Greetings Longfellow Families,

Thank you to the staff, students and families that were able to join us for the National Alliance on Mental Illness Walk (NAMI) this past weekend! It was a nice event and it felt good to support such an important cause. We are definitely planning to participate again next year. Please be on the look out for future events as we grow our partnership with NAMI. Staff also participated in our first ALL staff spirit day of the year! Can you guess what inspired the theme? šŸ§”šŸ–¤

Student Services Student Services

This week, students at Longfellow Middle School finished the second Mental Health 101 lesson. Next week, students begin a two lesson series around Suicide Prevention. In this lesson, students will define suicide and learn how to recognize its risk factors and warning signs in themselves and others. Students will also identify trusted adults and resources for seeking help. This lesson includes discussions about suicide and self-harm, focusing on awareness, recognizing warning signs, and the importance of seeking support. While the content is designed to be informative and reduce stigma, some discussions may be difficult for those with personal experiences related to these topics. The class will review norms for practicing empathy, respecting privacy, and supporting one another. Students are encouraged to take care of themselves, and if they feel overwhelmed, they can take a break or speak with a staff member.

The new Destination Imagination season is almost here, with exciting new STEAM-based challenges and many opportunities for creativity, problem solving, collaboration, personal growth, and FUN! Students work in small teams on open-ended challenges from November through at least March (longer if they advance to state and international competition), and teams set their own meeting schedules so it’s easy to flex around other activities.

Longfellow has a long and proud DI tradition and has even had teams advance to DI’s Global Finals. But more important, DI is a great way for students to make new friends and build confidence and lifelong skills.

The participation fee of $165. Full and partial scholarships are available. Financial need should not be a barrier to participation! To learn more, or to sign up your student for the 2025–26 season, visit FriendsOfTosaDI.org or email FriendsOfTosaDI@gmail.com. The requested due date for signing up is Friday, Oct. 10, although we will try to accommodate registrations after that date.
