Welcome Back!

The L.E.S. Specials Team is excited to welcome back our students for an exciting adventure in Music, Media, Physical Education and Visual Art.

In FCPS, the four special content areas are an important part of each elementary student's growth and development. Each specials area has a rigorous curriculum that teaches content-specific skills and processes, as well as challenging children to problem solve in many different formats.

As we learn and grow together this year, please don't hesitate to contact us directly about our content, curriculum or with child-specific questions. We're looking forward to a great year together!

From the Art Studio - Mr. Hench

What a great start to our year! I am excited to have joined the Lewistown Specials Team to work with our students in the Visual Arts. This is my 28th year in education in a variety of roles - I'm proud to be back in FCPS after 13 years in Washington County and ready to create great things with our kids! My own children attended Sabillasville Elementary and are now at Thurmont M.S. and are involved in music and the arts - Mrs. Hench is also an art teacher in FCPS, so you can guess what we talk about all of the time!

We're starting the year with a variety of artworks that are designed to show me what skills our students bring to the art studio, as well as those they need to continue to grow. We'll also introduce the grade level curriculum indicators and vocabulary in the four main components of art: critical, historical/cultural, production and aesthetics. Students will self-critique their art as well as their studio performance (effort and proper use of art tools and materials).

Our year started with goal setting and a personal portfolio design (see photos below) and now moves into grade-level artworks that students will use in our Square1 fundraiser - stayed tuned for more!

Physical Education - Mrs. Burgess

Welcome back LES!

Students are in for another year of exciting challenges and growth in Physical Education class! We are starting out immersed in cooperative games and challenges so students can discover how #Unityisstrength is witnessed In the PE classroom!

The skills and they learn this first month will be used all year long as they engage with peers while learning new tasks and/or advance with familiar ones. Hopefully families are having fun with our first monthly fitness challenge. Additionally, families can enjoy time at Summers Farm by completing the Eat Healthy Challenge! Papers should have arrived home. GREAT NEWS, this year you can keep the paper to take to the farm. The special FCPS PE stamp is all you need! Take your completed form to the farm for a fun day together!

Music Notes - Mrs. Raynor

Welcome back to music class! The music room has been full of singing voices and instrument sounds as we settle into our classroom routines! This is actually my 22nd year teaching music here in Frederick County, and I’m thrilled to be back at LES!

I’m excited to get to know our LES students and families a little better this year. In case you’d like to know a little bit about me: I am a Frederick County native, from the Myersville area. I received my degree in Music Education from Messiah College, and a degree in Educational Leadership from Hood College. My husband & I have three children; ages 21, 19, and 17. Outside of school, I absolutely love musical theatre, reading, playing with our 3 cats, and Disney.

I’m looking forward to a wonderful school year! Here are a couple dates to keep in mind for our intermediate students:

December 10: 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Night of the Arts

December 17: 5th grade Honors Chorus auditions

Media News - Mrs. Byard

Welcome Back! My name is Dana Byard and I am the Library Media Specialist at Lewistown. I have worked for FCPS for 33 years. I was a classroom teacher for 9 years, and have been a media specialist for 24 years. This is my 5th year as media specialist at Lewistown. I live in Frederick with my husband. I have a daughter (25) who lives in Florida, and a son (21) who attends West Virginia University. In my spare time, I love to read books!

We have had a very busy beginning of the year in the media center. All students have learned how to take good care of their books. Ask your child to explain what they have learned about “being a book buddy.”

Students will be learning both library and technology skills on their visits to the media center. We will be learning about Digital Citizenship all year, but especially during term one. Digital Citizenship lessons teach K-5 students how to be a good citizen when using technology. Some of the topics we will cover include internet safety, safe searching, internet resources vs. database resources, and more!

We will also be learning about the resources that are available to students on the media center home page. We will continue to explore those resources throughout term one and the rest of the school year. Students will become familiar with these online resources in the media center, so they will then be able to use them in the classroom and at home. These include ebooks, databases, and the online catalog. Usernames and Passwords will be coming home soon.

We will be reading some great books this year. We will be participating in the MD Black-Eyed Susan Book Award Program, which is our state book award program, as well as reading other literature. We will be learning about authors and their contributions.

FYI-When a student checks out a book, there is a two week loan time before the book is considered overdue. I would like students to take the time they need to enjoy and finish their books. Students do not need to turn in their books every week, especially if they are not finished with them. Books can also be renewed.

If you have any questions or concerns related to the media center, please feel free to contact me throughout the year at 240-236-3717 or dana.byard@fcps.org.
