Massabesic MiddleSchoolFamily Newsletter

April 16, 2026

Greetings MMS Families,

Can you believe we’re halfway through April? There is a certain energy that fills a middle school hallway when the sun starts staying out longer and the countdown to spring break begins. It’s a season of transition, and while the finish line of the school year is in sight, we still have some of our most important work-and play-ahead of us.

We kicked off the spring season with our spring dance yesterday, and I have to say, our students brought incredible energy! It was wonderful to see everyone taking a break to simply enjoy being together. A huge thank you to the staff who helped make this event a safe and memorable success.

Our fine arts are in full swing, and we have three spectacular events coming up that you won’t want to miss:

  • Our first MMS Art Exhibition: Come see the work of our incredible MMS artists on May 12th from 5-7 in our Library, and then stick around for the Band Concert—details below!

  • MMS Spring Band Concert: Our instrumentalists will perform on May 12th at 7pm. Prepare to be impressed by their growth!

  • MMS Spring Chorus Concert: Join us on May 19 at 7pm to hear the hard work our vocalists have put in this semester.

As we head into the final stretch, we are preparing for our annual state testing. We know "testing" can be a stressful word, but our goal is simply to let our students show off what they’ve learned. Please help your student by ensuring they get plenty of rest and a good breakfast on testing days, listed below.

Finally, as we head into April Vacation today, we hope you all take this time to unplug, recharge, and enjoy some quality time with family and friends. We look forward to seeing everyone back on campus, refreshed and ready to finish the year strong on April 27th.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our school community!

Sincerely,

Kelly Grantham, Principal

Amy Troiano, Assistant Principal

Grade 6 Interdisciplinary Studies

In our Grade 6 Interdisciplinary Studies classes, students have been exploring United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. As part of this unit, we are reading the novel A Long Walk to Water and researching the real-world impact of water scarcity and contamination across various African countries.

To bridge the gap between literature and reality, students participated in a simulation of the daily journey made by Nya, one of the novel's main characters. In the story, Nya walks 3.7 miles round trip every single day to collect water—regardless of the scorching heat or her own physical exhaustion.

To bring this distance to life, our students measured the school parking lot and determined that six laps equals one mile. In the photos below, you can see students walking with water jugs similar in size and weight to the one Nya carries. By stepping into her shoes, these students gained a profound appreciation not only for the daunting distance she travels but also for the immense physical burden she bears to provide for her family.

Celebrating Excellence in Harmony: ACDA State Chorus Festival

We are thrilled to announce that a whopping 39 of our talented vocalists from MMS have been selected to participate in the prestigious ACDA State Chorus Festival! This wonderful event will take place on May 9 at the Orion Performing Arts Center in Topsham.

Selection for this festival is a significant honor and a testament to the hard work, dedication, and artistry these students bring to our music program every day. We couldn't be prouder of their achievement and the way they represent the spirit of MMS.

Please join us in celebrating and congratulating our festival participants, divided into their respective performing ensembles:
