Holy Week at Nativity Holy Week at Nativity

Once again, this year we will offer Holy Week worship services both in-person and via zoom. We begin with Palm Sunday/Passion of Our Lord on April 13 at 10:30 am. The congregation will enter into the story of Jesus' Passion beginning with his triumphal entry into Jerusalem and ending as Pilate's guards seal the tomb.

On Maundy Thursday, April 17 our worship will begin at 6:30 p.m. in our sanctuary. We will sing, pray and celebrate Holy Communion. As our time together that evening ends, we will hear the ancient lament of Psalm 22, witness the stripping of the altar, and leave in silence.

Our Good Friday worship on April 18 at 6:30 p.m. will be something different this year: gathering around the cross in our sanctuary, a time of simple song, silence, hearing the story of Jesus’ death once again as the lights dim and we reflect on the sorrows of our world. This service will be zoomed, but will be better experienced in person if you are able.

For early risers on Easter morning, April 20, we will gather once again at Glen Cove Park on Route 1 in Rockport at 6:00 a.m. If the "gate" has not been opened for the season, we can park on the road and walk in. This worship service will be short with an Easter fire, songs, scripture readings, prayers. The sun will already have risen but it should be beautiful, nonetheless. We will not have Communion at this service, and we will not zoom this one. If there is heavy rain, this worship will be cancelled.

Later that morning “Easter Breakfast by Hans” will be held in our Fellowship Hall 8:30 AM—10:00 AM. As of publishing time Hans says, “I’m not sure what we’ll have but there will definitely be bacon!” Pancakes, french toast, waffles, and eggs are all being considered. Whatever is decided upon will be delicious. If you’d like to help or would like to bring something, please be in touch with Hans.

Our Festival Celebration of Easter is April 20 at 10:30 a.m. It will include Holy Communion, praise, proclamation, and of course wonderful music including the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah!

Zoom information for Thursday and Friday will be available early in that week. Easter Sunday Worship (10:30) will use the regular Sunday zoom link. If you are not on our weekly email list and would like the zoom information, please email (office@nativityrockport.org) or call the church office

Life has been feeling a bit like a yo-yo to me lately. As I write, it’s a beautiful spring day, the sun is shining and forecasters are predicting high temperatures near fifty degrees for this afternoon. They are also predicting snow for tomorrow, with some placing us in the five-inch category! And then there’s all that’s going on in our country: tariffs are on/tariffs are postponed; government employees are fired/government employees are reinstated; markets are up/markets are down. One of the ways I relax and unwind is following New England sports teams. The Boston Red Sox (baseball) rallied to win on Opening Day. The Boston Bruins (hockey) have lost their last seven games and all hope of making the playoffs.

Life really is a series of ups and downs. March/April snows melt quickly and there will be a new season for the Bruins in October. As for our country, I am praying for stability, and trying in small ways to be a voice for dignity and fairness and justice. Ups and downs on the string of life: some consequential, some unimportant.

As I ponder the ups and downs as we near Holy Week this Lent, I can’t help but think that life for Jesus must have felt like a yo-yo as he journeyed to the cross. (Had yo-yos been invented then? That wasn’t covered in Church History class.) Jesus was welcomed enthusiastically in some villages and run out of town by others. He celebrated an intimate Passover meal with his best friends in the upper room only to be deserted by them all in the garden as he was arrested. Crowds welcomed him with a “parade” of palms and garments only to call for his crucifixion a few days later. Some called him Messiah and Lord; others called him traitor.

Sometimes in life it seems like the yo-yo goes to the bottom of the string and stays there at the lowest point. I can remember as a kid being so frustrated when I was unable to bring the yo-yo back up into my hand with what seemed like an unattainable motion. Then I learned that the yo-yo had to hit the very bottom, the very end of the string, before it would come up. Without the cross there would be no resurrection. Without Good Friday there would be no Easter. Even at the lowest points of life God is with us. Easter will come.

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Anderson

Earth Day April 22, 2025!

Theme: It’s Our Power, it’s Our Planet.

In 2025, as EARTHDAY.ORG turns 55, join us as we embrace a powerful, renewable future. Facts below are found at www.earthday.org.

Examples of US achievements:

  • In the US in 2023, the US produced more solar power than ever before with California, Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Nevada and Arizona the states leading the solar revolution. It is helping to produce the cheapest electricity in history.

  • In the United States, Texas—long associated with oil production—now leads the nation in wind energy generation.

  • The U.S. also has used its existing drilling capacity to become the world’s leading producer of advanced geothermal energy.

Examples of Global achievements:

  • China is currently leading the world in both wind and solar, with twice as much capacity under construction as the rest of the world combined in 2024.

  • A third of all homes in Australia use solar power.

  • In Denmark, over 50% of the country’s electricity is generated from wind turbines (and has already provided 100% of its power over a 24 hour period) and by 2026, wind energy will power 30% of Spain, 17% of the Netherlands and 23% of the electricity needs of Germany.

  • In Brazil hydro-electric accounted for nearly 68% of its total electricity generation in 2023. Italy is at 23% and growing, Netherlands at 16%.

  • Kenya is a leader in Africa, with geothermal power accounting for nearly half of its electricity generation. Geothermal can be beneficial for the electrical grid, as it puts less strain on it and can help mitigate blackouts. Geothermal also emits 97% less acid rain-causing compounds and 99% less carbon dioxide.

  • The Pastor’s Discretionary Fund: Please remember that an extra $5 or $10 each month may make a huge difference to a family in need! Please indicate any additional donations as "Pastor's Discretionary" when you mail in your monthly offering.
  • Don't forget: One simple way to help care for creation is to download the weekly bulletin onto your smart phone or tablet and then bring that device to worship or use it when you zoom at home saving paper and resources. Need help figuring that out? Call Pastor for Android help or Denise Stadler for Apple help.
  • Your aluminum pop tabs can help keep families with sick children close to each other and the care and resources they need. Look for the paper bag on the Social Ministry bulletin board in the Narthex. Place your tabs in the bag and take your container home and fill it again! The tabs are donated to the Ronald McDonald House.
