Turn Winter Break into a reading adventure! đź“– Turn Winter Break into a reading adventure! đź“–

Keep your child engaged over winter break with District 21’s School Reading Challenges! Students can log every minute they read—picture books, graphic novels, articles, or chapter books—using Beanstack. Grades 3-8 can also meet Benny the Bean, an AI reading buddy who helps set goals, stay motivated, and celebrate progress. Tracking reading minutes builds strong habits, boosts stamina, and shows growth, all while making reading fun. Students can access Beanstack on their Chromebooks and connect both school and local library accounts. Families, take a moment to check their reading minutes and cheer them on as they participate in our Reading Challenges! (English | Spanish | Russian)

Online Safety and Digital Citizenship Reminders Online Safety and Digital Citizenship Reminders

As the winter break approaches, we know that students will likely spend more time at home engaging with technology. This is a perfect time to reinforce online safety and digital citizenship skills. Since students may be interacting with friends and new people online, please take a moment to discuss the importance of not sharing personal information (like home addresses, phone numbers, or passwords) and being thoughtful about what they post.

It's also crucial to monitor your child's screen time and encourage a healthy balance that includes offline activities, reading, and exercise. We suggest establishing a "device drop-off" policy, where all personal technology is charged outside of the student's bedroom overnight to prevent unmonitored usage and ensure adequate sleep. Setting clear family rules for device usage, especially regarding new games or platforms, will ensure the break is safe, fun, and restful.
