NOTES FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Where do we start and where did the first three months of school go? One of the facts that our team is very proud of is that 971 of our Monsoons had Perfect Attendance with ZERO Tardies to class during the first quarter. Our team is sharing a few resources based on the impact on our greater community of behaviors that we are seeing on campus.
Parent Resources (please see below):
- Fentanyl Crisis (Los Angeles County Office of Education - LACOE)
- Be VAPE Free
- Vaping and Marijuana: What You Need to Know
- Teens and Technology
How are these relevant to Mayfair? While we are not aware of any issues currently with our students and fentanyl, we think it is important to provide you with resources about this topic. Vaping continues to be an item that is prevalent in our society. Unfortunately, many of our students are exposed to this on our campus and in society. We continue to take measures to address this on our campus. What are we doing?
- We post staff at the bathrooms at lunch and sweep them regularly
- Students are told that the restrooms are not a place to socialize and "hang out."
- Students in possession of Vaping devices will receive appropriate disciplinary consequences that may include suspension and or recommendation for expulsion.
The links provided in the parent resources section have a large amount of information that will provide you some strategies to address these topics with your children.
TECHNOLOGY
We continue to work with students of all ages with regards to how they use cell phones on campus. We continue to see students utilizing devices far beyond their intended use. I am a parent as well. I want for my children to be able to contact me in emergency situations. However many students continue to engage in behaviors that do not align with our school wide expectations.
- Students continue to take pictures and or videos or others on campus without consent.
- Sometimes these videos/pictures are posted on social media platforms
- Students are using tools like Airdrop to share inappropriate photos/videos with other students.
Our guidance below provides a ton of information and strategies to address these concerns. There are several helpful pages within this website. "Teens and Technology: Examples of Technology Abuse" is a great place to start.
The vast majority of students adhering to our schoolwide expectations, but these are all valuable resources.

Title IX Celebration - Closing
Keynote speaker Sue Enquist closes a great Title IX Celebration on our campus this Wednesday. Student-athletes from Bellflower, John Glenn, La Mirada, Norwalk, Warren, Downey and Mayfair participated followed by an additional event that recognized our amazing staff who all are VERY IMPRESSIVE former student-athletes at the high school and colligate levels.
PSAT Commended Student: Kathalia Wong
CONGRATULATIONS KATHALIA WONG!
High scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT may find themselves named Commended Students by the NMSC in September of their senior year. Generally, the top 3%-4% of PSAT scorers receive commended student status, or about 35,000 students. This is certainly an accomplishment, but it means that these students did not receive high enough qualifying scores to be named a semifinalist this cycle, as usually semifinalists score in the top 1% of PSAT takers.
However, Commended Students do receive letters of commendation from the NMSC, to recognize the significant academic achievement of scoring so well on the PSAT. And while Commended Students are not eligible to compete for the official National Merit Scholarship, as semifinalists are, by being recognized in this way they often do become candidates for special merit scholarship awards offered by statewide agencies and corporate sponsors. You can read more about that below under “Special Scholarships.”

MEET & GREET: Welcome the SOON Family!
WELCOME to Mayfair Robert (Bob) Favarato, English Teacher
Mayfair Middle-High School welcomed Robert Favarato as a new English teacher to its faculty earlier this month. Bob, as he likes to be called, has recently settled down in Southern California after following his wife, Gaby, for the last twenty plus years while she served as a physician in the United States Air Force. Her service to our country led to Bob's journeyman teaching career where he taught in Washington D.C., Northern California, the Mojave Desert and Texas. Bob Favarato is also a USAF veteran and holds a master's degree in English. Besides teaching Bob has worked as a book publishing editor, literary critic and contest judge. He is a self described "word nerd" and excited to make his personal impact at Mayfair Middle-High School.!
Welcome BACK to the Monsoon Family!!!
Hi my name is Jennifer Ornelas and I am the new Behavior Assistant assigned to our new Wellness Center at Mayfair High School and Middle School. I have previously had the opportunity to work with some of you in the past 9 years that I have worked for the district, 8 of them being at Mayfair. I am proud to be a first-generation graduate with a BA in Behavioral Science and a Mayfair graduate as well. I have had the privilege of working in the mental health field helping with emotional regulation skills and coaching people suffering from Borderline Personality Disorders with self-destructive behaviors. I am excited to step into this new and supportive role for students on campus. I will be located in room 308 and available for any student that may need social emotional support by proactively checking in on students and doing positive spot checks as well as acting reactively by responding to students in crisis. If you have students that may benefit from talking to me and receiving SEL support or even have me sit in the classroom, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I am happy to be back!
