights are flashing and to stop at least 10 feet before reaching the bus when the red warning lights are flashing. Drivers approaching an intersection at which a school bus is stopped must also stop at the intersection until the red warning lights are turned off. For more information, see PennDOT's School Bus Stopping Law Fact Sheet.
When in doubt, STOP!
