Principals' Message
Dear SCS Families and Caregivers,
Shelburne Community School is sharing a bittersweet update regarding our administrative team. Antonia Trono, who has served as our Director of Special Services, has made the difficult decision to transition from her role at SCS to return to her position as the Director of the Consultation Team for the Champlain Valley School District (CVSD).
While we are saddened to see her depart our daily halls at SCS, we are incredibly fortunate that her expertise, student-centered leadership, and passion for inclusion will remain a vital resource for our entire district community.
CVSD and SCS leadership are working closely together to ensure a smooth leadership transition for the Special Services department. We want to thank Antonia for her incredible dedication to the Shelburne community and look forward to our continued collaboration with her in her district-wide role. Please join us in wishing Antonia the very best as she embarks on this next chapter of her career within our district.
As we do so, the administrative team is pleased to announce that Tania Hayes will join the leadership team as the Building-Based Director of Special Education for the 2026-27 school year. Hayes, a veteran educator with a career spanning 25 years, will begin her new role this July.
“The search committee was deeply impressed by Tania’s extensive technical knowledge and her heart for student-centered leadership,” shared Jen Roth, SCS PreK-4th grade Principal. “Tania brings a rare combination of high-level district experience and a genuine desire to return to building-based work where she can collaborate daily with staff, students, and families. Her commitment to creating equitable and inclusive learning communities makes her the perfect fit for SCS.”
Hayes makes the transition to Shelburne following nine years of service as a District Director of Student Services. Throughout her administrative tenure, she has been a steady hand during periods of significant change, leading special education departments through the complexities of the COVID-19 pandemic and the statewide implementation of Act 173. Her recent work has focused on enhancing tiered intervention systems, specifically in the realms of social, emotional, and behavioral support.
In thinking about the upcoming transition, Hayes shared, “I am so excited to be joining the Shelburne Community School learning community. I bring a passion for working collaboratively and creatively to ensure all students learn at high levels within engaging and inclusive communities. I look forward to partnering with the SCS staff and families in this work! “
“I value collaborative relationships and collective effort,” Hayes said of her leadership philosophy. “I am eager to transition to a building-based role to collaborate more directly with the SCS community. My focus remains on enhancing practices that create welcoming, equitable environments where every student can thrive.”
Hayes holds Vermont professional endorsements in Special Education, Literacy, and Administration. Her diverse background ranges from her early career as an adventure-based educator to her expertise as a Case Manager and Local Education Agency (LEA) Representative. She possesses a deep mastery of IDEA and Section 504 procedures, always centering data-based decision-making around student strengths and family voice.
As with all hires, this appointment will become official pending CVSD School Board approval. Please join us in welcoming Tania Hayes to the SCS Leadership team!
In partnership,
Antonia, Jen and Brett
