Novel Engineering Challenge!
K-5 Curriculum Review 2021
What is Novel Engineering?
What does literacy and the Engineering Design Process have in common? More than you would think! Engineering Design is the cornerstone of STEM. Integrate this with literacy and you have the perfect combination for engagement. This is the premise of Novel Engineering: Use existing classroom literature as the basis for engineering design challenges. As students read, they identify problems in the story and design realistic solutions.

The Challenge
For curriculum review, two teachers from each grade level, K-5, will work together to design Novel Engineering experiences for shared and interactive books in Bookworms. Each grade level team will:
- Use the shared and interactive books to identify possible Novel Engineering challenges.
- Make a list of materials needed for the challenge. These will need to be materials found easily in a classroom.
- Find as many cross curricular connections as possible.
- Create a lesson document that will be saved in a Canvas course. Over the summer, the curriculum team will work to put these lessons in the ELA canvas courses that are pushed out to teachers.
